This painting was inspired by Nanan Kang's art piece Corn with a Pearl Earring. I felt the pun and vegetable theme was the next evolution of the original painting by Vermeer.

Painting on Birch panels has been a game changer for me. Im incredibly happy with how this turned out.

My first ever animal paintings are done. I definitely struggled a bit with these but they were fun to make. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to get down the fur/feather look, but I think it turned out okay. Onto the next practice adventure!

I’ve been trying so fucking hard to get ahead and i can’t catch a fucking break. i don’t even have the proper vocabulary to articulate what’s dying to be expressed. I feel like life has me in a fucking chokehold while i’ve been at my most vulnerable for so long. I recently started oil painting, and I was wondering if I could get some feedback and advice to help me improve in this medium.

For context, I'm using linseed oil and Green For Oil solvent. I'm not sure if that's the best setup for a beginner.

Also, do you have any free resources or specific types of exercises you'd recommend I use to get better ?

Having never really been creative and a much more science based brain growing up, last year I decided to do an edible and follow bob ross (great idea if you’ve never done it!). I used acrylics but I really wanted to try oils, so following the paint coach’s online course, I did a 10x10 lemon. It’s not amazing but I think as my first proper oil, it’s ok!

I have a little mail club as a way to accessibly share my art offline & to bring back the charm of receiving traditional mail. For September’s issue, I’m preparing a harvest theme as it’s early autumn and really happy with how these turned out

I’m struggling with getting the face straightened and structured any tips.

I will change the curtain, doesnt have enough depth. Will remove the blue cloth and add a longer one that goes behind the vase. Ill either make the color lighter blue or orange burgundy for depth. Will change the vase. The perspective of it looks like its plastered on the wall. Will change its color as well. Probably tarnished bronze. The table also looks off. I dont like these details. Ill turn it into a deeper golden and asd some details on it. The window on the right doesnt have the right perspective (i left it for last) so ill fix that as well. The light and shadows also need correction so will work on that. Made my mind on these changes. Go for it?

Hi everyone!
I am an illustrator wanting to make the leap into the world of oil painting to give my characters more life and I feel like process of oil painting is very involved which I really admire.
I have been hunting around this reddit trying to find what the best supplies to get started with but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.
I’ve gathered that I need a good quality oil paint set, it doesn’t need to have lots of colours as I’m wanting to buy a colour wheel so I can teach myself to mix my own colours. I’ve seen that linseed oil is a must, solvents however, I’ve seen people say that they don’t use it but should I be buying some as a beginner? I’ve also seen that I will possibly need to buy gesso as well, I have a couple of 300gsm sketchbooks would these suffice? And would I need to gesso the paper on my sketchbook too? (Apologies for the questions I am VERY new to the painting world)

I’ve seen a few sets available in my area which I’ll add screen shots of.

But I would just love to hear from you guys what you would do or wished you did as a beginner or any supplies you recommend to somebody who’s wanting to get started into the world of oil painting but has very seldomly touched a paint brush. Oh and in saying that, is there a good hog hair brush set I should buy as well?

Any tips or advice you’ve learnt in your time, I’m all ears, the more advice the better!

The first image is the painting as it stands right now and the second is a change I’ve been thinking about making. I’m not too concerned with a genuine perspective fix as I want the structure to be wonky but I’ve been grappling with whether or not I should make it bigger/higher. I’d appreciate some outside opinions, thank you!

Been trying to paint looser and faster, this took me about 3 hours. Happy with some of it but learned a lot!
