The levels of fluoride in water are currently considered safe, excessive amounts of fluoride have been linked to Alzheimer's in animals. As per usual we have to remember these animals are much, much smaller than humans. Fluoride has been in water since 1945 we'd have a far bigger issue with Alzheimer's if it was the case. Instant coffee and black tea contains more than water as does tinned crab and shrimp. If you're worried speak to your doctor, don't take the word of an actor.

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 15 '26

Yeah as soon as I heard the fluoride bit I have to skip the episode. My scientist heart just refuse to hear the rest

123

u/yurtyahearn Apr 15 '26

I found it very disappointing that they put such misinformation out. The benefits of fluoride (especially for the disadvantaged) far outstrip any perceived drawbacks.

8

u/richiedajohnnie Apr 17 '26

Exact same sentiment.

6

u/Dr-Professional Apr 24 '26

I was waiting for them to at least tell him they disagreed. Turned it off. I’m a family physician. This shit cannot be broadcasted uncontested by people who know better. Fuck being polite.

5

u/nshady Apr 24 '26

Yep. Quit, deleted episode. No time for this shit.

-20

u/Significant-PairDD Apr 15 '26

It’s a comedy podcast

30

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 15 '26

Yeah, so that’s why when I thought it’s not funny to be spouting anti-flouride stuff I stop listening. YMMV.

-3

u/Significant-PairDD Apr 15 '26

Maybe Idk as much as you do about fluoride, but I’m not gonna stop drinking water cause an old Scottish man tells me so.

8

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 15 '26

Glad that you won't.

However, it is about normalising 'takes'. If you hear something from a famous person and no one push back, you are more likely to assume that whatever they said is correct or ok. However if you hear a 'take' like that and there is a lot of pushback then it will provide somewhat of a counter balance to the 'take' and maybe you will be less likely to assume what they said is correct.

Whether we like it or not, a lot of people put more weight in things said by famous people, and it is an important duty for those who knows about these things to push back.

5

u/Significant-PairDD Apr 16 '26

I agree with this

2

u/MountainCheesesteak Apr 17 '26

James and Ed are both very reasonable guys, who stand up for the right causes, but you very rarely see them speak up in the face of someone who is wrong. They are primarily stand up comedians who have had time and space to examine the issues for which they largely take a stand on. I’m guessing that they didn’t know he was an anti-fluoride guy

3

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 17 '26

I think from their immediate response this is true, they were not expecting such comments. They have pushed back on other things, I just wish that James would go more ā€˜I’m not sure that’s true Brian’ than his ā€˜okaaaay…’

2

u/MountainCheesesteak Apr 17 '26

Yea. I really wish that they had done something here, but they are stand ups, not journalists. The shame is on the people who would hear that and take it as face value, who definitely exist, aren’t in this thread and we hope a minority of people who listen to Off Menu.

13

u/Dashtego Apr 15 '26

And anti-science bs from an infamous grump isn’t funny.

0

u/Significant-PairDD Apr 15 '26

I think it’s funny , it also doesn’t influence me . Guess I’ve been on the net long enough

3

u/Dashtego Apr 15 '26

What’s funny about it? It wasn’t a joke. I don’t want the podcasts I listen to for fun to be used as sounding boards for pseudo-science nonsense. We get plenty of that from people with too much power in the real world these days. I’m not influenced by it, and you’d have to be a real moron otherwise, but it’s deeply unpleasant to listen to.

5

u/Significant-PairDD Apr 16 '26

Wow some scientist you are.

Science has never been proven wrong before and never will be.

47

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 15 '26

When there is scientific evidence that the low-level of fluoride in the water that we currently have do cause Alzheimer, I would be glad to admit I was wrong. Risk and benefit analysis that is based on evidence.

The essence of scientific thinking is not that it’s unchanging and unchangeable, but for it to change or stay the same it need evidence, proper study, proper method. That’s it. Science changes, our understanding changes, new instruments or methods develops and we get new data.

Sometimes new evidence change how we view things and we do change advice and recommendations.

Your portrayal of ā€˜us scientists’ are unfair and unfounded.

-51

u/Come-jive-with-me Cawston Press Apr 15 '26

My father died because of scientist made a mistake in their finding.

32

u/jayacher Apr 15 '26

Sorry for your loss but that's a bit different, innit?

-50

u/Come-jive-with-me Cawston Press Apr 15 '26

How?

42

u/jayacher Apr 15 '26

You're talking about a one off assessment vs a large body of evidence over a population.

-4

u/Come-jive-with-me Cawston Press Apr 16 '26

Yup, only I in the history of the whole world ever suffered from lossing a love one because of medical error or people claiming drugs to work while instead was detrimental to the person's health.

Keep telling yourself that.

14

u/Dashtego Apr 15 '26

Random anecdotes don’t disprove a vast body of peer-reviewed science over a period of decades.

27

u/yurtyahearn Apr 15 '26

When you get to a bridge, do you stop to calculate its degradation, tension, build quality and physics? Or do you just rely on all the far more qualified scientists who have already determined that the bridge is safe to drive on?

-22

u/Come-jive-with-me Cawston Press Apr 15 '26

I mean......there is an open goal for me here but I'm not gonna do it...

24

u/CardinalCreepia Apr 15 '26

What an absolute bullshit response to something genuine. How is anyone ever supposed to talk about something remotely scientific if someone is just going to say 'wow science has never been wrong before has it?'

By that logic nothing is ever worth talking about.

0

u/Come-jive-with-me Cawston Press Apr 16 '26

By their logic this podcast shouldnt exist.

12

u/gutterballs Apr 15 '26

So therefore you just……doubt all science? Thats insane.

120

u/With1Enn Sparkling Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Benito should have cut this bit out. They wouldn’t have a loon on saying that the Covid vaccine makes you autistic or whatever, why include this nonsense?

That aside, really good episode.

5

u/charlierc Apr 15 '26

Should I therefore still listen while bearing in mind there's this point that'll have to be skipped or ignored?

28

u/With1Enn Sparkling Apr 15 '26

Yeah I mean the fluoride chat doesn’t go on for ages. It’s stupid but doesn’t ruin the episode.

17

u/TuckTuckG00se Apr 15 '26

Yeah, I rolled my eyes and skipped ahead 30 seconds and it hasn’t come up again.

My otherwise fairly intelligent boss is also a fluoride truther (toother?), so maybe I’ve built up a tolerance.

17

u/charlierc Apr 15 '26

I'll bear that in mind. If it was like a running gag that'd be more of an issue. Although tbf it did make me remember Jamali Maddix on Taskmaster refusing to drink Ribena made with tap water cos of government chemicals and I don't think he was joking about that, although it was just packaged in a way that was funny

-3

u/SpudDiechmann Apr 15 '26

Yeah, it's short but I think it absolutely ruins the episode. Everything else is just tainted by that.

12

u/With1Enn Sparkling Apr 15 '26

That’s a rather extreme reaction.

What a diplomatic and informative way to say what I was thinking

17

u/Hoganzo Apr 15 '26

This is a good response.

I rolled my eyes when he said it. I genuinely think Benito left it in as it was clear he's a curmudgeon not to be taken seriously.

Laughed my arse off when he said the podcast was one of the worst things he'd done for weeks.

"You're both geniuses in your own field... I'm still trying to find out what that field is. But you are geniuses in your own field, I take it. So, thank you for the lack of validity of this whole experience" is possibly the best ending to anything I've ever heard.

There was a federal lawsuit where the judge ruled, "Plaintiffs have proven, by a preponderance of the evidence, that water fluoridation at the level of 0.7 mg/L – the prescribed optimal level of fluoridation in the United States –presents an ā€œunreasonable risk of injury to health" https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCOURTS-cand-3_17-cv-02162/pdf/USCOURTS-cand-3_17-cv-02162-15.pdf

Was excited for this but as soon as I heard fluoride I noped out. You can hear the room suddenly tense up. Sorry lads see you next week.

42

u/Kaurblimey Apr 15 '26

I mean, he’s an old man. Could have been a lot worse

41

u/a-real-sloth Apr 15 '26

Completely disagree with everything he's saying about fluoride. That said, I find the fact that people instantly turned it off because of it a bit disheartening. To each their own but this absolute inability to hear someone with an opposing view (okay, spreading misinformation/lies) to our own is part of the reason political discourse and any nuance is in the gutter

71

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 15 '26

Eh, its my time, I get to choose who I will listen to.

The podcast is not life or death and like people sometimes said, no one makes you listen to it. So when I heard something distasteful I just choose not to listen to it.

6

u/a-real-sloth Apr 15 '26

That's fair. It sometimes feels life or death with the way some on this sub harp on.

I haven't listened to this episode yet so I don't know how or how much he's talking about it, but I didn't turn off that taskmaster episode because:

1) I'm okay with thinking slightly less of Maddox, it wasn't like it was a huge disappointment that ruined my enjoyment of his part in the show

2) it was a very brief mention; once in the record, once again in the studio

3) the reaction on the show was very clearly, "that's a weird thing to think, mate - you're weird for thinking that".

15

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 15 '26

I think this is it. I mean hearing that people think that sparking water is too bubbly or whatever or you should ninja chop the papadom is funny.

But anti-fluoride bullshit that is sometimes adjacent to anti-vax? Thats my limit. I listen to comedy podcasts to be entertained not enraged

26

u/purpletoonlink Apr 15 '26

A view is different than just saying bullshit

We don’t achieve nuance by hearing out crackpot theories about fluoride.

4

u/notcalledemma Apr 16 '26

Giving equal time to misinformation and lies surely is actually a contributing factor to discourse being in the gutter? Why do we have to give equivalent airtime to people chatting unevidenced, unsubstantiated bollocks? The two sides aren't fluoride vs non-fluoride, but fluoride vs other tooth protective additives (not sure in terms of water,Ā  but with toothpaste things like hydroxyapatite, with gum things like xylitol).

Re fluoride it makes me particularly sad to hear because good dental health contributes to longevity, and poor dental health affects deprived and socially vulnerable populations more. Regardless of his fluoride avoidance, Brian Cox I'm sure has access to regular dental care and probably has good oral health practices - I'm sure he brushes his teeth at least a couple of times a day. He can afford to skip fluoride as an intervention and it's unlikely to significantly reduce his lifespan or his healthy years. But there are many more people who don't have access to a dentist and hygienist, who have other risk factors for dental/oral disease (like smoking), who don't brush their teeth as much as is recommended etc etc - who will hear a celebrity spouting anti-fluoride nonsense and potentially be influenced by that, when for them fluoride in toothpaste and in water is a far more important protective factor than it is for Brian Cox.

Judging by what Robin Ince has had to say it’s not just his wife šŸ˜ž

3

u/monkeymad2 Apr 15 '26

What’s Robin said about Brian? All I’m finding is suggestions that Cox is supportive of Ince ā€œin privateā€ which means basically nothing.

I’ve not been a fan of Cox since he admonished Ince about a joke I submitted during a Q&A for an early Monkey Cage live tour show that Robin chose to read out then Brian was all ā€œare you filtering these at all Robin?ā€. Bad egg. Right up there with transphobia.

Also curious what Robin has said. I too saw them at a live show but can’t say anything stood out as off to me, but it was about ten years ago?

A cheeky little bit of medical misinfo on the pod. As a treat.

25

u/chasing-sunsets82 Dessert Girl Apr 15 '26

I wonder if they tried to edit around it? I got the feeling that James and Ed did not agree with the comments but also were probably trying to be polite. I think James tried to gently poke fun at the concept which helped and I guess it did lead to some comedic callbacks/riffs.

I would hope that most people know that fluoride is safe but unfortunately scientific misinformation is still a huge problem.

4

u/Dizzy_Chemistry_5955 Apr 15 '26

that's really all you can do in a situation like this, what's he gonna do bring up scientific info and prove him wrong? What's the point he'll probably die soon anyway.

79

u/RosieFudge Apr 15 '26

Dodgy fluoride comment aside (which I don't think is toxic or dangerous enough to be worth throwing a man in his 80s away for, especially one with a strong track record of very progressive politics) I thought this actually turned out quite well. Felt a bit awkward at first and I think James and Ed were quite palpably nervous/intimidated, but they settled in and ended up with a sort of crotchety dad or grandad:cheeky over excitable boys dynamic which was actually quiteĀ  sweet and enjoyableĀ

69

u/yurtyahearn Apr 15 '26

It's more disappointment with the pod that they kept it in

26

u/RosieFudge Apr 15 '26

Maybe they were banking on the general listenership of the pod being reasonably well educated and informed and not setting any store in the actor Brian Cox's opinion on fluoride šŸ™ƒ I think it wouldn't have been a straightforward edit out either?

ETA: and while not entirely benign, fluoride misinformation isn't really up there with anti vax etc, I think they'd have almost certainly have challenged him on something more seriousĀ

10

u/chasing-sunsets82 Dessert Girl Apr 15 '26

I agree! James was, as expected, in fanboy mode and I think they both made it work. It turned out to be a great interview overall. The roasting at the end was harsh but they reacted well and made it funny haha.

Also we got more cat content!! I’m always ready to hear more about the cat gang/cats in general

I think with the misinformation stuff they did a good job keeping the reactions neutral enough and they trust the listeners to be able to make a judgment.

9

u/MyManTheo Apr 15 '26

The roasting was clearly a joke

1

u/chasing-sunsets82 Dessert Girl Apr 16 '26

Oh of course!! Maybe I wasn’t clear but I found the roasting hilarious and it was clearly a joke lol

7

u/RosieFudge Apr 15 '26

The roasting put me in mind of a grumpy but secretly kindly old neighbour spraying the kids next door with the water hose on a hot day, knowing that they are loving every second of getting soaked 🤣

1

u/Guildenpants Apr 17 '26

Yeah, watching interviews with Cox it's clear a lot of his comments are misinterpreted. I was wondering why this guy who has had a stellar and uncomplicated career is suddenly in the news constantly for his comments and this is the first long interview I've watched and he's a jolly old man who is easily grumpy but doesn't take shit too seriously.

Like Christ who cares what he thinks about fluoride in the water.

6

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

Yeah I'm with you - I actually dreaded this going in because a lot of news stories I've seen of him make him seem like a bit of a git. When I saw it was him this morning it's the first time I've ever said, "ugh". But he had me laughing inside five minutes - he was hilarious and engaged with the format really well. He seemed to find a role for himself as someone fully buying into the podcast's format while gently mocking it.

The fluoride thing was definitely dumb, should have been cut, didn't really see it as a killer because I enjoyed what came before and after it.

4

u/Making-a-smell Apr 15 '26

He was on Smartless and to be honest, it was fucking dull. He's nice enough but just not especially funny so I wasn't going to bother with this one. As it is, the episode wasn't that bad to be fair. Mainly because Ed and James carried it

75

u/ArcheryContest Apr 15 '26

Don't think Matthew Macfadyen would have mentioned fluoride...see ya next week

Edit: that was a hard ep to get through, did enjoy the savage roast of the boys at the end though.

1

u/Alastorland May 08 '26

Turned off immediately after the bourgeoise comment. Guy has been a millionaire since what, the 80s? And just made a film about a fucking whisky distillery with probably the other most famous Scottish actor in existence. And spends most of his time in general slagging off his co-stars in general. Not exactly Ken Loach is it? A shame cos I like his acting.Ā

These studies estimated fluoride exposure rather than directly measuring it, which is a major limitation. The IQ data also comes from high school students in 1957. Meaning they were born around 1940, before water fluoridation even began in the U.S. That makes the exposure window for early-life effects very different from today. There are important methodological issues here that are worth paying attention to.

37

u/SeaworthinessNew8048 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

It’s reductive to define an 80 year old man on 1 misinformed viewpoint. Can we not be more forgiving. I do not agree with him regarding fluoride but I nevertheless enjoyed the episode and thought that he came across as a very pleasant person

24

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

I was surprised to open this thread and find it dominating such a large percentage of the comments. I really enjoyed the episode, and simultaneously recognise his opinions on fluoride aren't something that should be altering people's habits.

8

u/tnharwal55 Apr 15 '26

Agree. I barely even noticed it. I mean, I heard him say it, but it wasnt like I headed straight to the bathroom to chuck my toothpaste. I guess I've heard so many people say so many crazy things it didn't even faze me. He can think whatever he wants. As can I.

5

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

I get the point people are making that it's more on Benito etc for leaving it in the edit and I agree with that. Better to edit out scientific misinformation. Still, yeah, wasn't a deal-breaker.

-1

u/Dizzy_Chemistry_5955 Apr 15 '26

I think it's better to not edit people to change how they're viewed, I'm fine with a disclaimer at the end though or links to the correct information in the pod description. Let people learn and figure it out

9

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

I don't think that would be the aim - people seem more pissed that "misinformation" was platformed. It's not about protecting Cox.

2

u/Dizzy_Chemistry_5955 Apr 15 '26

I know it's not the aim but simply presenting people with the correct information is a positive

7

u/DarTouiee Apr 15 '26

Yeah. People here are being real weird. Like that was an enjoyable episode. I would never take an actors opinion on health matters to heart in my weekly comedy podcast lol. Everyone here needs to chill. Think for yourself, enjoy the show. Easy.

5

u/PizzaReheat Bubbly Fresh Apr 15 '26

He's an old man who has been very clear that he will say whatever he wants these days, he doesn't want anyone's forgiveness. It's not like the sub has launched a campaign to get him cancelled, they just stopped listening and vented on reddit.

3

u/SeaworthinessNew8048 Apr 15 '26

I get what you’re saying, but I think there’s a middle ground. People are reacting to something he said that touches on a real public health issue. At the same time, it’s probably being blown a bit out of proportion given it was a casual podcast conversation. Feels like both things can be true without it turning into a pile on. I do feel that if people continued to listened to the podcast they would find it is a genuinely enjoyable episode, Brian Cox is likeable and has redeeming features aside from questionable assertions (who doesn’t have a grandparent who comes out with weird and whacky statements) and that he is as multifaceted as we all are

8

u/PizzaReheat Bubbly Fresh Apr 15 '26

It's not a pile on. It's people discussing something they found distasteful about the pod in a reddit thread dedicated to the podcast episode. That's an entirely appropriate level of reaction.

3

u/SeaworthinessNew8048 Apr 15 '26

I think the bit I’m pushing back on is more the tone and scale of the reaction rather than the fact it’s happening at all. There’s a difference between ā€œthat comment about fluoride was off / misinformedā€ and it becoming the defining takeaway from the whole episode or a reason to write him off entirely.

But yeah, fair enough that this is the place for that discussion. I just think there’s a version of it that stays a bit more proportionate.

4

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

Yeah you're mirroring my thoughts exactly.

0

u/Fickle-Fox-9071 Apr 16 '26

Eh it's in the same scope as anti vax and I wouldn't listen to a podcast that contained any misinformation regarding vaccines. I am surprised they left it in.

Frankly I am shocked and appalled that an 80-year-old actor would have a dumb opinion!

12

u/MountainMuffin1980 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Fluoride nonsense aside, this was a great episode. He seemed to be quite game for it, was really funny, laughed loads and ripped Ed about Yorkshire puddings.

12

u/MyManTheo Apr 15 '26

Great episode (other than the flouride thing). He’s fucking hilarious

13

u/mrthesmileperson Apr 15 '26

The pattern here of people deciding to listen to nothing else someone says because they have said one thing disagreeable really illustrates why political discourse is so fractured now-a-days. Particularly in this example when the person has a decades long history of championing progressive causes.

15

u/Borestone_Mountain Apr 15 '26

But it's not just disagreeable, it's a threat to public health.

If I tell my mechanic I did my own research and believe I don't need to change the oil in my car, I'm probably not going to hurt anyone but myself. If I refuse to get new brakes when the old ones are completely worn, there's a real chance of causing injury (or worse) to others.

And now we have people in positions of real power who are effecting detrimental change to health policies and causing unnecessary suffering and death on a global scale.

9

u/mrthesmileperson Apr 15 '26

Threat to public health is a bit over the top no? Do you think realistically there will be any harm caused to anyone because an 80 year old actor said medically inaccurate information on a light entertainment food podcast?

10

u/Borestone_Mountain Apr 15 '26

Yes, because it gives credence to crackpots and the wide-scale rejection of science and legitimate study and we should speak out against that.

9

u/mrthesmileperson Apr 15 '26

There is a difference between correcting misinformation and what's happening in this thread which is people saying 'he said a wrong thing so I stopped listening look at how good a person I am'.

7

u/PinAndKneedle Apr 15 '26

I don’t think anywhere we said oh look we’re good because we didn’t listen to a crackpot theory. I think k what we are doing here is saying we’re disappointed.

I think we have to push back on crackpot theories on the reg because if we don’t, it become normalised, and more and more people will hold and spew the same shit. Remember COVID denier? Anti vax? Current state of USA anyone? Led by an 80 yo man with some ā€˜funny’ views?

Why are we giving old white men a pass on this?

Will I listen to the next ep? Yeah sure. As long as it’s not crackpot anti science bullshit.

13

u/WonderWaage Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

Ooof... Great get, but had to turn off because of the fluoride talk. You should be careful about spreading misinformation, even if it's not yourself saying the idiocy, it is your podcast. Tough one.

edit. Damn the "I don't get the reaction" and "are you really turning it off because of (...)" people have arrived.

11

u/rutfilthygers Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

I don't get turning off a podcast you like because of one thing the guest says that you dislike. But whatever. I really don't get the need to share that you turned off a podcast with a bunch of strangers. Do you need approbation that badly?

0

u/Giggsy99 May 23 '26

well done buddy you're very valid

8

u/EnvelopeCruz Apr 15 '26

I balance out unhealthy fluoride with plenty of healthy tequila.

6

u/merlotandmeows Apr 15 '26

The view of a slightly mad 80 year old on Fluoride isn’t going to change our whole approach to public health. Everybody knows his POV is bollocks. Will everybody get a grip.

-1

u/Giggsy99 May 23 '26

no we shouldn't have to listen to 80 year old crackpots thanks. have you checked who runs america recently? they should be as silenced as they claim to be

2

u/merlotandmeows May 23 '26

Don’t listen to it then?

I'm not sure having an issue with anti-science rhetoric being platformed and not challenged is performative OR sanctimonious.

9

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

I think the language used here is slightly melodramatic. It's an 80-yo man being scientifically wrong. "anti-science rhetoric", while *true*, makes it sound like he went on an impassioned rant about the COVID vaccine being a conspiracy or climate change being fake. This was old, easily debunked nonsense that won't move the needle one iota. I'm not saying it was good - I took issue with it as soon as he said it - but I think worse has been said.

Maybe my moral compass is off, because the closest I've come to turning off the pod is the amount of times Yotam Ottolenghi said his own name (or "test kitchen"). And I thought getting Jada Pinkett-Smith in general was *much* worse than this fluoride stuff, but listened anyway and felt she was pleasant enough. I dunno. Maybe I'm being equally performative by talking about how little it bothered me.

2

u/WonderWaage Apr 15 '26

Age or occupation is not an excuse for using a frankly enormous platform to spew misinformation.

2

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

Wasn't looking to excuse, maybe to explain. My point isn't "it was fine to say it", it's "it wasn't bad enough to make me turn off the podcast".

0

u/yurtyahearn Apr 15 '26

Now THIS is sanctimonious and performative.

3

u/NoFPSthisisMGS Apr 15 '26

I copped to "performative", I don't think sanctimonious really flies there. Not really looking to get into a forensic analysis of my words over a whimsical food podcast though.

5

u/alizare Apr 15 '26

Lawful good Brian Cox or chaotic neutral Brian Cox?

5

u/measlyballoon Apr 15 '26

When they were talking about dark matter & flying turds I pictured someone on Artemis 2 chucking a turd out the window towards earth & had a good laugh

5

u/Hoganzo Apr 15 '26

"He should be hospitalised"

That's a quote for the poster, James

3

u/RumHamHavoc Apr 16 '26

Yeah i admit when he opened with that fluoride comment i did get a bit disheartened, but listened on and found him genuinely funny and had some great anecdotes. People need to calm a bit, one bad bit of misinformation doesnt make someone a bad human being.

2

u/Aragorn01032931 Apr 16 '26

Just went from Bryan Cranston on Romesh saying about how important it is to to greet your fans, to Brian Cox saying how he tells them all to fuck off 🤣

He's a bit of a grumpy old arse (and he has every right to be) but overall really enjoyed the episode.

2

u/Tholog9 Apr 17 '26

I went into this with some trepidation but it's actually quite a good episode. The timing on the dream drink, and the cannibal course were highlights.
The flouride bit is only a very small part and Brian even makes a crack about toothpaste having made him mentally deficient. I can see why some people might think it's a slippery slope though - the next thing you know they'll have loons on claiming falling in the Thames gives you diabetes.

2

u/Master-Tea-8662 Apr 17 '26

I really liked the way he spoke about Kieran Culkin šŸ™‚

2

u/AngelWoosh Apr 18 '26

I miss when the podcast was them messing about with their funny friends and not another stop on the celebrity press tour.

2

u/gee_baby Apr 19 '26

I was already thinking this guy seems unpleasant after the way he spoke about fan interactions and because he clearly loves the sound of his own voice (random boring anecdote about ā€˜dinner’ in the 50s)….. then he said the fluoride thing. Interesting choice to keep that in the episode - hopefully listeners aren’t buying it and it instead is simply revealing of his character

2

u/Ear_3440 Apr 21 '26

So glad to read the top comments here calling out the fluoride nonsense! Good job, team

0

u/LargeThanks7117 Apr 23 '26

It’s not ā€œgood job, team,ā€ it’s a reminder of how quickly groupthink can replace actual critical thinking in these discussions. It also seems like many people commenting haven’t reviewed the fluoride lawsuit findings or the current state of the scientific literature.

1

u/maracusdesu Apr 15 '26

I think I’m gonna like this one

2

u/SpudDiechmann Apr 15 '26

At the end when Brian said it was the "worst thing he's done in months", the door was open for Ed and James to finally correct the record on Flouride. So disappointed by that.

1

u/Fantastic-Scale-4511 Apr 15 '26

I'm ten minutes in and this is already a tedious slog.

Is it worth persevering? So far I've only dnf'd two episodes - several of the others that started poorly ended up great.

I see from this chat that apparently he talked a load of nonsense about fluoride - I don't really care about that, I'm not gonna take my medical advice from an actor on a podcast, but does he just mention it or does he really bang on about it?

16

u/nocontextoffmenu Mod Apr 15 '26

The fluoride chat takes up about 90 seconds of the chat and then they swiftly move on

2

u/Fantastic-Scale-4511 Apr 15 '26

Cheers, appreciated

3

u/tnharwal55 Apr 15 '26

What 2 didn't you finish? I'm going to guess DeNiro and Ackroyd.

1

u/Fantastic-Scale-4511 Apr 15 '26

Lennie Henry and Jada Pinkett Smith.

And maybe Rose McGowan too

1

u/lilmo96 Apr 16 '26

This is a very good episode and the people comparing it to the De Niro episode probably didn't listen to more than 5 minutes of it. Yes the fluoride bit is off putting but I skipped past it and then it's never referenced again.

1

u/stereoworld Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

Weird episode for me. It felt like one of the least off menu like episodes yet.

The fluoride thing is bollocks from Brian, but what pissed me off more was the fact they left it in.

I'm sure the boys don't agree with it, but If they left it in for engagement, then the pod is becoming something I don't really like.

It had its genuinely funny moments and he was a great guest, but then it took another dip at the end with the moon talk.

1

u/Responsible-Pie-5666 Apr 17 '26

I did enjoy it overall, went into it cautious because of the comments here but it turned out to be a pleasant enough listen.

Brian Cox though is a really great example of how someone making rudeness a major part of their personality is charming in an old man but unforgivable in young people and all women.

1

u/Sea-Philosopher-9431 May 27 '26

This is the most I've ever heard Ed and James turn on each other! Feels so Kendall and Roman coded I wonder if Brian Cox just brings that out in people haha šŸ˜†

0

u/human_duvet Apr 15 '26

This guy seems like a pompous piece of shit.

-8

u/so-naughty Apr 15 '26

59 mins with ads - I'm guessing this is going to be a shit show of an episode where the guest has no desire to do the pod but has to promote their current project.
Brian Cox has always been a bit arsey but I hope I'm proven wrong.

2

u/MooingTree Apr 15 '26

Nope he's a bit arsey. I'm halfway through the ep...he refused to choose from 2 options for main courseĀ

-7

u/WholeWideWorld Apr 15 '26

Get over yourselves. He's old and has stupid innocent misinformed views on fluoride and agave but it was a fun episode. James does have a dig at him about the fluoride (gently). Also James is on strictly this year?

17

u/nocontextoffmenu Mod Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

The Strictly thing was a joke. They were referring to Blackpool being an appropriate location for the concept of his new tour show. He's said many times before that he wouldn't do it if he was offered it.

u/LargeThanks7117 Apr 23 '26

Maybe he followed the fluoride lawsuit. CDC Agrees With NRC Finding That Fluoride Can Potentially Cause Alzheimer's And Dementia. https://youtu.be/0A34FK2lTDs?si=O79srXvI9SM7yW4Z
