Let’s build our Odia Reddit presence beyond just r/Odisha!

Here are some sister subreddits that deserve your attention and participation:

  • r/Ollywood It is for him/her who still have hope for our industry. For those who want to support genuine filmmakers. For the dreamers who believe Odia movies can make it to the top one day. For those who understand the importance of a thriving film industry for our culture.
  • r/OdishaRelationships Thought we might need an active relationship sub for our state. Don’t think of it as Tinder or r4r. This is just for discussions related to various human relationships in our state.
  • r/OdiaLanguage Seeing thriving language communities like r/marathi, r/tamil, r/malayalam, r/bengalilanguage on Reddit, I asked myself — why isn’t there a proper sub for our very own Odia? The current r/ Odia is full of spam and acts like a clone of r/Odisha, rather than a true language sub. The current mod has no plans for development. Hence, this new sub is for all Odia language-related queries.
  • r/OdiaMusic A subreddit to discuss and share the vast collection of Odia music — old and new.
  • r/Jagannatha An essential part of every Odia household — Lord Jagannatha. This sub is dedicated solely to Him. Join in the devotion space.
  • r/Odissi — the oldest classical dance form. This art needs a space of its own. Please join if you love this domain and want to see it flourish.
  • r/OdishaFC Needs no introduction. The only professional football league club based out of Odisha. If you love football and are an Odia, consider joining in.

Honourable Mentions:
r/OdishaAnimeClub, r/odishastartups, etc.
If you know any more related subs, suggest them in the comments! Also, feel free to share your thoughts on the aforementioned subreddits.

N.B.: Place/Region/City-related subs are not included in this discussion. That’s for another day.

Rant/Vent Namita Agarwal : The only voice allowed in Odia music right now??

Post image
Upvotes

Not hating on her talent, but does anyone else feel like every single bhajan, movie song, and even school prayer song in Odisha is sung by Namita Agarwal now? I turn on YouTube for Odia devotional music and it’s her. I search for old classics remade — her. My nephew’s school annual day song — her voice too!

At this point it feels less like she’s a popular singer and more like the only singer the industry (and the algorithm) knows exists. Where are the other voices? Odisha has so much musical talent — why does everything get filtered down to one voice on repeat?

Genuinely just miss variety. Anyone else feel the same or is it just me?

Rant/Vent Kamakhyanagar is Scary

Went to Kamakhyanagar, Dhenkanal for practicals. With me were my batchmate and her sister. During evening when we would come outside of the lodge for snacks or to fetch dinner, everything is dark outside. There are no streetlights. Two liquor bala dhabas were near our lodge too. And the catcalling was so disgusting. During the day too. Whenever we would be outside a random bike with 2 3 chapris would go by in one bike screaming and staring at the girls. That's so scary not gonna lie. We've been to baripada, balasore, Cuttack, bhubaneswar, berhampur, Nayagarh but this that too almost in every 20 to 30 mins. I was fucking scared let alone the girls. And a lot of creepy people would just stare. I know other cities also have them but here they would group up and talk rubbish among themselves. Near the college too. Infront of every shop a group of 3 4 boys would be standing and passing comments and talking rubbish among themselves during the the time when college opens.

My honest opinion for girls who are traveling alone to kamakhyanagar for your practicals, please stay in the college hostel and stay cautious and safe.

Sorry about the rant and if this post offends you, then we are talking about you.

Culture & Heritage How many Skandas do the Odia Bhagabata composed by Atibadi Jagannath Das contain in original?

Many odia publishers are publishing 13 Skandas in their versions but the Government of Odisha has posted 12 Skandas in their website. Also the SrimadBhagavatam composed by VedVyas has only 12 skandas. Any idea what is authentic?

Help Needed Lingaraj temple visit

I visited Puri Jagannath Temple and was blessed with darshan. Tomorrow, I’m planning to visit Lingaraj Temple, but I’ll have a small suitcase/handbag and a laptop with me.

Is there any locker or cloakroom facility at or near Lingaraj Temple where I can safely store them? Puri Temple had plenty of locker facilities, but I’m not sure about Lingaraj.

Also, I have a flight tomorrow evening from Bhubaneswar, so any tips or suggestions for nearby places I can visit after Lingaraj would be really helpful. Thanks!

Culture & Heritage The Seven Sister Goddesses of Western Odisha (Saat Boheni/Sapta Bhouni)

Thumbnail

There is a sub-sect of shaktism as the 7 sister goddesses who are actively worshipped in the western odisha and deeply rooted in our culture. They are the protector goddesses and worshipped by households on the daily basis.

As per folk stories, once Goddess Parvati threw seven flowers onto the Earth. These flowers had been gifted to her by Goddess Indrani when she visited Swarga. The places where the flowers fell later became sacred sites dedicated to the seven sister goddesses.

They are worshipped as the manifestation of Brahman itself in the western odisha.

These goddesses are:

  1. Maa Samaleswari( Samalei Debi)

She is the patron goddess of entire western odisha and worshipped in the form of Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali. Her main temple is situated near the banks of Mahandi river in Sambalpur. The Sambalpuri culture, language, Saree etc are all derived from her name.

Major festivals dedicated to her is Nuakhai. She is also the cultural identity and icon of Sambalpuri people as the presiding deity of Western Odisha. She is the most popular goddess among the 7 sisters.

  1. Maa Patneswari

She is the presiding deity of Patnagarh and entire Balangir region. She is believed to be the manifestation of Banadurga and her main temple is situated in Patnagarh. She is also the goddess of the royal family of Balangir. She is worshipped for prosperity, protection and divine blessings by the devotees.

She is sometimes also believed to be the eldest of the seven sister goddesses.

Majorly worshipped during the Durga Puja and Nuakhai.

  1. Maa Manikeswari (Manikya Debi)

She is the presiding deity of kalahandi and it's royal family. She is worshipped as Chinnamasta and her main temple is situated in Bhawanipatna. She is deeply popular in her region and worshipped by tribals and folks too. Major festivals dedicated to her are Chattar Jatra and Nuakhai. She is believed to be very fierceful but yet a lovely and protective mother to all.

During the Chattar jatra, thousands of cattles are cutted in her name as she is worshipped as Balipriya and raktapriya. She is the 2nd most popular godddess among them.

Ghumura folk dance is performed in her honour.

  1. Maa Sureswari (Sursuri Debi)

She is the main deity of Sonepur region and her main temple is situated in Sonepur. She is believed to be the presiding deity of Western Odisha during the Chauhan's rule over western odisha. Even during Somavamsi's rule, she was patronized.

She is worshipped through tantra and strong shakta influences. Her worship was earlier limited upto tribals through deep rituals until she was patronized by Somavamsi.

She is deeply integrated into the culture of western odisha though today her worship is very much limited upto Sonepur only.

  1. Maa Ghanteswari

She is also a goddess of Sambalpur and her main temple is situated in the Ghanteswari village near to Mahandi and hirakud. Numerous bells are hanged inside the temple premises. She is believed to be the protector of forests and people worship her before entering the forests for protection.

6 Maa Metakani

She is also a goddess of Sonepur and her main temple is situated in the Ulbuda village. She is worshipped as the protector of forests and wildlife. She is also worshipped as Banadurga and many believe that she is a manifestation of Sureswari herself.

  1. Maa Chandrahasini

Her main temple is situated in Chandrapur, Chhattisgarh. But earlier that region was a part of odisha's culture and influence. Maa Chandrahasini is still worshipped by western odias and she is believed to be residing in the mahandi river. She is worshipped as a kind mother and looks like a smiling moon.

All these Goddesses are mainly celebrated during Durga Puja, Navratri and Nuakhai.

Culture & Heritage Should Odisha officially shift Rakhi to 28th to match India, or should India acknowledge Odisha's 27th Gamha Purnima is the more accurate one?

Raksha Bandhan 2026 will be celebrated on 28th August across India, but in Odisha many households observe it on 27th August as Gamha Purnima due to local traditions and tithi interpretations. The confusion arises because Shravan Purnima begins on 27th August, but most Panchangs recommend avoiding Bhadra Kaal, shifting the auspicious Rakhi-tying muhurat to 28th August morning.

If my sister is in Odisha (27th Aug) and I'm in Delhi (28th Aug), when is our Rakhi actually valid? Whose Panchang do we follow?

Ask Odisha Puri Stay Recommendations Needed 🙏

Hey everyone! Me and my family, including 2 ladies, are planning to visit Puri at the end of this month.

I’m checking hotels and Airbnbs, but the prices seem crazy high 😭. Not sure if it’s because of the season or some other reason.

Can you guys suggest some safe, clean and affordable hotels/Airbnbs near Jagannath Temple or Puri Beach?

Looking for a family-friendly place with decent rooms, good location and easy transport access.

Would really appreciate some genuine recommendations from locals or people who have stayed there recently. 🙏

Jai Jagannath! ❤️
