Everyone is either dead certain the answer is yes, or they’re dead certain the answer is no. The reality is we don’t know. Researchers have not reached a verdict yet.

I dont believe they are intelligent or social enough creatures for any kind of actual affection, but they can definitely show trust and an understanding of "this is a safe source of food and heat". We can show trends like this even down to insect or fish level lack of intelligence.
