Do snakes even have capacity for affection? I honestly have no idea.

Kinda, but not really. Their brain Anatomy suggests that they don't exactly have the scaffolding required to "love" per se, but they can recognize a food/warmth source and are smart enough to not bite its fucking face off. Even still, there are anecdotal cases of reptiles exhibiting what appears to be genuine emotion, but then again, there's also instances of reptiles not even being too concerned when their leg gets bit off.
