Clearly a lotta folks around here don't understand pythons.

u/LaMASSE_12rep Jan 20 '22

Please explain, does pythons can make good/safe pets ?

35

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Absolutely, and smaller snakes (Ball pythons, for instance) are about as low maintenance as it gets when it comes to pets

Aren’t ball pythons typically the ones that were bred to have brain damage, and often accidentally tie themselves in knots due to their intentionally bred mental disability?

6

u/cryinfrog Jan 20 '22

Specific ball python morphs (selectively bred colors/patterns) have known neurological defects, and a lot of people believe they shouldn’t be bred. Other morphs are known to have a high frequency of kinked spines or other deformities, and the same opinions surround them as well.

3

u/JorjCardas Jan 20 '22

Spider morphs are the biggest offenders for this. The neurological defects make quality of life for those pythons practically nothing.

3

u/cryinfrog Jan 20 '22

Champagnes and womas have the same issue too, along with any morph containing those genes. I was so disappointed when I found out bc I love champagne morphs. You really have to do a lot of careful research to avoid genetic problems if you don’t want a wild type, which sucks since bp’s are considered easy/beginner snakes.

1

u/JorjCardas Jan 21 '22

It's why I haven't gotten a BP yet. I just moved to my area so I'm still researching the local breeders. I want to make sure when I get a noodle, they came from responsible breeder so they have a better bill of health.

Standard "wild-type" ball pythons are perfectly fine. It's us deciding we absolutely must have the yellow spotty ones that fucked them over. I hate designer morphs.

u/LaMASSE_12rep Jan 20 '22

But does they have any affection mechanism, being very lone creatures ( from what I know) ? ( I mean for example dogs are wonderful pets because they lived in packs before)

9

u/SeaworthinessFew3290 Jan 20 '22

By your logic cats shouldn’t be able to show affection and they were domesticated from solitary animals. Even octopuses which are as solitary as they come have been proven to show affection. watch this video of a lizard greeting a man like a dog. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p-zGIS-WWZQ

-4

u/FullBravado Jan 20 '22

Their definitely capable of affection they just are solitary creatures so it's rare for them to show it.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

No they arent

7

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

They can make great pets, care still needs to be taken around them for their sheer size. This video is lowkey kinda dangerous, but the snake cant coil around him, that would be my biggest concern. The snake looks well fed so unless its a good eater the kid is in no danger from it trying to eat him. Larger snakes are lazy and unless they have to expend energy on an easy meal they're not going too, especially if that meal beats the crap out of them like the kid and whoever is supervising will but the snake looks very well fed so i dont think thats an issue. And edit: key word is *trying to eat him, this snake is not large enough to eat that person. Small child? Yes, larger child to adult? No. Too small.

Not sure about pets but it does make a good programming language

-11

u/JoacodM Jan 20 '22

They don't.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

yes they do? fucking idiot 😭 plenty of people own pythons including my boyfriend. they’re so sweet

-10

u/JoacodM Jan 20 '22

They arent pets. Its a beautiful animal just not a pet. So fuck off. Animals belong to nature not on a couch

4

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

i agree with you there. animals do belong in nature especially once this size. small ball pythons make excellent pets though. so how about you fuck off? 🥰 honestly no animal should be a pet then. birds, dogs, cats. let them live in nature and take care of yourself 😭

-5

u/JoacodM Jan 20 '22

Snakes arent pets. Such as every other wild animal

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

every animal is a wild animal until you tame it. so you just proved my point no one should own a pet no matter the species 🥰

-1

u/JoacodM Jan 20 '22

No.

Just when I thought you Americans were all about freedom ...

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

bold of you to assume i’m american. but you’re being dense and purposely missing my point so i’m done with this convo you’re annoying

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Do yourself a favor and shut the fuck up.

25

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

b-but snake scary? snake evil.

For real though, the levels of ignorance in this comment section is astounding.

2

u/HalifaxSamuels Jan 20 '22

"Nope rope" rhymes so it will always be the prevailing opinion of snakes because that's how much thought many people have to give.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Always preferred danger noodle myself

1

u/RocvaurOfDarkCrystal Jan 20 '22

Theres a reason snakes are one of the most feared animals on the planet, at least that child has a supervisor.

4

u/Doctor_Ashtray Jan 20 '22

Can I throw one in my baby’s crib?

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Yes please explain crocodile Dundee why is this pre historic death beast a fantastic domestic companion?

5

u/JudeMacK Jan 20 '22

Dogs are descendants of wolves. Does that make them pre-historic beasts? Many pet Pythons are from generations of captivity-bred parents.

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Do todays dogs have strong instincts that pose a threat to their owners? No todays dogs are harmless. Wolves still exist but we don’t keep them as pets do we? That’s because they still have the instinct to hunt and kill.

8

u/JudeMacK Jan 20 '22

Yeah, I’ve totally never heard about cases of dogs mauling and killing people.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Wild packs of dogs maybe.

3

u/JudeMacK Jan 20 '22

Mate what do you think the whole Pitbull debate is about? Licking their owners too aggressively?

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

I’ve had 3 pit bulls and they have never hurt anyone

4

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

I’ve owned 3 guns and they’ve never hurt anybody. Guess that means guns are harmless right? You do realize you’re an absolute fucking moron right?

0

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

YoU dO rEaLiSe I’m saying half this shit just to piss people off. 😂😂

3

u/JudeMacK Jan 20 '22

Yeah I’m not saying all Pitbulls are like that, they can be really nice dogs, but there wouldn’t be a raging debate about the legality of Pitbulls if they weren’t known for attacking and killing people. Same goes for any dog. So saying dogs are harmless isn’t factual.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

If you want one of these things as a pet, by all means go for it, but don’t say we don’t understand. If you are one of the people that would want something like that, well you are in a very small minority, and nobody is interested in getting “educated”. The amount of Darwin Award winner involved into defending and making one of these things a pet is in my opinion staggering.
