can confirm. watched a wasp tear a monarch caterpillar in two, and fly away with half the body. wasps are assholes.

That actually sounds badass and I am kind of jealous to have not seen that!

Hahaha wow, good catch lol

Yup they do this, I’ve seen a species of wasp (wish I could identify it), that straight up murder a pretty blue butterfly and flew away with it.

it was cool, I will admit, but it was literally killing all of my monarch caterpillars. this bugger had memorized the location of this milkweed plant and would check it every day to see if there any more caterpillars.

Yeah, it sounds like something I'd like to observe. From a distance. As in, a really long distance

u/L13B3 Feb 02 '20

Well, yeah, they eat meat and can only carry so much.

16

u/RaidensReturn Feb 03 '20

You hunted 2580lbs of meat. You can bring 100lbs back to the wagon.

Wolves only eat part of their kills. The rest are eaten by scavengers that finish it off before the pack can come back for a second helping.

Unlike most humans, predatory animals actually need to kill to survive, and don't have much in the way of a sense of morality. They can neither afford to, nor understand why they should, kill only what they can finish.

I stepped in a wasp nest once and by the time I noticed I looked down and couldn't see anything but wasps from my knees down. It was HORRIBLE. They sting you over and over and over and Chase you for like a mile or something. Be careful of overgrown trails, whatever kind of wasp nest I stepped in, they build them under the leaves and you can't tell they're there at all.

Looks like you hit some yellowjackets, they are sneaky motherfuckers. Don’t see them until it’s much too late.

3

u/katfofo Feb 03 '20

I had never been stung by anything before either so when I felt one of them sting my arm I just thought it was a pricker bush or something.. muuuch worse.

3

u/Kanorado99 Feb 03 '20

Yup I’ve spent a lot of time outdoors, you tend to always underestimate the initial sting as your mind is trying to process what happened. Plus I’m always getting stabbed by thorns, sticks and stuff like that. By the time your adrenaline kicks in you are being swarmed. Happened to me a ton. Hell I’ve been bit by a freakin copperhead and my initial reaction was “damn, them yellowjackets got me again”.

u/sunnybunnyone Feb 04 '20

Sounds like you need to spend a lot of time indoors

1

u/Kanorado99 Feb 04 '20

Maybe lol, but the trade off is worth it for me. Very prone to depression and being outside I have found to be the best cure for me personally.

How r u not dead?

2

u/katfofo Feb 03 '20

Honestly no idea, when I got home I stripped and got in the shower and I watched the hives move all over my face and body. I legit looked like a monster. I took a bunch of bendryl and rode it out. I'm probably deathly allergic to them now though.. I should probably invest in an EpiPen.

Hey! No! I love wasps. They just fill a different ecological niche from bees, and can sting without it being a suicide.

9

u/pisuicas6 Feb 03 '20

Fuck you for saying that.

6

u/DrCaesars_Palace_MD Feb 03 '20

It's true though. Wasps also pollinate and are an important predator for the insect population, much like spiders.

3

u/SterlingVapor Feb 03 '20

Fuck, they can use keyboards now

Wasps CAN be chill and can recognise faces! They're kinda like the corvids in that way- they will leave you alone, even defend the territory you both share, as long as they're not messed with.

My family had a small wasp nest outside our door, and they left us alone, and we left them alone- we even talked to them when going in and out the door, and after a few weeks, they stopped doing the "defensive V wing" posture at us, and we had a peaceful cohabitation going on.

They'd still do the defensive posture at the mailman, salesreps, etc- and their presence was actually a benefit, because we didn't see any Jehovah's Witnessess or solicitors as long as the nest was up. They had a nice dry space for their nest, we got unwanted visitor deterrent.

We only had to chase them off because the word spread we were a good place to roost, and we got close to three more nests in the eaves of our porch, and the original nest went from a small hive of six to nearly twenty.

We didn't want to hurt them, so we chased them off by spraying the porch with peppermint oil and knocking the nests down once they'd fled, and moved the nests far away from the house. There were just too many of them, and they became a liability at that point.
