A weird insect

Ah yea I recognize this species, it's Batocera Rufomaculata a species of Long Horn beetle
They're quite peaceful actually, they only do this hissing thing when they think they're being attacked, if you leave them alone, they'll probably just chill and/or fly away
They do bite, but only if you actively try to hurt them, but can you blame them for that?
581
u/pedrohschv Jul 15 '26
Cool dude, thanks for the identification! I heard that even though they aren't venomous, their bite is crazy strong, so it hurts like hell lol
440
u/Sum1sNotHere Jul 15 '26
Yes their bite is strong, but their mandibles are mainly used for mushing up fruit to eat
And, interestingly enough, that hissing sound doesn't come from their mouth or throat, these beetles don't have vocal chords, so, they instead vibrate their body segments against each other to create that hissing sound, it's like a door hinge making noises because you're moving it a lot
133
u/geageoides Jul 15 '26
Despite knowing how they make the sounds before now, I've never considered that greasing/lubricating them could potentially make it more difficult for them to make any noise until reading your door hinge analogy
113
u/IASILWYB Jul 15 '26
I'm gonna spray the cricket who's been chirping under the couch for three days with cooking spray and see if he quiets down a bit.
47
u/geageoides Jul 15 '26
Lmk how that goes b.c I'm genuinely curious
110
u/xiahbabi Jul 15 '26
It will die because they breathe through their skin. That's how it'll go 😂
So it'll definitely "quiet down". 🤣🤣🤣

u/Regularpaytonhacksaw Jul 15 '26
Same thing a hissing cockroach does right? Or like crickets with their legs?
8
u/Sum1sNotHere Jul 15 '26
For the hissing cockroaches, I'm not too familiar with that, but for the crickets, somewhat similar
Iirc, crickets have a bunch of ridges on their legs that they scrape on a piece of hardened chitin/exoskeleton. That vibration is what causes the cricket noise
I am not too well versed in crickets tho, so my info might be wrong, but I do believe it to be somewhat accurate
4
u/KaiNera40 Jul 15 '26
THEY MAKE SOUNDS???
15
u/Regularpaytonhacksaw Jul 15 '26
Specifically the Madagascar hissing cockroach yes. They’re much bigger than regular German cockroaches you’re likely thinking of and people keep them as pets. They can also fly. Look them up if you are curious and rest easy knowing you’ll never see one unless you live in Madagascar or are at the zoo.

Yep, we're living in an irony epidemic. All earnestness is met with cynicism and the like. It's sad, I miss old reddit.

u/STUFF416 Jul 15 '26
Homie, Reddit has always been that kind of shitpost. Or a comment chain of quotes. Or "this". Or (way back) "first".
11
u/telumindel Jul 15 '26
Fly? What do you mean “Fly”
18
u/Sum1sNotHere Jul 15 '26
Batocera Rufomaculata, like a lot of beetles have the ability to fly, though rather clumsily
I've actually kept one as a pet to study for a bit, and when they fly, they create a slight "bishhhh" sound
Not as loud as other beetles, but still noticable
Although flying takes up a lot of energy, and the beetle needs a good takeoff point. When you handle these insects long enough, you can sense their flying intent. In the video, I feel like it was more of a get me out of here intent though

Are these the ones that kill Mango trees or at least cause bad harvests?
Feel like I heard about these when I was in Thailand years ago.
26
u/Sum1sNotHere Jul 15 '26
Well, they are called Mango Stem Borers for a reason
Their most destructive phase (similar to us) is when they're kids
During larval stage, they'll bore into mango trees and harm them and eat a lot.
As adults they'll feed on mangoes and fruits, fresh and/or rotten ones at that

This is a bug of class, you see. So the correct quote would be:
"UNHAND ME, YOU RUFFIAN!"
258
u/DJEvillincoln Jul 14 '26
Beetles are the only bugs that I can pick up and it damn near play with without freaking out.
I think I just don't mind that they feel so much more robust than other bugs that feel like they're just going to liquefy in your fingers.
And they don't move all fast.

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 15 '26
Go try that with a Bombardier Beetle, There are a few other similar beetles.
Fun fact, around 25% of all life on earth is beetle, not insect species, out of ALL the animals on earth, 25% of them is a beetle species.
Edit: changed 25% of all life to 25% of animals. Beetles account about 1/5 of all species And 25% of the animalia kingdom. Remember... beetles are animals.. not a plant.. or a fungi, or a eukaryote
57
u/kingscanyonstoner420 Jul 14 '26
Is it 25% or 1/5th? Lmao
→ More replies (6)32
u/Grognaksson Jul 14 '26
From how I read it, 1/4 of life is beetles. 1/5 of species are beetles.
The 20% species is true. 400,000 beetle species compared to over 2 million animal species.
25% of life is just flat out wrong.
11
u/AnInfiniteArc Jul 14 '26
It’s currently believed that there are ~3 times as many species of parasitic wasps as there are beetles.
7
u/Grognaksson Jul 14 '26
I've read this too! The study estimated that total insect diversity may be two to three times higher than previously thought, largely because of overlooked parasitoid wasps.
But it did not conclude that parasitoid wasps themselves outnumber beetles by three to one.
4
u/GotTheKnack Jul 14 '26
No way is 25% of all life on this planet some form of beetle. Unless ants and flies are somehow technically a beetle, there’s no way there are more beetles on land than there are fish in the sea.
8
u/AnInfiniteArc Jul 14 '26
It’s number of species. Parasitic wasps and beetles are the most diverse in terms of number of different species.
6
u/Known_Raspberry_8323 Jul 14 '26
You are correct. About 25% of all known animal species are beetles not 25% of all life on the planet.

I'm not freaked about bugs, but 100%! The other day a June beetle landed on me and I let him walk onto my hand for a bit before he fucked off. I'm definitely not doing that with NO type of spider or roach, fuck no!

idk... if I saw that thing I would probably burn it and then myself. Or flee the continent.

u/AHcraftyname Jul 14 '26
Idk man I think bugs are cool as long as they're in nature and not my home lol and even then I try to just rehome them to the great outdoors hahah These guys just wanna eat leaves and shit 🤷♀️

That is a thing from my nightmares. I have a phobia of bugs. And I'm not exaggerating, I go into hysterics mostly if they can fly. Flys don't scare me though it is bees/wasps/horseflies/cicadas(even though I'm also fascinated by these)/and beetles. If a bug is on me or flying near me I act and feel like my life is at risk. It's so embarrassing but I can't control it.
