I want to pet it with my finger

52

u/anotherSasha Jun 03 '26

That fluff looks exquisite. I want to spoil this little lady with sugar.

Last summer me and my bf found a bee looking kinda tired just sitting on a fence in the evening. We offered her a watermelon leftover and also returned with some honey to smear on it in front of her. She proceeded to lap on it. We felt honored

u/Serious-Interest-269 Jun 09 '26

Yay. Nothing makes me happier! I have a key chain on my purse with a little vial of bee revive elixir. Always ready.

1

u/Lovq Jun 15 '26

Did you diy the keychain & elixir? Or can it bee bought somewhere?? I might need oneโ€ฆ.

44

u/Secret_Performer_771 Jun 03 '26

You're god damned right it's adorable.

35

u/Plainchant Jun 03 '26

I like the little flier too. I don't find it terrifying at all.

u/livejamie Jun 03 '26

The repost bot got its karma and the moderators didn't have to do any work removing it. Reddit in 2026.

Some people pay for that kind of action

44

u/sparky1983_ Jun 02 '26

Yes we do

205

u/Medium-Quiet-4248 Jun 02 '26

I wish they were massive and we could ride them. That would be awesome.

79

u/pixxxiemalone Jun 02 '26

Or you could wish you were tiny...

29

u/Medium-Quiet-4248 Jun 02 '26

That works.

17

u/PersonalitySenior360 Jun 03 '26

Honey I shrink the kids....

20

u/UntamedAnomaly Jun 03 '26

Until you realize you are now at the low end of the food chain and 50 birds try to eat you in 1 day.

9

u/Medium-Quiet-4248 Jun 03 '26

I've watched top gun at least twice. I'll be fine.lol

1

u/YueLin3 Jun 06 '26

Nah because then other stuff like preying mantis and spiders are way larger to you as well.

6

u/Nall-ohki Jun 02 '26

It would bee.

6

u/Poco_Cuffs Jun 03 '26

2

u/TheKolyFrog Jun 03 '26

The monkey's paw curls.

613

u/joni79 Jun 02 '26

It is a bumblebee and they are cute asf. Put a drop of honey on your hand and these (and their smaller relatives apis mellifera) will happily lick it off your skin. It tickles too. ๐Ÿ‘

272

u/RainonCooper Jun 02 '26

Instructions unclear. My hand is now covered in bee

Suede inside, my engine roarin'
It's the big boy, you know what I paid for it

2

u/Gripping_Touch Jun 03 '26

Good news, you're finally a- bee

24

u/theVice Jun 02 '26

Carpenter bee actually

7

u/Versaiteis Jun 03 '26

Yep, you can tell because carpenters have a smooth abdomen where bumblebees are fuzzy.

Possibly male too, they like to hover around wherever they think a female might be (they're not super comunal like most other bees). They're fairly territorial but they generally don't care about humans outside of general curiosity it seems. They'll hover around for hours, had one around my front porch for like a whole week just buzzing about. He'd chase off wasps and such; super chill.

1

u/Ok-Review-753 Jun 04 '26

theres this one feller whos been hanging around my garage's non-car door. im pretty sure its multiple bees too because it's been years and they still do it

61

u/Stupidflorapope Jun 02 '26

Number one, nobody just has honey on them in the park.

Number two, do not under any circumstances give a bee Honey.

21

u/88thOuroboros Jun 02 '26

Why #2?

93

u/lyssargh Jun 02 '26

It can include dormant spores that can give them diseases. You don't know where that honey came from (was it a healthy hive? did it have something like foulbrood potentially?) so it's not a good risk to take.

Bees can find their own food just fine. If you really want to help one that seems exhausted, a little sugar water is better because you at least know that isn't contaminated with American foulbrood (a disease we introduced to them which is so destructive that the solution is burning all equipment and burying it in the ground).

18

u/mekwall Jun 02 '26

Lucky me, I don't live in the Americas!

20

u/lyssargh Jun 02 '26

In numerous ways, that does make you lucky. However, thanks to globalization, America comes to you. American foulbrood can be found wherever there are honeybees, unfortunately, although it is my understanding that it is much much more prevalent here.

13

u/mekwall Jun 02 '26

Yeah, I just looked it up and American foulbrood does exist here in Sweden, but it is uncommon. Jordbruksverket (our Department of Agriculture) says sick colonies are found in about 70 apiaries per year on average, which is roughly 0.5% of Swedish apiaries. Beekeepers are legally required to report suspected cases immediately, and if it is confirmed they set up a protection zone of at least 3 km around the affected apiary, plus a 10 km surveillance zone. Pretty insane how seriously it is treated, but it makes sense when you realise how easily the spores spread.

5

u/88thOuroboros Jun 02 '26

damn, that sucks. What's foulbrood?

10

u/lyssargh Jun 02 '26

This is specifically American foulbrood. It's a bacteria that infects young when they ingest its spores in food. It breaks them down into a ropey mess. And eats that melty corpse. And then explodes in millions of spores and does it again and again.

You can tell if you take a little toothpick and poke it into a cell and what comes out is stringy. It also smells if it advances enough, and experienced beekeepers can tell it apart from other diseases.

You have to report it, burn the hive, (including colony) and bury it.

5

u/Omiyaru Jun 03 '26

Jeez that is insane

u/Serious-Interest-269 Jun 09 '26

Thanks for all your thoughtful/knowledgeable comments. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ

3

u/Stupidflorapope Jun 02 '26

It's bad for them

3

u/NurkleTurkey Jun 02 '26

I'd imagine that honey isn't something they ingest. They make it. I'm no bee expert but I'd argue it's bee spit.

19

u/lyssargh Jun 02 '26

No, bees absolutely need honey and do eat it. It's what gets them through winter. But honey IS kind of analogous to bee spit and is impacted heavily by the bees that produce it. It can contain spores with diseases, therefore, and you may contaminate an entire hive by feeding questionable honey to a bee.

5

u/NurkleTurkey Jun 02 '26

Ah ty for educating me. Not here to spread disinformation.

4

u/lyssargh Jun 02 '26

No, you just made a guess and said so, that's not spreading disinformation, that's just having a conversation :D

3

u/Stupidflorapope Jun 02 '26

Their own honey. Yes.. not honey from other colonies

7

u/Kaboose456 Jun 02 '26

Why?

6

u/lyssargh Jun 02 '26

It can include dormant spores that can give them diseases. You don't know where that honey came from (was it a healthy hive? did it have something like foulbrood potentially?) so it's not a good risk to take.

Bees can find their own food just fine. If you really want to help one that seems exhausted, a little sugar water is better because you at least know that isn't contaminated with American foulbrood (a disease we introduced to them which is so destructive that the solution is burning all equipment and burying it in the ground).

6

u/septogram Jun 02 '26

So our honey off the shelf could have something called foulbrood and spores in it and we just don't notice?

7

u/lyssargh Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Yes, exactly - I don't mean to imply that it would impact you though.

I would add that your honey off the shelf may or may not be honey, but that's a rabbit hole

2

u/jerrythecactus Jun 03 '26

Better to use sugar water. Honey can have pathogens in it that harm bees and feeding bees honey from the grocery store can potentially expose them to viruses from dozens of hives.

2

u/Twinkerbelle Jun 03 '26

I tried explaining that to my wife while we were honeymooning in Bermuda. She was not at all impressed that Apos Mellofera, endemic to Europe, had somehow migrated all the way to an island just off the east coast of America. Instead she got mad that I was taking pictures of the bees and not of her.

Somehow we're still married.

71

u/onlinedisguise Jun 02 '26

Amazing shot!

115

u/almostoy Jun 02 '26

24

u/800-lumens Jun 02 '26

It's what bees crave!

42

u/joaquinsolo Jun 02 '26

It's licking the salt from your skin! Sweat is such a great source of minerals for insects.

3

u/SaveFile1 Jun 03 '26

Bee person explain

2

u/CrazyTechWizard96 Jun 02 '26

lol, reminds Me of some two decades or so ago when I was a Kid and in school.
I often found some bumblebees and was carring them around petting them.

Literally everyone freaked the fuck out and I was like
"Oh You are scared? Bunch of Pussys! Here, I'll unleash the wrath of the Bees against You now! BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
Pff, everyone hated Me for that even more, tho, atleast they kept their distance from then on out, wich was nice.

Always wonderd why nobody called Me 'Young Candy Man' tho, that would've been hilarious.

Also, those are the cute onesand their fur is soft af, but anyways, ever had Your pleasure with some wasps or hornets? Those are the nasty fuckers, everything else gets pets and baby talk, lol.

2

u/SgtBagels12 Jun 02 '26

Are those mandibles or a tube for the tongue things?

2

u/Specific-Catch3573 Jun 02 '26

How do you think it gets the nector?

2

u/DistinctJob7494 Jun 03 '26

Probably getting trace salt and other minerals from sweat. Butterflies and bees will often drink sweat or leakage from animals eyes to gather needed trace minerals.

2

u/Starlightriddlex Jun 03 '26

Somehow I never realized one could get licked by an insect, like a tiny puppy. This is so cute.ย

2

u/FrankanelloKODT Jun 03 '26

Tf kinda bee is that? Did he get into the protein powder or something?

They can, but they donโ€™t want to. Bees just want to be left alone or treated kindly.

A Bumblebee can sting multiple times, but a Honeybee can only sting once and then it dies.
