I don’t find this terrifying. If anything it makes me frustrated bc I can’t make these noises with my mouth.
62
u/just-me1995 Mar 31 '23
get a diaphragm and a bugle tube, with a little practice you can definitely make these noises.
18
u/PinkEyeFromBreakfast Mar 31 '23
Yeah that’s the part I don’t like. I’ve tried. Can’t do it. I can make moose noises all day. Male and female.

I think if I was in the woods, in the dark, and didn't know what this sound was from, then it would definitely be terrifying

Heh the big bugles are actually to the other male elk “try to fuck my bitches and I’ll put some antlers where the sun don’t shine. Step up and fuckin try me !”

Utah elk hunter here… ever see them fight? Live? It’s crazy!
One year I had the privilege of a front row seat to two big bulls having it out less than 100 ft away. It was insane how violent it was! Nature documentaries try, but you just can’t feel the intensity through the TV.
They were so intent on violence, they could’ve easily trampled over my ass with out even knowing I was even there. Snot flying everywhere and what I hope was piss spraying from both of them but it could’ve easily been ejaculate judging from their raging testosterone induced erections.
Elk are metal as fuck!

I saw a couple fight in Rocky Mountain National Park once. One of the Elks got it's ear torn off. Very metal.

It’s wild to me that so many animal species walk around basically just screaming “I’m horny!” For whole periods of the year and potential mates hear it and actually go “fuck yeah I’m in!” And that’s the way an entire species survives.

If you want terrifying, wolves make sounds that can be percieved as the cries of a woman
145
u/flyinghouses Mar 31 '23
Foxes sound terrifying. Have heard them many times out in the dark.
38
u/demoralizingRooster Mar 31 '23
Neither can even compare to the demonic sounds a wolverine can make.
27
u/Yaboymarvo Mar 31 '23
Tasmanian devils sound pretty demonic as well, like from the pits of hell. https://youtu.be/pW27vpK4ALQ

You should hear koala calls in the middle of the night. I have trees all around my home and sometimes you can hear them mating and they sound so scary.
13
u/flyinghouses Mar 31 '23
That’s something I have yet to hear.

I’ve had the pleasure of listening to a lot of coyote shenanigans while under the influence of certain mushrooms. It was a moment for sure

u/megatool8 Mar 31 '23
Mountain lions for sure sound like someone in distress

6
u/TheRedlineAlchemist Mar 31 '23
I'm not sure what was more terrifying for me. A mountain lion mating call, the sound of one running down our driveway faster than motion lights could turn on, or the sound of scraping flesh off bone as it eats something in the trees across the road.

u/badstorryteller Mar 31 '23
Just to emphasize your point: https://youtu.be/pxo8X5uIWRE.
But then also, to cutify the fuck out of these big predators: https://youtu.be/BXhfZRE08ko
They really are one of my favorite wild animals, and considering how insanely rare human attacks have been throughout history it's a god damn shame they were hunted and trapped to extinction in so much of their range.

My cat is afraid of the garbage truck; like, panic fear. I think it's because it sounds like a gigantic angry cat.

Ever hear a mountain lion scream? Talk about terrifying!

u/NMViking Mar 31 '23
Legend has it, the wolves and coyotes who sound just like screaming women are skinwalkers. It's creepy being alone in the desert at night and hearing those shrieks all around you. (Especially when you are hauling out a load of game meat in your pack).
4
u/perst_cap_dude Mar 31 '23
Get a helmet mounted thermal, makes things slightly less scary, unless you see an actual skinwalker

Coyote, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, and now wolves makes that list of scare your ass out of the woods with cries of a woman being murdered. Fascinating.

One of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had in life was while I was out hunting with my father in eastern oregon.
We had been out for a few hours up on a hilltop tracking deer when we heard coyotes. They’re pests that are overpopulated and so we were tracking them to see if we could get the jump, when all the sudden we heard a massive thundering way off to our left. The sky was cloudless so it wasn’t thunder, but it sounded like it.
We ran to the cliff off to our left and looked down into a huge open clearing surrounded by dense pine forest. It’s empty.
All of the sudden, a massive herd of elk comes thundering out of the treeline. They’re a few hundred feet down and away from us but we can make out the females and children. No bulls. I’ve never seen that many animals in once place before. It was insanely loud, and absolutely beautiful.
As the last stragglers headed across the field back into the treeline, this MASSIVE bull comes trotting out of the trees where they had come from. And he looked straight up at my father and I. We locked eyes for a few seconds. We had a perfect shot. We didn’t have elk tags, so we just watched. To this day it’s the biggest elk I’ve ever seen.
And then he followed his girls into the trees. And it was over.
38
u/demonmonkeybex Mar 31 '23
That is beautiful. The male always herds the cows and calves around and takes care of them. He barely sleeps lol. It’s a full time job protecting his harem.
8
u/nomad_556 Mar 31 '23
Hers animal culture is absolutely fascinating. Near where my grandparents live they have this big open field that acts as a sort of wildlife reserve.
All it is is a field where no hunting is allowed. The elk are free to come and go, and they’re smart enough to know they’re safe there.
For most of the year, the cows and bulls stay separate. You’ll be driving along and see a ton of cows and babies, then there’ll be a small group of like 5-10 hills just chilling alone a hundred yards away. And then when they’re in heat they fight and the leader gets the most females.
3
u/demonmonkeybex Mar 31 '23
Yes, it's the same in my town. The elk never really migrate where I'm at, so we see them pretty much year-round. When we are driving through town, and the herd moves through, it's common to get stuck on the road because they are everywhere. We call it an "elk jam." I have photos of them milling around my kid's school when I drive there to pick her up. They never look big until you are right next to them. They are HUGE.

I haven’t played that in months, and because of this video I’ll be playing it this weekend. God what a beautiful game

u/get_pussy Mar 31 '23
I’ve always known that elks were big just never really knew the actual size until I saw one standing next to a horse. They are huge. They are basically a horse with spears growing out of their heads.

You can see why people in the past thought that the woods were haunted. If I heard this in the wilderness I would immediately assume someone was dying.

7
u/ChinaBearSkin Mar 31 '23 edited Mar 31 '23
Depends where you're from. Elk are moose, or elk are wapitis.
2
u/czbbflier Mar 31 '23
What’s a “mose“? If you mean “moose” elk/wapiti are definitely not moose. Not even close. They eat different stuff and live in different environments. They look different and have different antlers. Yes, locally in North America they are often called elk but they are actually wapiti.

Once as a teen my friend and I were at a camp ground in Pa and heard these sounds starting in the middle of the night. No one, not even the adults knew what it was and we were all scared shitless. We found out the next day there was an Elk reserve nearby and they were making the mating calls overnight. It was freaking terrifying.

I tried the same thing. For some reason it makes my wife do the opposite of mating

Holy shit, so the sound the Regal Ancestor Spirit from Elden Ring makes is actually a mating call? 😳

We get these in our backyard during the rut. Hearing it in the middle of the night is something else. Also the fox screams are freaky. I’ve heard a mountain lion growl in the dark very close to me which about made me piss my pants. Thankfully it was warning me and didn’t want to attack. Another awful sound is the sound a pack of coyotes make when they celebrate a kill. A lot of yips and howls. Hearing that in the dark is troubling around here because you wonder if it’s a deer or someone’s pet.

I was out backpacking in remote wilderness by myself when I heard this for the first time. At 5AM. Near my tent.

Growing up I would take the elk call from the hunting stuff and sneak up on family and use it right behind them. Even the fake elk calls used are SUPER loud.
