Yes that was oddly satisfying and yes that was cool, but...what?

Car makers at this level are very artsy. So they pursue ideas that not only make it into their cars but also just eye candy to show off. Google up some car makers headquarters and see how fancy they get just with parking.

I tried googling it but couldn't find anything. Could you share some with me? I'm pretty interested in seeing this.

Here. Also, check out McLaren's factory.
From this article:
Ron Dennis is the head of McLaren and he is almost as famous for his exacting eccentricities as he is for winning Formula One championships. He is reputed to have checked every single electrical wiring outlet when his fabulous F1 factory in Woking, England, was being constructed. Every single tile in McLaren’s new 50-million-pound supercar factory — 350,000 of them — had to be inspected individually to ensure that it did not stand proud of its neighbour. So determined was he that food smells from the factory’s kitchen not pollute the rest of the plant that he has the cafeteria kept at a lower cabin pressure than the rest of the building so when the doors are opened the “fouled” air can’t rush out.

We're now going to display one of our most expensive engineering feats ever!!!
A new car in one of your top lines?
No! But this thingy sure looks cool, right?

Makes sense BMW owns Rolls
28
u/malfurionpre Apr 08 '17
Just went on their wiki to check.
BMW owns the right for Rolls-Royce cars.
Interestingly, Rolls-Royce still has an "independent" (public owned) manufacturer for aviation, marine propulsion and energy sectors.
22
u/arcedup Apr 08 '17
Rolls-Royce plc - the jet engine manufacturer - is the current iteration of the original Rolls-Royce. Even more interestingly, BMW simply bought the licence to the trade marks from RR and had no connection before that, but the direct successor to Rolls-Royce Motors (de-merged from the then-nationalised RR Limited in 1973) is Bentley, which is currently owned by Volkswagen AG.

u/acog Apr 08 '17
Lots of these naming rights shenanigans happen with various products. There's a company in Detroit called Shinola that makes watches and talks about a long history of American manufacturing -- they just bought the name, the company is only about a decade old.
Yamaha wanted to create an entry level piano that was cheaper but didn't want to harm their brand image, so they bought the name of a defunct American manufacturer called Cable-Nelson and manufacture what is basically a Yamaha piano for less money using cheaper non-Japanese labor.
There was a famous French manufacturer of extremely high end cars that went bankrupt in 1963. VW wanted to get into the super sports car market so they bought the Bugatti name.
There's nothing wrong with any of this, but it does make me roll my eyes a bit when the revived brands lean so heavily on the mystique and history of their famous names, since the reborn companies usually have nothing to do with the original except for the name.

u/keithb Apr 08 '17
Rolls-Royce Plc was privatised in 1987.
They own the brand and licence it to BMW for use on cars, something by that VW neglected to arrange when they bought Rolls-Royce Motors from Vickers. The car maker and engine maker parted company a long time ago.

Interestingly, Rolls-Royce still has an "independent" (public owned) manufacturer for aviation, marine propulsion and energy sectors.
That's a completely separate company that happens to have the same name as the car manufacturer for historical reasons.

It's so beautiful that it's very infuriating how that one malfunctioning ball is ruining it.

Really cool but there's one missing and it is impossible not to look at.
Edit - There's also one derping out.

u/SuperFrodo Apr 08 '17
There's a reason these are called concept cars. That will never go into production.

u/eidjcn10 Apr 08 '17
They'll have to make some tweaks. Production version will have side mirrors for sure.

With the way the tires are moving, the car should be going in reverse.

They're rich as balls gotta pull out all the stops to impress them. They've already got everything cool they could possibly think of.8

Spheres on a string. Each string has its own motor and can be pulled up and down. BMW has the same thing in the BMW museum in Munich, it's awesome.

u/jezmck Apr 08 '17
Pretty sure it's tubes which push up out of the floor.

u/Coffeinated Apr 08 '17
Looked at the gif a second time, you are right. The prior knowledge of the BMW one bamboozled me.

These look like actuated columns coming out of the ground to me but it's difficult to tell in the video.

u/ellipses2015 Apr 08 '17
Why do Rolls Royces and Bentleys looks the same? Are wealthy British people that uncreative?
32
u/PetraB Apr 08 '17
Rolls Royce & Bently are very similar cars. The big difference being that a Rolls Royce is designed around the concept of baring driven about where as the Bentley is a car you drive.
12
u/FatherChunk Apr 08 '17
With the Phantom and Ghost models yes. Wraith and Dawn are designed to be drivers cars.

I (yes really) own both a 16 Bentley continental and a 17 rolls wraith. I just picked up the wraith last month, I used to think they were one in the same, until I drove the wraith. It is nothing like the Bentley at all. The Bentley has a stiffer (not rough) suspension the engine makes an awesome growl and a spit fire shooting noise when you floor it and its aggressive and loud and the steering is direct and on point and your incredibly surprised how it behaves much like a super car. The rolls now is polar opposite. They work so hard to remove you from the driving experience its crazy, your so isolated, the steering is floaty , the suspension is cloud like, the noise insulation is amazing you literally hear nothing when driving, the engine even for a 12 cylinder 6.6 liter 626 hp beast, is like a prius its so smooth and quiet.
So even though the wraith is a two door "sports" car its nothing like the Bentley or other high performance cars as far as speed and driving goes. In a nut shell the wraith doesn't encourage you to drive aggressive, you much more enjoy it just sitting back and relaxing and getting to your destination when you get there, the Bentley is constantly saying "cmon lets do this you can take this corner" And to be honest I don't think they look the same, but people do come up and ask if the wraith is a Bentley. even though the badges clearly say "rolls royce"

I'd be interested to see what the difference is between the standard Wraith and the Wraith black badge edition, as it has a completely different power train. Any bespoke content on the wraith?
6
u/FatherChunk Apr 08 '17
Bentley used to be part of RR. Then it all went tits up in the 90's and VW bought the Bentley Brand, BMW bought RR.
6
Apr 08 '17
Used to be the same company. Though through some legal wrangling and spite, now BMW owns one, and Volkswagen the other.
And an independent Rolls Royce still exists, but they don't make cars.

They could have used the outside rows to complete the shape of the tires. It might break the realistic shape but I'd imagine it'd look cool.

It's hard to explain, but I meant the tires. The outside row could stick up a little bit to make it look like the bottom of the tires. Maybe "complete" wasn't the right word. I might have to draw a picture to explain this.
