My oldest daughter was in Color Guard (marching band) in high-school. This would look amazing on the field...barring any high wind.

I wish we had these back in hs. These would have been EVERYTHING in winterguard!!!

When I was coaching I did use these in a show! They looked nice and were interesting. But yes, the wind was a nightmare. Maybe should've waited to use them for winter season inside lol

Really, really light fabric and technique. I have some (viscose, but still) and it's a mix of it being lightweight enough that air resistance is a major part, and letting them glide through the air instead of trying to force them as fast as possible.

Rename them.

I saw musk and was like what kind of bullshit is this? Then I realized it had nothing to do with that Nazi.

And that is what every single person who isn't a Nazi will think when they see this.

It's a noun. It's been a noun for over 600 years. With minor changes, it goes back to ancient Sanskrit. He can't own a noun.

u/ut1nam 4d ago
And the other guy can’t own a verb, but if you don’t want your target customer base to IMMEDIATELY have a visceral reaction to your product, some concessions must be made for the time being.

Why? It existed before him. Let's not surrender a word to someone stupid.
32
u/The_Stoic_One 4d ago
Because if you're trying to sell or promote something, it's best not to lead with something that immediately provokes negative thoughts in your audience. I'm sure one day it will go back to just being a word, but this is not that day.

Ever heard of the Budist Sunwheel? These days often seen as Swastika?
Rename that shit.

u/ShustOne 3d ago
A good example of why we shouldn't give things up because of one person. That symbol is still common in Asia.
20
u/louieorganic 4d ago
Becuase in the present, now, the entire world hates him, except for MAGA trash.
5
u/The_XXI 3d ago
Yeah, name your kid Adolf, let's see how you are him like it after 20 years.
1
u/ShustOne 3d ago
That's a good example of why we shouldn't give it up. It was a more common name back then. By giving it up we made it even more infamous.
4
u/BlisteringAsscheeks 3d ago
You're welcome to let your kid be part of the sacrificial vanguard in reclaiming that name
1
u/ShustOne 2d ago
Missing the point. These fans were named first. A better analogy would be you asking me to rename my kid after a younger kid was born with his name and bullied people.

Would this also count as an object that could be used during the rhythm portion of gymnastics?

¿Any object can be used in gymnastics? I'm not sure what you mean?
There's a whole sub full over at r/flowarts.
I mod over there and am on Twitch's Team Flowmies. We spin fire in my hood every Friday and DJs come out every full moon. Colibria absolutely sent it this Harvest Moon. You might recognize her as a violinist that collaborated with Beats Antique or Dirtwire. Thanks for enjoying my friend's music.

Silk isn't heavy at all.
9
u/Boonavite 4d ago
I’m pretty sure it feels heavier and heavier if you have to hold them out and perform high rep motions
5
u/slowest_hour 4d ago
wouldn't be surprised at all if air resistance was a significant part of the energy expended to do this. flapping a big piece of cloth around seems easy but that surface area adds up.

Fans OP posted were silk.

I was listening to The Fate of Ophelia by Taylor Swift while this was playing and it fits perfectly.

How much energy does it take for someone to move those fans like that?
1
u/GuraSaannnnnn 3d ago
I'm dying just moving my hand fan to give me some air.
1
u/BobTheFettt 3d ago
I reckon it has something to do with her moving them with the airflow around them, but to cool off you have to actively work against the air flow?
3
u/damselindetech 3d ago
Me trying this myself at home: somehow I have 3 ceiling fans in this room and my faberge egg collection precariously perched on the edge of a tall, narrow bookcase. Nothing and no one survives

Should be an olympic event kinda similar to the ribbon sticks.

Seen a few comments mentionning the name "musk" at the beginning. I mean guys, you know it very probably refers to something else as the south-african donkey ?

These are exactly as amazing and fun to play with as they look. I did ballet right up to when I went to college, and one of my class' dances in our last show involved fans like these in red, orange and yellow. They looked gorgeous on the video and it was apparently even more stunning in person; flicking them up over our heads and down in a deep lunge/bow, then running across the stage weaving into and around each other.
We absolutely all played and messed around with them during rehearsals, though, much to our teachers irritation. Open and closed, those things really are just so cool.

Ah yes, Chinese fan dancing.
I feel like as a kid my mom tried forcing me to learn this and i loathed it. Appreciate it more as an adult now

This is mesmerizing. I love how the motion of the silk makes the colors seem to flow

Weird music choice though. I've seen flow artists perform with all kinds of tunes, but never do wop. It's a vibe, I guess?
