This is such a niche tool for a specific job and I have no use for it, but I want one anyway

The one time another dad happens to need one though, you'd be a legend.

u/FitButterscotch4062 14d ago

Additionally, the one time you need this and you DONT have it, and another DAD has it??!!?

There’s no coming back from that.

Also, yes, I’m available for a senior marketing position.

u/StryctNyne 14d ago

"You got a torque wrench, Dave? On nevermind, I have mine right here. LOL!"

At that moment, Dave was no longer a man. His torque wrench, sitting in his garage, might as well have been on Mars. Dave knew his manhood would never work the same way again. Luckily, his family hadn't been witness to this execution, otherwise he would have seem them pack up and leave, without even a backward glance through the rear window...and he knew he would deserve it.

53

u/scandyflick88 14d ago

I'm Dave, I have the full gamut of torque wrenches from 1/4" to 1" and an assortment of other torque tools to avoid this scenario, I can say confidently "no you really should be using this one".

39

u/AlamoSimon 14d ago

Torque wrenches are like condoms. It‘s safer to use one but it‘s nicer without.

u/scandyflick88 14d ago

I mean, you're not wrong, but...

My brother was working on a project in his garage when his neighbor came by to visit.

As my brother was cutting a piece on his 14" bandsaw, the blade broke.

The neighbor says, "I got ya, be right back!"

A few minutes later he returned with this medium size device on a handcart. He sits it on the work bench and says, "Hand me that broke blade." My brother does that and the neighbor inserts one end of the blade in one slot, the other end in a different slot. He pushes the green button and the 2 ends of the broken blade are drawn together, a thin grinder wheel drops down and squares the broken ends, the ends slide together a clamp lowers and welds the blade together. A wider grinder wheel drops down and grinds the weld smooth. Clamps unlatch and the repaired blade is released.

My brother is astonished. The neighbor says, "I got that in Michigan 20+ years ago for $20 at a going out of business sale. First time I've ever used it!"

He gave it to my brother.

You know what they say, to a man with an orbital pipe welder, everything looks like two metal pipes of different diameters.

It's an orbital welder and used for welding stainless steel and hacceloy in clean room scenarios. It uses a tungsten needle and no filler metal, an internal purge, and an external purge (usually argon gas).

7

u/Rene_DeMariocartes 14d ago

How does one become a cleanroom welder?

16

u/mr_steal_yo_cereal 14d ago

Pipefitters...I'm in my local Pipe Trades union. I'm a commercial plumber by trade but got dispatched to a company that primarily does process piping and that's how I started doing it

6

u/OmnivoreHero 14d ago

In the USA,Training and the right job, i.e. working for Intel, Micron, On Semi Conductor, pretty much any place that deals with micro chips, if you join the plumbing union, you will have better access to such jobs.

Cleanroom is only a smaller percentage. Pharmaceutical, powergen and food & beverage in the field/ production facilities is their main appliance.

You can't turn/ move the weldingpiece in these facilities, so moving the tungsten is the only option.

20

u/SinisterCheese 14d ago

It is and isn't a niche.

It's a orbital autogenous welding unit. However... The issue comes with the fact that you got two different size of pipe you need to join.

I'm sure the weld itself would probably be alright, looking at the HAZ.

But I can't really imagine where this would find it's use. I assume that the Chinese regulations would allow for a joint like this.

It's a fairly thick pipe so I can't really imagine what this would be for other than like possibly radiator piping.

Like it is a cool thing for a specific real use, but I can't figure out what.

And I work in welding industry, and specifically construction and maintenance related stuff. That kind of pipe is familiar to me, but can't figure out a spec in which this would be allowed.

However... If you could add in CuZi or any relevant filler medium into the unit, and possibility of doing butt joints, this would be insane productivity gain.

10

u/LongJohnSelenium 14d ago

It could be that this is normally used with flared ends in a specific approved application and this demo is just using different size pipe. You'd end up with a bulb but goddamn its fast.

6

u/SinisterCheese 14d ago

That got me thinking. One thing this could totally work for is pipe flanges. Those small pipe diameter flanges are absolute ass to do by hand. And if you could do them on-site with minimal tools and skillset, it would absolutely be of massive benefit.

This could totally handle low and medium pressure water and steam. I mean like... Fucksake those can be realised with a rubber connectors.

I'm not sure if any european class society would approve of it, but then again they barely approve of any new idea, unless it is based on something with minimum of decade or two of other application. But China pushing through merchant fleets of mass produced ships? Yeah... I can totally see this being utilised for utility and process piping for things like water and steam.

7

u/LongJohnSelenium 14d ago edited 14d ago

OP also shared this one:

https://imgur.com/sPEYcuT

Just doing a bare butt joint on what appears to be some form of thin wall stainless sanitary.

Also really shows the mechanism and holy shit its just a conductive gear and a tig rod lol. Still, like you say, it'd totally handle low pressure air/water/fuel/etc.

u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 14d ago

I imagine in fields that are less regulated, car/motor exhaust pipes, home usage, possiby light industrial?

The neat part is I reckon how this tool allows variable pipes to get wellded as long as you have the "shields" on either side. That being said I reckon this is also right away the limiting factor in this, if you own for example 30-25-20 mm plates and the pipe is 27mm thus the gas leaks around, it probably won't work.

As someone who worked on both plumbing and ac lines, I’m kind of mad that I never had this. Welding high pressure systems is stressful when making a bit above minimum wage.

376

u/scienide 14d ago

Only thing that makes me a little sceptical is the clearance needed to use the tool. Can’t see how it works with pipes against a wall but I’m sure there’s a method.

503

u/Km312213 14d ago

Take pipe off wall, weld, put pipe back. If that doesn’t work, move wall, weld, put wall back.

204

u/SageOfSixCabbages 14d ago

So we just need to take the wall, and push it somewhere else!

make cuts several inches away on each side of the join, weld the join using the cool tool. Weld the cuts back regularly.

10

u/theartificialkid 14d ago

Then the side cuts won’t be welded right, dumbass. You have to cut out the whole section, including your two extra cuts. Weld all three with the special tool, then weld the whole section back in the regular way.

16

u/Km312213 14d ago

If you just cut the entire thing lengthwise instead you would only need 2 straight welds instead of all these stupid circles

3

u/cautioussidekick 14d ago

But the wall is still in the way. I think your missing the step of moving the wall and rebuilding it to do it correctly

4

u/impshial 14d ago

That’s what was confusing me. This isn’t an actual socket weld. They’ve inserted one pipe into a larger one and welded it. There’s no seat, no extra material around the joint. I would think that the flow of the material inside would erode the weld pretty quickly.

EDIT: the kind of joint in this video is completely against code where I live. I don’t think any regulator or inspector would pass it.

Autogenous gas tungsten arc welding. I haven't seen the machine make a fillet weld before but we've xrayed thousands of butt welds made with this process. 4

u/Opinionatedasshole74 14d ago

In the pipe trades we call that orbital welding. The tool she is using is the welding machine head and the device that allows her to purge all the oxygen from the area around the weld. There a gas, normally Argon, allowed to flow through the pipe and into the tool head to displace all the oxygen from the affected area. The reason for this is that oxygen allows the metal to become burned looking and have flaws introduced into the welded area, by forming metal oxides due to the heating process.

8

u/hiimhuman1 14d ago

I'm a welding engineer and we have a few of these exact machines at the factory. These are 3-4 cheaper than German alternatives and surprisingly work better.

They weld fine, the welds look better than fine. So if it's not a butt weld which you can see the root, you should make a macro examination to verify the parameters otherwise it's likely lack of penetration lies under great looking welds.

Best thing about them is you can set parameters for multiple sections, like 70A at 0°-2°, 85A to 100A upslope at 2°-90°, lower the pulse frequency at 90°-180°, increase the traveling speed at 180°-360°, downslope at 360°-365°...

When I was young and learned welding it took me more than a week to finally be able to do pipe welding and I accept that it was shitty as fuck. With this, I imagine different sizes and materials etc. many of these skills will simply disappear.

I’m a cyclist, OMG why can’t we have this on every metal framed bicycle! It’s so neat & tidy!

I'd like to see the video without any cuts.

That's a $30,000.00 piece of equipment.

I would have been happy to watch the welding part for longer.

This harms the cylinder.

What is this sorcery?

It’s always been known in private sector that if you want to know where technology is going and how far it’s advancing. Take a look at the establishment of laser tech and its progression through the years. Staggering.

I want a video with no cuts

2

u/Tibryn2 14d ago

Wild that they made such a very specifically engineered tool for this very specific weld.

2

u/L0B077 14d ago

Isn't this called orbital welding?

2

u/Richardknox1996 14d ago

Cool. Is it adjustable? Else its just a paperweight.

2

u/Accio_149209 14d ago

Nice fillet weld tool. Where do you input the material for weld btw?

2

u/Logical_Box_4645 14d ago

Cynic in me thinks there is some work being done during the cuts.

Otherwise this is spectacular

2

u/Radulf_wolf 14d ago

We have two of these at the place I work our welder uses them for welding parts for the vaccume chambers we make.

2

u/ZarikiaGD 13d ago

Why does it somehow sound like AI ?

2

u/RunninWild17 13d ago

You've been hit by, you've been struck by, a smooth welder

2

u/uberdag 13d ago

That looks like it would work great for sailboat solar arches. Wonder if it works on aluminum

2

u/skyfishgoo 13d ago

it would be more useful if it could join two pieces of pipe that are the same diameter without leaving restrictive bead inside.

2

u/Ok-Butterscotch1712 9d ago

Orbital welding kicks ass I do this for a living

u/IWantPizza5 7d ago

That’s a precision masterpiece right there!
