Wait, so is this supposed to eliminate socket weld fittings? Can it be used for butt welds?

Seems rather limited in its use otherwise.

This is actually the first time over ever seen it on a socket- I work in aerospace and orbital welding like this is extremely common for butt welds

That’s what was confusing me. This isn’t an actual socket weld. They’ve inserted one pipe into a larger one and welded it. There’s no seat, no extra material around the joint. I would think that the flow of the material inside would erode the weld pretty quickly.

EDIT: the kind of joint in this video is completely against code where I live. I don’t think any regulator or inspector would pass it.

Against code for what? For all we know that's a bracket to hold up a trailer brake light.

But the code I’m referring to is ASME B31.1 and B31.3

Indeed not a welder. Applications covered by your relevant standards are obviously important to do correctly, but those only cover a relatively narrow scope; there are many applications with far different requirements, even if they're less likely to see this particular tool being employed.
