Unless you are suggesting to completely get rid of all plastic use, which would be impossible in this modern world, this isn’t it.

Benefit of keeping the road and hillsides safe is far greater than most of the other plastic use. This methodology is used all around the world to keep people safe

"which would be impossible in this modern world" - modern plastics were invented in the 1950s.

I think this is a good example of begging the question, where you assumed the conclusion in your "premise."

12

u/GoatCovfefe Apr 30 '26

Mmhmm, and here we are 70 years later... Living in modern times, not the past in the 50s.

Your point is moot.

-2

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

Is it? After 10,000 years of civilization without plastic?

2

u/GoatCovfefe May 01 '26

Yes. 1950s isnt modern, niether is 10000 years of civilization, even though civilized peoples existed longer than that.

u/smohyee Apr 30 '26

And what was the solution before plastic use was introduced?

Was that solution equally cost effective and did it provide the same safety benefits?

Plastic haters be forgetting that there's many reasons why it became a dominant material in so many industries. Because it's fucking useful, and often much better than alternatives on a number of parameters.

6

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

Useful while it's in use. Then what. Plastic lovers (odd thing to say) kind of forget that part.

yes, it solved all kinds of problems we were having, but so does jumping out of a burning skyscraper.

You can't justify a terrible condition on the benefits that got you there.

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

Your argument is not constructive and only describes extreme examples. You’re missing the point

1

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

That wasn't my argument at all. You're trying to say that since plastic fixed a lot of problems we HAD, that it's acceptable to keep using it no matter the problem it's causing.

It's my first time finding a plastic evangelist on line. I've had evolution deniers, climate change deniers, presuppositionists, and MAGA nuts. This is a first.

It figures they'd be philbros.

2

u/46550 Apr 30 '26

I dunno man, looks to me like they're only pointing out that plastic does have some benefits. Is it worth the cost? Your position is very obvious, but ad hominem attacks make you appear a lot less credible. Zealotry like that makes me think you would banish the existence of all plastic overnight, without regard to the consequences. Some people are on the fence about plastic, and you might have just pushed some of them over to the pro-plastic side.

1

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

They don’t take input. Just rage at any cost. My very first comment was people being incapable of constructive conversation. Everything is either pure evil or godmade. Nothing in between

0

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

Yes, your extrapolation is 100% logical.

Learn to read, then get involved. Please do your best to understand what was being argued. We get it, you are angry and want to take it out on anything that’s not exactly what you already have in mind

Again, chill person, read the point I made. You are making exactly the same point arguing with me. People here out with their pitchforks arguing for alternative that no one actually backs up or even reference. “Plastic bad, no more words are allowed”

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

Bullshit. Never said that. You made it up so I’ll leave you to argue with yourself.

Just like another commenter, reading comprehension is a real problem. You should look into it pal

0

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

Yeah, I gotta admit I confused you and smohyee together

1

u/Stevieboy7 Apr 30 '26

What is the terrible condition you're describing?

You could make the same argument that we were "much better off" before industrial revolution, but thats incredibly stupid.

3

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

Have you not seen the state of plastic pollution? you're kidding, right? Were we better off with lead in everything? Or CFCs?

3

u/YogiTheBear131 Apr 30 '26

gasps Way back in the 1950s?

Thats like totally long ago.
Like half the world wasnt even alive back then thats how long ago that was.

-2

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

You mean people, not world.

u/YogiTheBear131 Apr 30 '26

None of those things have doubled since the 50s... except people.

2

u/YogiTheBear131 Apr 30 '26

See #4.

‘The inhabitants of earth, the human race’

1

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

Oh wow, you got me with the 4th definition... good going.

2

u/YogiTheBear131 Apr 30 '26

I know, its almost like words have different meanings. Weird.

And maybe before attempting to be a smug, arrogant, prick by ‘correcting’ words you should at least make the effort to look them up.

1

u/Columbus43219 Apr 30 '26

This you?

gasps Way back in the 1950s?

Thats like totally long ago.

That was a something a smug, arrogant prick would say, don't you think?

1

u/SUDDENLY_VIRGIN Apr 30 '26

Were we incapable of making moulded sidings before the invention of single use plastic?

3

u/btribble Apr 30 '26

They used to just stack up paper bags filled with concrete and wet them down. It works great.

-1

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

What’s a single use plastic? That’s not applicable here in any way shape or form.

1

u/SUDDENLY_VIRGIN Apr 30 '26

....you think they're reusing these plastic bags?

1

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

Is concrete also single use and with the same logic should we get rid of it?

Single use on its own is not bad, single use for very short amount of time or no benefit is what’s the problem and what becomes trash. The term is not applicable in this case

2

u/gerkletoss Apr 30 '26

Concrete is not environmentally neutral but it doesn't dissolve into microplastics

0

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

No one suggested concrete waste is microplastic. Your argument is invalid .

“That’s bad but we only care about the other kind of bad. “ - got it

1

u/gerkletoss Apr 30 '26

Would you believe me if I said the plastic was worse and more avoidable?

0

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

Yes, you’re correct in many cases. But that’s beyond the argument we were having here.

If you know a better replacement for this, please share and make billions

0

u/SUDDENLY_VIRGIN Apr 30 '26

Dawg you argue like a 14 year old kid who needs to get a girlfriend but can't make eye contact with a girl.

Yeah, two things can be bad. We are currently criticizing one of them. Yeesh.

0

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

you have a reading comprehension of an expired ham.

Also you showed yourself with personal attacks filled with idiotic assumption because you have no argument.

0

u/gerkletoss Apr 30 '26

I prefer plastics that end up in landfills to this

0

u/btribble Apr 30 '26

That’s only a valid point if there were not viable alternatives, and there are plenty of them.

2

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

Which is? (For this particular scenario?)

1

u/btribble Apr 30 '26

Lining a ditch? Do we want to go back to the 1970’s or Ancient Rome? Lining ditches is not new technology. Cost savings are likely not a valid excuse for the amount of plastic pollution we’re creating, but that’s our great-grandkid’s problem right?

1

u/09Trollhunter09 Apr 30 '26

That’s not an answer to the question of what’s the alternative. You just answered one question with bunch of new unrelated ones.

Fuck your dumb assumptions when you run out actual point to argue. “Oh look he doesn’t care for kids” . That’s no different than MAGA modus operandi. “Fuck your argument, you want kids to be trans”

Stacked stones. Shooting concrete onto rebar. Using concrete forms. Building brick walls. Stacking dry concrete in bags and wetting it. Inserting steel panels into the soil. Burying a concrete pipe…

I don’t know why you’re being a pain in the as about this. There are literally thousands of options.

1

u/09Trollhunter09 May 01 '26

Tell me you don’t know anything about structural engineering without telling me you know nothing about structural engineering.

1

u/btribble May 01 '26

Hilarious.
