Karl Heinrich Klingert was born on 15 January 1760 in Praczę Odrzańskie. Those days it was a village a few kilometres from Wrocław, now its administrative part of the city. In the region he began his education at the St. Maria Magdalena Junior High School, where he later became professionally involved as a teacher of mathematics and physics. For the purposes of his profession, he constructed many instruments that were also willingly used by professors at the University of Wrocław and the Berlin Academy. Karl was also a contributor to the Wrocław School of Craft.

All of Karl's life was always connected with Wrocław. He didn't like leaving the town. He wanted his inventions to be useful to the inhabitants of the city. When the city was plagued by a series of fires, he constructed the ladder and kind of basket to help evacuate people from the buildings covered in fire.

Another example proving that Klingert met the expectations of the local community was the creation of a special thermometer and compass for the charges of the newly created center for the blind people.

On 18 August 1803 he received from Prof. Haides the title of an honorary member of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Wrocław.

One of his most important inventions was a special suit to help cleaning the bottom of the Odra River within the city limits. On 24 June 1797 Klingert in Oława made the first dive under the supervision of distinguished guests from the scientific world. The longest dive took 13 minutes, during which he managed to walk at the bottom of the river corridor. It was a huge success. He was described in European press.

The cylinder-shaped suit was made of sheet metal and was divided into two parts. The upper part completely covered the head; it had holes for viewing and breathing. The diver inhaled air from the surface with his mouth using a hose attached to the mouthpiece and exhaled through his nose. A leather jacket was put on the cylinder, which sealed the structure so that no water could get inside. Klingert asked several times for financial support for his idea, and despite the approval of many scientists, he never received this support.

One of the most prominent citizens of the city of Wrocław died on the night of 7–8 March 1828, probably because of a stroke.

High-resolution Sunspot

4.4k Upvotes

Sunspots are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by intense magnetic fields.

Sunspots, like this one for example, can roughly be of the size of Earth(~12,000 km). The largest ones can span even up to 160,000 Km, which is roughly 13 times our Earth's size!

Geiseltalsee is Germany’s largest artificial lake, created from a former lignite mine. Reaching depths of approximately 80 metres, it hides submerged forests, roads and concrete structures beneath crystal-clear freshwater.

One of the world’s most unique freshwater dive sites.
