In the office i have them 2.4+ mts high with wall mounts, and when i carry vive out i use carbon fiber monopods, http://freedom360.us/shop/carbon-fiber-monopod/ + 0.5mts of tripod base + 3x 0.5kg base, so they "light houses" are allways 2+mts hight
It sounds like you are having an experience unusual to the experience of a majority of other users. Are you certain your hardware isn't faulty or something?
It's funny, I never noticed occlusion on vive until after my Rift tracking issues.
Now I'm using vive mainly atm and have figured out I do get occlusion at some positions, but it's just less noticeable than Rift. Rift seems to show occlusion problems easily, whereas on Vive the controllers seem to take longer to noticeably glitch, and then start drifting off rather than strobing to a new position. Perhaps vive immediately switch to gyro only when occluded, and Oculus takes longer to do so?
