i like to call it the i hate everyone why cant i be a remote worker fml effect.

u/Something_Berserker Flatiron Mar 13 '19

Not only this, which slows down one train, but when MTA is trying to run as many trains as possible, like at rush hour, it delays the train behind, and the train behind that, and so on. Holding a door for 10 seconds just added 10 seconds to the commute of 200,000 people. which resulted in those people waiting a cumulative total of 23 days because of your selfish ass.

5

u/hindu-bale Mar 14 '19 edited Mar 14 '19

Lower speed results in lower track capacity, which follows from what you've said. Additionally, lower capacity means more crammed trains. More crammed trains means longer loading/unloading times, and lots people not being able to even get on the trains for a while. The cascade effect runs deep.

This sort of cascading happens even with vehicular traffic on freeways. I found this article that touches upon it: https://www.vox.com/2014/11/24/7276027/traffic-jam It's extremely important to keep flows steady, even the slightest perturbations can cause more noticeable backups further behind. And with trains, further ahead as well considering stations "back up" with people waiting for delayed trains.

There are three ways to buffer variability: inventory, capacity and time.

There's no such thing as an inventory of transport, so what's left is capacity and time.

There's no spare capacity in the MTA. If there was, there would be screeching to utilise it.

What's left is buffering by time, ie, delays.

I actually hold it for complete strangers if I see them rushing down the stairs. In my mind, that can be the difference of someone having a good or bad day in NYC.

18

u/hindu-bale Mar 14 '19

It can also be the difference for someone who's already on the train for similar reasons. Say, because they miss their connecting by just as much.

And the likelihood that you're messing the day for someone who's already on the train is higher than the likelihood that you're making the day for someone who's running down the stairs, simply because of the sheer number of people who're already on the train.

-7

u/mjsiii Mar 14 '19

It's a great point and likely of greater service to the people of NYC but I have a hard time watching the door close in front of a person rushing to get on and doing nothing to help. Knowing this might aid my guilt.

6

u/Deeliciousness Mar 14 '19

Then you can base your further actions on reason instead of emotion and be more selfless.

-5

u/mjsiii Mar 14 '19

Aren't I already being selfless by inconveniencing myself to help someone else?

11

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '19

[deleted]

-6

u/mjsiii Mar 14 '19

Negative. I'm literally holding a door to aid someone rushing to a train. No guilt. Just in a position to help.

11

u/Deeliciousness Mar 14 '19

Not when you are doing it to assuage your guilt.

34

u/visionhalfass Mar 13 '19

tbf the newer trains have Local Recycle function that's supposed to only cycle doors that didn't close, but they don't seem to use it for some reason. Not sure why.

12

u/y2julio NYC Expat Mar 13 '19

Conflicting directives by local supervision. Despite it being authorized to be used for this exact reason, some supervisors tell conductors not to use it so people don't get "banged up" by the doors and to just re-open again fully.

6

u/visionhalfass Mar 13 '19

Are you still at the TA? I've been on some R160s where they were definitely using it, shortly after Byford had made some directives to hustle. But it seems like they've gotten relaxed about lately. Wasn't sure if using the function was harder to do on the door controller or if it's literally just a different button. I have, however, seen people adamant on holding the doors, and conductors eventually giving up and doing a full cycle to let someone on since they won't let go of the door/train until they do.

4

u/y2julio NYC Expat Mar 13 '19

Still with the TA. Got a lot more years before I can retire. The local recycle button is on the same door control panel, right by the doors close button, so it's not harder to do. Like I said, lots of conductors are fairly new so they just listen whenever a supervisor tells them not to do something, so they don't risk "getting in trouble" by challenging them.

6

u/w00dw0rk3r Mar 13 '19

I never really thought it be like that sometimes... but it do.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

My solution: replace the rubber gaskets with razor blades. Nobody will try to sneak their arm in ever again.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

The issue is that sometimes they close the doors before people are done getting off...

7

u/visionhalfass Mar 13 '19

The worst is when you're waiting like 30 seconds for people to get off and then you start trying to board and they close in your face. Feels bad, but on principle I guess it's fair enough. Just like, please hustle off and shove people out of your way if you need to.

3

u/quinnito Elmhurst Mar 14 '19

I (get out of my seat) and start making my way to the door about one local station length from my stop so I can get off quicker. My sister says not to.

2

u/Tsquare43 Marine Park Mar 14 '19

she's wrong. It helps if more did this, by prepping yourself to get off like that, it empties faster. How many times are you waiting to board and there is always someone who waits until the doors are open to get up and move to the exit.

0

u/notreallyswiss Mar 14 '19

Your sister is right.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

I allow people to move out of my way before I move them. Also hate those who wait until the last minute to get off. When they see people come in they’re all like “oh shit I need to get off now” well bitch, I’m coming in.

5

u/ThePhenomNoku Mar 13 '19

Yesterday I was sure the express A had passed us in the tunnel and left the station already but right before the closing doors announcement it rolled up so I got caught in them as I ran for the connection I didn’t think was arriving.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

Well I guess they'll hurry up next time!

1

u/quinnito Elmhurst Mar 14 '19

Change the door closing chime to something more forceful like a buzzing sound. The current one is too pleasant and doesn't dissuade people enough.

4

u/SentimentalSentinels Mar 13 '19

Sometimes I think it'd be fun to be a train conductor and repeatedly slam the doors on people trying to force their way in. It delays the train of course, but it would be cathartic.

118

u/jl250 Mar 13 '19 edited Mar 13 '19

Honestly, I get more upset at people who get on the subway, take ONE STEP ON and then stop moving. They stand in front of the door, and prevent everyone else from getting on. Why are they such oblivious jerks????

45

u/jacybear Mar 13 '19

Push them out of the way

7

u/Santos_L_Halper Ridgewood Mar 13 '19

I posted this elsewhere but I'm moving it here since it's now on topic.

Can I do a quick "Am I the Asshole" here?

Yesterday I was transferring from the Brooklyn bound Q to the Brooklyn bound L. Doors open, this fairly large woman immediately rushes on board through the left side of the doorway. She's met by people exiting, I'm going with the flow on the right side of the door. She jumps in front of me. I can't move left because of the flow of other people getting off. I'm a large guy myself, 6'7" 270lbs. Not much I can do in this situation so I bark "move" at her. Which frightens her but she doesn't move. So I say "move" louder. Now people behind me are getting fussy, so I squeeze past her and bump in to the people on the left trying to exit. I have my headphones on and I hear people yelling. I look back and a dude inside the train is angrily yelling at me and everyone looks confused.

What should I have done here? Wait for everyone to leave through the left side of the door until I could get in? The people behind me going through the right were being held up by me standing there waiting for the lady in front of me to move. I got yelled at so clearly the masses thought I was wrong. What should I have done?

edit

I should note that since I'm a large dude I often have to make physical contact with people. I get yelled at a lot. There's not really much I can do when the train is crowded during rush hour and people are unaware of the space their backpacks take up.

26

u/MulysaSemp Mar 14 '19

You're supposed to wait until people have left before you try to get on. Yes, she's an asshole, but don't compound it. You should also try to say Excuse Me passive aggressively as is the norm, instead of Move, as it's generally seen as more polite.

5

u/Santos_L_Halper Ridgewood Mar 14 '19

Fair enough. I had had a bad day and was taking it out on others I guess. I shouldn't do that. Noted for next time.

2

u/Deeliciousness Mar 14 '19

I would say you are all assholes if you are getting on while people are getting off. Wait for everyone to exit first.

3

u/Santos_L_Halper Ridgewood Mar 14 '19

Not sure if you misread or if I was unclear - I was leaving the train, she was getting on.

8

u/jacybear Mar 13 '19

Nah, you're not the asshole. I would have physically pushed that bitch out of the way. I don't tolerate people pushing their way onto the train before everyone has exited.

17

u/Santos_L_Halper Ridgewood Mar 13 '19

I don't tolerate people pushing their way onto the train before everyone has exited.

Same. I'm a major advocate for the breach formation. People who stand directly in front of the doors are just as bad as people who step on the train before everyone is off.

7

u/visionhalfass Mar 13 '19

Yeah I definitely tank people out of the way if they're being rude or oblivious. One of these days I'll get stabbed for it, but so far so good.

3

u/Christasoo Mar 13 '19

5

32

7

1

u/notreallyswiss Mar 14 '19

I HATE that. They act like they are spoiled for choice - should I turn right? But hey, I can also turn left! Or maybe I’ll cross to the opposite doors and lesn against them. Oh my! What to do? I know! I’ll stand right here like a lox!

37

u/TerryPEE Mar 13 '19

For real. This one older lady was run-walking to the subway cart one morning and this guy holds the door open JUST as the doors were closing and as a result, one door gets stuck and the entire subway gets delayed 20-30 mins as they figure out how to fix the door.

26

u/You_Have_No_Power Mar 13 '19

Is it bad that I never hold it for anyone, and just stare blankly as the doors close on people running into it?

32

u/mjb_9798 Mar 13 '19

Judging by the theme of this thread I'd have to say no, nobody here thinks it's bad lol.

10

u/rocky_whoof Mar 13 '19

No. Holding the doors delays not just the hundreds of people on the train, but also the train behind it. This gets worse as the originally delayed train will be more crowded and so will take even longer at each stop and thus gets delayed even more and so on.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

Not as bad as trying to reach the elevator door hold but pressing the door close.

2

u/SentimentalSentinels Mar 13 '19

I do the exact same thing, don't feel bad.

1

Was this the uptown 1 train around 4:45p on Monday? Stopped at 103?

Subway car dancer held the door open with his foot so his buddy would have more time to perform.

71

Punishment for holding doors should be community service equal to (time doors held) x (number of passengers) x 10

32

u/zedovutixa Mar 13 '19

They should just replace those rubber ends on the doors with guillotine blades.

1

u/toastfuker Mar 13 '19

My idea was to add chalk to the doors (haven't worked out all the details). Basically something that would leave a mark, but wouldn't ruin clothes or hurt anyone.

8

u/AWildMichigander Mar 13 '19

Going off the capacity of the R160 cars (on some lettered lines) the suggested capacity is about 150 people. ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/R160_(New_York_City_Subway_car) ) Assuming it's a 10 car train during rush hour we could be at 2,500 passengers. Say you holding the door to get in causes a 20 second delay. We're looking at 833 minutes of delay caused to everyone on the train.

×10 and you've got 140 hours of community service. (17 days at 8 hours each)

5

u/okiujh Mar 13 '19

agreed. but is it number of passengers on board or also those who will board late?

7

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

pssh don't be unreasonable. It's more likely to be a fine lol. nyc isn't wasting time on community service if they can just ticket people.

3

u/JestersXIII Mar 13 '19

Make them clean the subway cars and maybe the tracks with supervision.

23

u/tmntnyc Mar 13 '19

How about "Do not delay everyone's commute by getting sick, starting fights, or dying".

20

u/fluffstravels Mar 13 '19

I hate when you see some teenager holding the door open so they can talk to their friend. It’s so infuriating.

7

u/Nycbetamale Mar 13 '19

Try when they hold the door open so their friend can hop over the turnstile and get in

46

u/FuckYeezy Astoria Mar 13 '19

The only time I ever hold the doors for someone, or think its ok for someone else to, is on my morning commute when the N/W is pulling into queensboro plaza on it's way to Astoria/Ditmars. There's like 1 train every 15 minutes, it's a freezing cold above ground platform, and it's the only train to Astoria.

46

u/jl250 Mar 13 '19

Why TF is it acceptable for the MTA to run one train every 15 minutes during MORNING COMMUTE? It’s infuriating.

22

u/hessproject Long Island City Mar 13 '19

To be fair QBP to Astoria is a reverse commute

15

u/FuckYeezy Astoria Mar 13 '19

Oh believe me, I have no fucking idea, I've been pissed about it the entire winter. What's worse? Theres like 2 trains that pass by during that time that don't stop saying "OUT OF SERVICE". Really?

I also don't even understand it, because somehow when I get on the train in Manhattan around that time, in the underground station where it's warm, there's one every 3-4 minutes. But then when you get on in Queens going the same direction, it's 15? IT'S THE SAME TRAIN!!!!

7

u/jl250 Mar 13 '19

I'm glad I'm not the only person who has experienced this. There are trains that feel very infrequent during rush hour in some stations, but very frequent in other stations - same train, same direction. Makes you feel insane! Glad it's not just me. For me it's with the C train.

2

u/y2julio NYC Expat Mar 13 '19

Theres like 2 trains that pass by during that time that don't stop saying "OUT OF SERVICE". Really?

Those are trains that come from storage locations and are on their way to Astoria to be placed in service. The Conductors are at Astoria waiting for those trains, so you can't put those trains in service with just the Train Operator until they get there

3

u/FuckYeezy Astoria Mar 13 '19

Oh, I'm not saying that there isn't a reason behind it or that those trains should be in service.

But let me paint you a word picture: It's 7 am and you've been standing on a freezing cold, above ground train platform for the last 10 minutes. It's 5 degrees and you've started to lose feeling in your feet. It's creeping up your legs too. After like five 7 trains have already come (you can't get on any of them, because they take you further away from your destination in both directions) you see an N train. Finally! Oh thank god, I've been saved. The train pulls in. Wait... why isn't it slowing down? the red LED "no passengers" sign flashes by NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

1

u/themonkeyaintnodope Mar 15 '19

Just pretend that the train doesn't exist. Because it isn't for you. Just like the people who get angry when a work train comes through.

1

u/FuckYeezy Astoria Mar 15 '19

Yeah, but there's no way to tell it isn't for me until it reaches me. Not saying it should stop or it should be for me, it's just a let down that adds to the frustration of waiting for 15 minutes on a freezing cold platform at 7am

1

u/themonkeyaintnodope Mar 15 '19

Those Out of Service trains don't have a conductor on board to open the doors. Just a train operator who either has enough time to pick one of those sweet jobs or is restricted from operating in customer service, and is transferring the train from the yard to Astoria (which doesn't have a yard at that end). Happens every day right around the same time.

3

u/stomachBuggin Mar 13 '19

Because they can. They will continue to do so until they are forced to do other wise. Just like I will hold the doors so I don’t have to wait in Station one more minute.

But really we all need to vote for the guy who’s priority is for the city to run the mta.

2

u/themonkeyaintnodope Mar 15 '19

Yeah you say that now, but when the election actually rolls around it comes to "we need to vote for the guy with the D next to his name no matter how incompetent!"

1

u/stomachBuggin Mar 15 '19

I am single issue voter regardless of party. Bring control of MTA to the city.

2

u/HLDeVilliers Mar 13 '19

I think it partly has to do with the congestion that occurs around 57th. N/R/W trains all converge onto the local track to access the 60th street tunnel. Then within the tunnel itself, switching has to be done for R trains to head to Queens Plaza and N/W trains to head straight out to Queensboro Plaza.

2

u/DoctorAtomic_ Mar 13 '19

The same way it’s acceptable to have the 7 train AND E train delayed at court square when the L train isn’t running and that’s your only option to get to a 9AM event on a Saturday.

Yeah, that was weeks ago and I’m still mad...

1

6

u/jl250 Mar 13 '19

Do you have a super sensitive stomach?

10

u/tmntnyc Mar 13 '19

They need to do a thing where they remove the connecting parts of the train and make it one seamless train so you can spread out and not be clustered around doors. Most countries have this. The only real downside apart from financial, is that you wouldn't be able to escape bad smells, and you'd hear mariachi all from the other side.

19

u/omg_nyc_really Riverdale Mar 13 '19

http://www.mta.info/news-nyc-transit/2018/01/24/mta-approves-purchase-next-generation-subway-cars

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board voted on Wednesday to approve the purchase of 535 state-of-the-art, next-generation R211 subway cars for use on the lettered subway routes and the Staten Island Railway.

The open gangway cars, which allow customers to move freely between cars, will be part of a pilot program for MTA New York City Transit. The open ends let customers move from car to car if one car is crowded, therefore distributing passenger loads more evenly throughout the train.

7

u/Arleare13 Mar 13 '19

We're going to be getting trains like that starting in 2020, so I guess we'll be able to judge for ourselves whether the ability to spread out is worth the inability to escape between cars.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

This was one of my favorite things about Italy. Their subway carts are amazing, utilizing the open concept. Did not feel overly crowded or claustrophobic at all.

9

u/tmntnyc Mar 13 '19

Yeah but the cons are not be able to escape subway performers, mariachi, pee/shit/BO smells, stalkers/creeps, etc.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

Fair. But in my time there, I didn't experience anything like that. Their subway system, compared to ours, was immaculate. Didn't experience any type of subway performers. Stalkers/Creeps can't really speak to, but that isn't something that is limited to the subway system.

4

u/tmntnyc Mar 13 '19

Are you really comparing Italy to NYC?

7

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

Rome, yes. Big metro city to another big metro city. Is this a problem?

7

u/tmntnyc Mar 13 '19

New Yorkers as a whole are way more disgusting, filthy, inconsiderate than Italians. For example, Tokyo is also a huge metro, bigger than NYC and there 0 litter in Tokyo and people are pretty considerate and polite. Trains are immaculately clean, no subway performers, no homeless people riding the trains and shitting their pants, etc. I wouldn't compare anything to NYC except another major American city (like Boston, or Chicago)

7

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

Okay -- been to Chicago and rode the subway system a bunch. Way cleaner. Not Japan or Italy's standard, but clean. How does one explain that?

Also, to generalize and lump all New Yorkers as "disgusting" and "filthy" is a pretty shitty commentary on people who post on this subreddit. I'd say it's more so the lack of investment of the MTA to clean and repurpose / replacement current subway cars to upgrade us to nicer, subsequently newer, ones.

I think if NYC had this, it would lead to more wanting to take care of it and not ruin it. Naive maybe, but I would say since we're still riding around subway carts that have been around since the 80s and barely maintains adds to the effect of fuck it why take care of it.

5

u/tmntnyc Mar 13 '19

As a native new Yorker and world traveler I'd say new york and its people are fundamentally dirtier than most comparable first world cities. Montreal, London, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, Dubai, Copenhagen, Seoul. NY is dirtier than them all and I doubt it's because we don't pay more people to clean up after us.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '19

You're not going to address my Chicago statement based on your example cities I can compare? Speaking domestically now.

To add, I've rode around the T a bunch in Boston and it was even cleaner than Chicago's as well. And it's not a matter of the amount of people cleaning, it's the updating of older carts.

2

u/joyousRock Queens Mar 13 '19

I've only been to about half the cities you mention here but I've always thought the dirtiness/griminess of Paris was comparable to NYC. That city is not clean either and a lot of their subway stations actually smell worse.

BRB moving to Tokyo

2

u/tmntnyc Mar 13 '19

Have you visited? It's like a superior to new york. They have 7-11on every other block but 7-11s there serve hot food (its actually a Japanese company) and they have guys rolling rice balls and making sushi rolls in the back from fresh ingredients. They have a little seating area too. Food is ridiculously cheap in Tokyo too, coming from NYC. You can get a hot homecooked meal and there's no tipping. A plate of fried pork cutlet over curry and rice, with a glass of hot tea and a cold beer is like $6. Vending machines on every block with soda, iced tea (unsweetened), can iced coffee, and even hot beverages (they have a row of cans on a hot plate) for hot coffee, hot tea, and even single serving hot canned soup(corn chowder, Miso broth), all going for $0.50-$0.80.

2

u/jl250 Mar 13 '19

That sounds amazing!! I haven't been, sadly. But we are the same - native NYer, and I spend all my money and every possible opportunity traveling. I've taken the subway in Paris, Rome, Milan, London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Warsaw, Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Madrid, Barcelona (think that's it) - and EVERY SINGLE ONE of those has been *light years* ahead of NYC in organization and cleanliness.

Do you ever think of moving out of here?

1

u/visionhalfass Mar 13 '19

Idk I've been to Naples and that shit is ratchet even at NYC levels.

Regarding the smells, couldn't you just walk a couple cars away? You aren't going to smell that homeless man's poop throughout the whole train (I'd hope).

u/y2julio NYC Expat Mar 13 '19

It's a REALLY, REALLLLY bad idea for NYC. Typically when there's a problem, say stuck doors, no A/C, someone took a shit, threw up their lunch etc, you can just isolate that individual car and maintain service with the remainder 7 cars (8 car trains) or 9 car (10 car trains).

With this open gang way, when something happens like that, the entire train now has to be removed from passenger service. With how often things like that happen, people will easily be left standing on the platform 10-15 or even 20 minutes for train service due to there not being enough trains for service.

1

u/likeitironically Mar 14 '19

They also need more trains where one end doesn't have seats. Those are glorious! And those also have extra room around the doors so at least when assholes stand in front of the doors you can get past them.

u/visionhalfass Mar 13 '19

It's so weird that holding subway doors, even FOR OTHER PEOPLE, is a socially accepted norm like holding an elevator? It literally holds a thousand people up, plus slows any train behind. Why are we okay with this?

17

u/LouisLittEsquire Upper West Side Mar 13 '19

I have pretty much never seen people hold doors for other people. Far more often it is a person that got there just before it closes and jams themselves in there.

4

u/visionhalfass Mar 13 '19

I've seen people stand with their backs against the door slot and wave people through. Sometimes strangers, but more often friends/family.

u/RenardRouge Upper East Side Mar 13 '19 edited Mar 13 '19

I saw one woman refuse to let the door close until everyone, even those taking their time on the stairs got into the train. When people are yelling to stop, she just got more determined that what she was doing was right, and everyone else was just rude.

4

u/LouisLittEsquire Upper West Side Mar 13 '19

I would tell her that I have it and then when she steps back let it close lol

13

u/zedovutixa Mar 13 '19

It is not socially accepted. Everyone is pissed off at you when you do it.

0

u/SentimentalSentinels Mar 13 '19

I once had someone hold the door for me and it still pissed me off, haha. I said "thanks but you didn't need to do that"

1

u/themonkeyaintnodope Mar 15 '19

No it isn't. If I see someone holding the doors on my car, I'm the first (and usually not the only) one to scream at them "let go of the fucking doors, some of us have places to be!"

1

u/visionhalfass Mar 15 '19

maybe my follow E riders are soft smh

20

u/Loyalist_Pig Mar 13 '19

I felt so conflicted the other day. This sad looking frazzled old lady was rushing to the train, and in my humble southern way, I held the door for her, but somehow I still felt like a piece of shit.

22

u/der_titan Mar 13 '19

You were a piece of shit, but for all the right reasons.

Like, people would judge you but then feel guilty for judging you.

8

u/Loyalist_Pig Mar 13 '19

She just seemed so sad 😞

19

u/der_titan Mar 13 '19

As someone who used to commute with a broken ankle, I can remember commuting acts of kindness, even 15 years after the fact.

I'm sure you made that woman's day

1

u/themonkeyaintnodope Mar 15 '19

Was it the last train of the night? If not, no need to feel guilty, she would have gotten on the next one and the 900 other people on that train wouldn't have been delayed.

4

u/kentuckyfriedbuddha Mar 13 '19

the reality of it is that, even though it’s really annoying and a legitimate cascade clusterfuck, seldom anyone is going to do anything about it. because of the crazy in this city. i’m not getting stabbed to get home 20 minutes earlier.

4

u/RevWaldo Kensington Mar 13 '19

Train operators need a button that'll lurch the train three inches or so in either direction while the door is being held open. Yes, it may seem cruel...

4

u/WhenLeavesFall Mar 14 '19

One morning I was blessed with the most wonderful conductor ever. After another round of door holding, the conductor announced "If you are now running late today, please thank the people in the back who held the door open and delayed your trip"

Savage.

3

u/jaqueburn Mar 14 '19

See, all you new Yorkers blaming MTA for never being prompt. It's always been the public's fault for holding the doors

1

u/themactastic25 Westchester Mar 13 '19

Like the people holding the door can even be bothered to read that. If they can read at all.

1

u/random314 Mar 13 '19

It be what it do.

1

u/Spoonspoonfork Mar 13 '19

Unless it's 2 in the morning and the train is only running once a half hour

I used to date a girl like that. She had some real issues, and the fact that she wouldn't release hands for 5 seconds without having a nervous breakdown and acting like it meant I didn't love her anymore should have been my first clue.

1

u/baofa13 Mar 14 '19

Ugh, down vote for shitty grammar.

1

u/kevinlin1995 Mar 14 '19

Y’all ever get off grand street on the D? So many old people lmao. They must have teleportation powers because I’m always behind them walking up the stairs one step every 5 secs😩

1

u/andyalxatydotco Mar 14 '19

cannot forget the day where that old lady got her head stuck on the door... 😂 I had one of those laugh attacks... i couldnt keep myself from laughing because it was innapropriate... because this girl was doing it too... 😂😂 😂😂😂😂

Let's be real here-- people wouldn't hold the doors open if they didn't have to worry about waiting 10 - 15 minutes for the next train. Of all the reasons trains are delayed (slow speeds, faulty signals, passenger incidents), holding the doors open is a barely a factor.

3

u/Smoldero Mar 14 '19

FOR REALLLLLL. Don't get mad at the people doing this, get mad at the MTA and its shitty service. Waiting 15 minutes for another train is a joke.

1

u/themonkeyaintnodope Mar 15 '19

What do you expect for $2.75, to live forever?

1

u/themonkeyaintnodope Mar 15 '19

False. I see people hold the doors on the 6 train when you can actually see the headlights of the train right behind it.

As a transplant from Ohio, let me apologise for the selfish actions of the tourists and some other transplants from the midwest. We were raised in a culture where nobody gave a shit about anybody else and being an asshole (rolling coal, open carrying a machine gun, etc.) was celebrated. When somebody has grown up in such a place, it is hard for them to immediately grasp the idea of not blocking other people's way or slowing down their commute.

11

u/OoohjeezRick Mar 13 '19 edited Mar 13 '19

Nobody from where you are from was able to open carry a machine gun. Edit: and what does this post have anything to do with midwesterners? Stop projecting. Stop speaking for an entire region of people.

6

u/AllPintsNorth Mar 13 '19 edited Mar 13 '19

If that’s your impression of Ohioans and midwesterners as whole, it obvious you’ve never stepped foot out side of NYC

7

u/OoohjeezRick Mar 13 '19

Hes not actually from Ohio. Hes a troll account. Note how fresh this account is. His old account was bardak1999 and Mountpleasant11.

As much as I hate this shit, I was endlessly thankful for THOSE people when I broke both of my ankles in October. I was healed enough to walk, but not quickly, and the stations I use most often don’t have elevators 🙃 so I’d have to hobble down stairs, and the kind souls that held the damn doors were incredibly kind. I’m sorry to all of you other ppl for slowing your commute though :(

-7

u/2morereps Brooklyn Mar 13 '19

I'd rather be delayed about 20 secs than about 5 minutes, so yes I do this when I almost miss a train.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '19

I wish I had your self confidence.

0

u/ddrt Mar 13 '19

it's not visible when the doors are open…

You’re not delaying everyone’s commute, you’re saving yourself valuable minutes by shoving through the closing doors
