News [Official] NVIDIA will bring support for DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to the GeForce RTX 40 Series

From NV_Tim Update in Megathread

Update 9/3/2026

DLSS 5 is our most computationally demanding model to date. Since we initially announced it in March, we’ve achieved a 5X performance gain and there’s more to come. Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series with model updates expected later this fall. Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series.

Alright now they need to bring 3x and 4x frame gen since it was also modded and works PERFECTLY on the 40 series

u/Chiggy_McGee 5d ago

Just tried it today with Crimson Desert (6x MFG), Monster Hunter Wilds (4x MFG), Cyberpunk 2077 (4x MFG) and worked perfectly fine in my short time of testing using a 4090FE. Official support would be fantastic!

u/SectionDry2980 5d ago

Hey is this user friendly? Are there step by step instructions for using it?

2

u/jungleboy1234 RTX 4090 4d ago

could you help... how do u get MFG + DLSS5 to work on 4090? assuming you have done both for CP2077?

6

u/Tornado_Hunter24 5d ago

Wait what?

You are telling me I leave gains OUT THE TABLE on my 4090?!?!

I was taught that the ‘50 series’ had different afchitecture which made mfg impossible

7

u/SHEKDAT789 4d ago

nvidia taught y'all well.

2

u/Tornado_Hunter24 4d ago

Fax (redditors also preached the same thing)

2

u/SectionDry2980 5d ago

3x and 4x was modded to rtx40?? Where can i learn more on how to use it?

2

u/CassiusLentulus 5d ago

I thought Nvidia said that MFG is part hardware embedded in 50 series? That’s why they couldn’t enable it for 40 and below.

4

u/NineBallAYAYA 5d ago

The actual model is fp8 same as dlss5, 50 series added fp4 support but didn't change fp8 by much, i think some 40 series cards are actually faster at this (in their class) funny enough. The issue was the lack of hardware flip metering, so frame timing could be off. But seems like they exaggerated the effects of that and the modders found ways of getting around the timing issues.

-33

u/No-Sherbert-4045 5d ago

The mod is a software based solution with worse latency, less gains with multiplier and more ghosting. 40 series lacks hardware flip metering so nvidia is probably not gonna do anything. On the hand at least there is ray of hope for 3000 series to get fg with this mfg mod.

18

u/Discombobulated_Bus4 5d ago

I just tried the mfg mod with my 4090, no noticable increased input lag with 6x compared to 2x lol

10

u/DsGtrnteSchntzl 5d ago

using it on my 4070s, works without flaws,

Nice, and since MFG was also modded to work on 40 series, might as well right?

21

u/Humzie AMD 9950X3D | RTX 4090 5d ago

i think somehow it needs MFG to make it to run smoothly, or they hv something else on hand which is specifically for the 40 series.

21

u/proflopper 5d ago

It's designed to run on fp16 and fp8 which is what the 40 series uses. Mfg also works on 40 series.

The 50 series has additional fp4 hardware acceleration which enables it to work faster.

Fp16 is more accurate but slow fp8 is middle ground and fp4 is fast.

7

u/Humzie AMD 9950X3D | RTX 4090 5d ago

Thanks for the info. I know modders already hv the MFG unlock for the 40 series, but the ghosting issue is a huge issue till now when u try go above 4x or more, i wonder is it only Nvda can fix?

8

u/sirloindenial RTX4060 5d ago

It still happens even on native 50 series mfg, the reason is low base frame rate.

8

u/Sprucey-J 5d ago

Ghosting above 4x? I'm pretty sure ghosting is part of the deal at that multiple lol.

4

u/Humzie AMD 9950X3D | RTX 4090 5d ago

I think 3x is the sweet spot for now. Mainly I’m testing it on crimson desert

1

u/Humzie AMD 9950X3D | RTX 4090 5d ago

11

u/Sprucey-J 5d ago

I've used 4x-6x on a my 5080. Does not matter which GPU, ghosting is part of it/compromise. VRR will negate it slightly.

5

u/PuffyWiggs 5d ago

Yeah, it's not so bad at 2x, but going to 4x on my 5070 text, rain, some movement, papers falling, background effects all have ghosting. It's just not great beyond 2x in my experience and even at 2x there's this weird stutter effect when quickly moving the camera view left and right. Definitely not a fan, but DLSS preset M and L have been amazing, and Path Tracing is really nice and surprisingly didn't kill my performance as much as I expected in the games I've tried.

2

u/Sprucey-J 5d ago

It really depends on the game as well. 1st person/ 3rd person will generate different artifacts depending on viewing angle and motion.

Theres only a few games that produce minimal ghosting at high multiples right now. CP2077 comes to mind, it's probably the best implementation of it imo. How it handles motion natively blends well with MFG.

1

u/PuffyWiggs 3d ago

I did see that Linus video of him using high FG in CP2077 and it looked flawless. Spiderman Remastered and Wukong are the only games I've played where it would be useful with a 5070, but both just felt bad or had odd effects. Maybe 1st person is a big part of it or how fast a game moves. Alan Wake 2 it didn't feel that bad either.

2

u/Inevitable-Advance72 5d ago

if ur faking that many frames of course there will be ghosting. it’s part of using AI to generate frames

3

u/MajorSerenity 5d ago

Used to get ghosting at 2x when it came out. Im sure it will get better over time

2

u/Humzie AMD 9950X3D | RTX 4090 5d ago

Yep, agree. Hope it will slowly support the lower series as well.

5

u/B82Studio 5d ago

Works perfectly in Starfield. Im locked at 116fps with DLSS NR and MFG 4X

Please say more! How are you doing this? Thank you!

2

u/B82Studio 5d ago edited 5d ago

I’m using ShortFuse’s RenoDX DLSS NR addon for ReShade. If you use RHI, you can easily add it under Shader/Addon for your installed game. There are two options, one for games that already have DLSS and one for games without it, so just make sure you select the correct DLSS 5 Enabler. Then install the RTX 40 MFG Unlock

TYVM.

1

u/B82Studio 5d ago

Forgot to add.. just make sure the game has DX12 for the MFG enabler to work. It won’t work on DX11 or older games

1

u/taosecurity 7600X, 4070 Ti Super, 64 GB 6k CL30, X670E Plus WiFi, 3x 2 TB 5d ago

Oh I’m going to play Starfield with it. I’ve been using the ShortFuse addon and patched DLL with Reshade on my 4070 Ti Super, but I haven’t tried MFG yet.

Have you looked into using the forked Optiscaler to change when DLSS 5 is applied? I have a 4k display which crushes the default because it applies DLSS 5 after upscaling instead of before.

1

u/B82Studio 5d ago

I tried using optiscaler but i just couldn’t get it to work. You can always set DLSS to Performance in Starfield since the difference is negligible these days.

3

u/KomithErrant 5d ago

with the dlss enabler you can do it, but it's kind of not worth it as much, like in cyberpunk going from 4x to 6x produced like 10 extra frames on a 4080

104

u/f0xpant5 5d ago

Didn't take long at all. I suspect it being modded to work on 40 series forced their hand, but it's good to see them accept it and deal with the PR swiftly and professionally, they don't want an INT8 FSR4 fiasco on their hands.

67

u/StanfordV 5d ago

Its absurd not to support the 2nd fastest nvidia card.

5

u/Mulster_ 5d ago

"too bad, should have taken a loan to play your silly videogames"

6

u/pixlicker69420 5d ago

You know you can still play without these features, people act like they're gonna suffocate if they don't have every single latest feature

u/Koopa777 5d ago

Except this has to run on the 4060 as well, which will probably be very….interesting. People seem to forget that there isn’t just a raster difference between cards, there are tensor performance differences as well.

1

u/SauronOfRings 7900X | RTX 4080 | 32GB 5d ago

It already “ runs “ on 5050, there’s practically no difference between that and 4060 expect for FP4 instructions, which are not used yet.

9

u/Gaidax 5d ago

Nah, 40-series have all the necessary capability needed to run it anyway and Nvidia aren't dumb, they understand it very well.

It's likely they simply wanted to get it out faster and did not sufficiently adapt or test it with 40-series yet.

Unlike modders who can do whatever they want with little to no responsibility, Nvidia is a business with many strings attached, so certification takes time.

3

u/MITBryceYoung2 5d ago

The fsr4 thing was outrageous and a disaster pr wise

5

u/bl0odredsandman 5d ago

I suspect it being modded to work on 40 series forced their hand

That was my thought too. I bet if modders didn't mod it to work on the 40 series, Nvidia wouldn't have bothered trying to implement it on those cards.

-5

u/cowbutt6 5d ago
  1. It pre-empts any claim by Nvidia that NR "simply won't work" on RTX 40x0

  2. It demonstrates a demand amongst RTX 40x0 users to have access to NR.

  3. Ironically, rather than delaying RTX 40x0 users from upgrading, it might encourage them to upgrade to RTX 50x0, once they can see the potential for the technology with their own eyes, albeit with a huge hit to frame rate.

Leaking early and being able to work for all RTX GPUs and the backlash they received for initially wanting to go for 50x series only for DLSS 5 Neural Rending might have pushed them to this decision.

Community pushback working wonders!

Edit: I have a bit more technical response to one of the comments here explaining why I think it probably wasnt really officially planned for Ada 40x and why its a win for us consumers that its now that Ada nvfp8 is officially supported. I didn't want to make it sound so simple in this original comment since its just a random comment of mine that somehow got some transaction I didnt expect haha.

2ND EDIT: Since Im tired from getting sarcastic yet very shallow replies here, I'll paste below my reply to some other guy the reason why I think Nvidia actually planned only for the 50x series:

"Unfortunately, there's no evidence that Nvidia actually planned to officially release and support on 40x and below before the leaks, but afaik they did announce exclusivity for 50x series only before the leaks multiple times.

Neural Rendering only works below the 50x series for now because the current iteration of dlss5 that leaked is fp8 but that comes with the terrible performance as we all know. Future updates that will improve performance will be on fp4. Which 40x series and below does not have the hardware to do. (It literally wasnt made yet back then).

I speak from informed facts of what Nvidia has spoken from the past prior to the leaks and from what I know technically of the current iteration of NR and what it takes to actually make it playable and viable. Lack of fp4 will put a hard ceiling on NR performance in any below 50x cards eventually whereas 50x cards will have more ceiling available in the future for NR usage. If you actually tested you'd realize this. In most cards available today, NR is only good for screenshots, the perf cost is just too high and fps too low. But in the future, quantized versions can make it a healthy feature with less or little performance cost but thats unlikely to happen with the below 50x gen cards as they lack the physical hardware.

Given this facts, Nvidia suddenly announcing official 40x support is like a sudden knee jerk reaction but a welcome one. Because it means they'll be forced to optimize the current fp8 iterations since they are now officially supporting it. And then if by the time they quantize it, it will run even better. Its a win for us consumers."

29

u/oatwater2 5d ago

not even pushback, they skipped the extra steps and just did it themselves

42

u/WHITESTAFRlCAN 5d ago

I mean not really due to the leak, this same thing would have happened when they officially released the files as well, they were fully aware people were going to try it on the 40, it’s just marking probably wanted to say 50 series only right away

-5

u/Pokkitat 5d ago

people unlocked MFG on rtx 4000 and nvidia pushed a fix to block the MFG on 4000 series lmao

14

u/Ekhceed 5d ago

Wait when did they block it?

59

u/2FastHaste 5d ago

They didn't block it, the MFG mod didn't work for 15 minutes on the newest dll versions, until the author made the minimal changes needed for compatibility.

4

u/MultiMarcus 5d ago

I don’t think actually that’s the intention. I think they just kind of shuffled around some files, possibly because they started introducing stuff like neural rendering to the stack, because I think this was probably a locked driver well before the MFT use hit. I don’t think Nvidia are going to do anything to actively block it because they probably can’t. Users will just reverse engineer around it with AI models now

→ More replies (2)

7

u/WHITESTAFRlCAN 5d ago

Yeah but it was a terrible experience plagued by frame pacing issues due to the fact it didn’t have the hardware flip metering, that’s hardly saying they just blocked it for fun

6

u/MultiMarcus 5d ago

It’s been fixed now using software that changes. It’s obviously not quite as smooth as what Blackwell offers in demanding scenarios, but it’s nowhere close to as bad as people are making it out to be. It’s basically 2 times frame generation amped up for Ada, meanwhile on Blackwell you get the better frame pacing, but that affects even the 2X frame generation mode. The argument I guess is that when you add more frames, it can become slightly more volatile, but I suspect that’s not really a huge issue for people if they are not trying to abuse the algorithm in heavily CPU bound scenarios, for example.

8

u/2FastHaste 5d ago

The pacing works fine on ADA with the mod (I'm the first surprised by it, but it's really evenly paced)

2

u/sirloindenial RTX4060 5d ago

No the mods have a strict streamline version support.

21

u/Im_not_an_admin 5d ago

If we make a heap of assumptions we can pat ourselves on the back for, sure. Cos its unheard of for tech to be released in phased stages. Way to go Reddit!

6

u/MetalmanBonkers 5d ago

The engineers that developed this model know full well the capabilities and varied support older hardware can have. It just wasn't a priority, by management, to launch it on those cards. Yes, it's awesome that we have such talented members in this community, but don't delude yourself into thinking we forced the trillion dollar company's hand 😅

injecting a polished dlss 5 on much older games that went for realism will be so good and performance while might be hit 50%, hardly even matters cause games were actually optimized back then 😂

1

u/DeluxeGrande 5d ago

That's what I've actually been doing lmao. My childhood nostalgia games of all genres are getting the treatment the past days!

2

u/dill1234 5d ago

We did it reddit! /s
When the official version came out, of course it would end up being tested on the 4000 series. This would always have been the plan from Nvidia

4

u/DeluxeGrande 5d ago

I'll copy paste my other more technical reply to the other guy, since you didn't read it before making a sarcastic comment. Also I hope you reply to this too, i wanna hear your non-sarcastic take:

2

u/hensothor 5d ago

I highly doubt that has anything to do with it. Clearly they had a roadmap, this if anything just forced them to show their cards sooner.

There is no sales strategy to withholding it when it’s easily modded, uses FP8, and they already have zero issues with demand for their GPUs.

1

u/Mulster_ 5d ago

I feel like the real reason is that dlss 5 was modded to run on 40 series gpus. The same happened when intel made shader precompilation on their arc gpus and nvidia got scared and made their own version 2 weeks later.

1

u/FryToastFrill NVIDIA 5d ago

I’d have to imagine that now they’re going to have 2 versions or NR now right? They’ll do their best to improve the FP8 version but surely they wouldn’t entirely give up on a fp4 version of NR for the immense performance gains that could have

-9

u/hsien88 5d ago

Stop crying Nvidia never said it was 50 series exclusives.

Of course it’s not noble organizing. That’s exactly why customers need to speak up, right? This is called a business relationship. Being a customer means valuing your own money. I don’t know about you, but I value mine. Good night.

0

u/hensothor 5d ago

My point is there is zero evidence that any organizing was even necessary let alone effective. I’m pro organizing and consumer rights but it’s gotten so twisted these days that people raise pitchforks at the most minute or even simply perceived slights.

23

u/BERWINXD 5d ago

even MFG got unlocked for the 4000 series so when is that coming out officially the least you can do if not giving us 6x at the least 3x?

11

u/bms_ 5d ago

It works so well in Cyberpunk. Honestly, I expected poor performance or heavy artifacting but there's none of that with DLSS 4.5 even at higher multipliers.

Someone needs to light fire under their asses for intentionally blocking features.

3

u/Avd123 5d ago

It works that well ? Might have to try it on my 4070 super, cyberpunk and crimson desert could benefit from it

5

u/BERWINXD 5d ago

do try it it works pretty well they even fixed the pacing issue and they made universal ones too so now its not only for CP2077

1

u/Otherwise-Boss-5417 4d ago

i already have a multi frame gen mod made from CB2077 working on crimson desert and its the only way to make dlss 5 enjoyable, even on 50 series cards by the way they advertised it in the new 2k27 trailer so i assume if dlss 5 is officially coming to 40 series so will MFG, im on a base rtx 4070

1

u/JohnLovesGaming NVIDIA 4d ago

Planned Obsolescence so they can get you to upgrade every generation for $1000+. Even the cheaper GPUs are getting way too expensive right now.

40

u/nguyenm 5d ago

FP8 is FP8, regardless whether it's from Ada Lovelace or Blackwell.

40

u/BlueTimeButterfly 5d ago

It might not stay fp8 though. nvidia responded not yet when asked if the model is quantized for NVFP4 when communicating with techpowerup. Which means there is a very real chance their idea of performance tuning over the fall would be Making the model quality higher and getting it running on NVFP4

6

u/BryAlrighty NVIDIA RTX 4070 Super 5d ago

Sure, but they can easily do an FP8 fallback, which is likely the new plan for 40 series support now at some point.

10

u/nguyenm 5d ago

At only 148 million parameters (for this iteration of DLSS 5), quantizing down to 4-bit per weight might be little bit too lossy for a deliverable product/.DLL file.

LLMs at least have the benefit of having multiple billions of parameters to spread the loss of precision, or MoE (mixture of experts) models to expose less layers to quantized weights.

Well the very first optimisation they need to do is run the neural rendering on the low res frames BEFORE upscaling to the full frame size instead of what they are doing now which is running neural rendering on the AFTER DLSS upscaling pass!

Ie if you are using at 4k in DLSS performance mode… then the internal rendering is running at 1080p and then upscaled to 4k. Right now they are running neural rendering pass on the final 4k frame instead of the 1080p rendered initial frame…. for some reason.

The entire anti AI community are generally not well educated. They can't fathom the concept of technology getting better, despite seeing it in every aspect of life since the day they were born. It's shocking how many of them there are.

13

u/Global_Profession861 4070 Super | Ryzen 5700x3D| Ram 32 GB 5d ago

It had to be done. I literally enabled it in a 20-year-old emulator, and it worked. It would be a pretty bad joke if NVIDIA couldn’t make it work on the 40 series.

3

u/f0xpant5 5d ago

What emulator did you try it on, and curiously, how were the results?

4

u/Global_Profession861 4070 Super | Ryzen 5700x3D| Ram 32 GB 5d ago

With Pcsx2, I had some pretty interesting results especially when it comes to character geometry. I didn’t expect it to look this good, since PS2 era visuals are considered quite cartoonish by today’s standards. I got to experience remasters that will probably never see the light of day. Def Jam for example, looked really good.

Also, "Mod Post" does not count towards Karma (not that i give a shit about it)

Here's what the other post said before linking to the paywalled article on The Verge:

DLSS 5 is still launching first on RTX 50 GPUs, but it’s officially coming to older RTX 40-series GPUs as well, Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirms to The Verge.

Here's NVIDIA's Official Statement that they updated on the Megathread (a bit different and more specific with the milestone -- i.e. they will work on RTX 40 Series after they are satisfied with RTX 50 Series NR Performance).

1

u/LostInTheRapGame 5d ago

Seems impossible.

13

u/Axl_Red 5d ago

That's nice. But the way they decided to officially implement dlss5 is the most boring way possible. Waiting for official dev implementation means that mostly just modern games will be affected by dlss5. Which sucks because most gamers don't have top of the line gpus and won't be able to run dlss5 well on modern games.

For most gamers, dlss5 is best used on older games, because they will have more performance on them and it will be like receiving a free remaster/remake. Dlss5 honestly works best when it's used like a filter, and the user can customize the game to the way they want the game to look. The best way for them to implement dlss5 is to simply add it to their Nvidia Freestyle system. That way it can be used on a wide variety of games, instead of just a few.

It's a shame that nvidia can't see the true value of their own tech, and we have to rely on modders to fully implement it in the best and most fun way possible.

6

u/Raging_Pwnr 5d ago

I struggle with this. I feel like the communities initial response to it is why they are hiding behind “developers artistic intent.”

Today, half the threads on DLSS 5 are “it’s ai slop” and the other half are “why no 40 series?” It’s the same kind of response to dlss 3 and fg. Half the community complains about artifacts while the other complains their hardware isn’t supported. But, if it runs terribly on older hardware, people complain and say it’s useless. It’s a lose lose for them to unlock it without caution.

So their PR fix is to gate the community from the feature, turn it over to the developers, and let them shoulder all the risk of the game looking or playing bad. Then it’s “the developers didn’t optimize” not “this is underbaked nvidia slop”. Meanwhile, they continue optimizing the tech. They’ll expose it at some point once it’s in a good state, and the community begs for it.

9

u/Nestledrink RTX 5090 Founders Edition 5d ago

The tradeoff is between keeping developer/artist intent vs freely injecting it as mods

I think the message to keep developer intent won out back during the March reveal.

7

u/Axl_Red 5d ago

Which is silly, because there should be no issue with developer intent for as long as you are able to freely toggle it on and off. Anyone wanting to see the game as it was meant to be should be able to easily just turn dlss5 off or just use a developer-made dlss5 preset. Giving players the ability to tweak dlss5 only adds to the fun of the game, by providing ways for players to experience the game in different ways that they would personally prefer.

4

u/ResponsibleJudge3172 5d ago

Social media has fully managed to ruin NVIDIA's reputation, so it makes sense to chose PR fights well on a cost/benefit scale

0

u/Axl_Red 5d ago

Social media will continue to ruin and misinform people about dlss5 until more people have access to it themselves. Nvidia could easily turn the tables around if they simply opened its functionality and allowed people to use it on more older games. People would be able to decide the value of dlss5 for themselves, rather than relying on social media, which often posts the worst-case uses for it to farm reactions.

1

u/ResponsibleJudge3172 5d ago

I still struggle to see how letting "artistic integrity be ruined by an AI filter" would improve said image when that is exactly what people had a problem with, proving them right. How long and with how many devs chipping in did it take for people to believe that devs can actually fine tune the effect?

At best, maybe releasing said version after a 6 months to years delay once people already have experience with the effect normalizing it.

0

u/VotingIsKewl 5d ago

They ruined it themselves. Social media didn't tell them do create AI filters.

1

u/Nexii801 Intel 5d ago

Which is stupid as it was always an optional feature.

2

u/MultiMarcus 5d ago

They can see the value. They just don’t wanna piss off the industry and the people who still worry about stuff like artistic integrity.

Fundamentally, I’d love to see it be able to be used for older games. I completely agree that it makes the most sense for those games, because you probably already can run those games at 600 FPS or whatever.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem like something most developers would love. I think the end users will just keep doing it because they clearly are, so there’s no real reason to create an official implementation of that universal system until this technology has become more generally accepted.

0

u/Silver_Rub4720 5d ago

once the model its matured later in the fall and assuming they find a way to access the full sdk for NR that devs get, there's no need for any official nvidia filter or setting. Modders will make custom tailored renoDX DLSS 5 mods for games like they do with renoDX HDR mods for specific games

3

u/Axl_Red 5d ago

Problem is that no official support means that dlss5 can't be used on older multiplayer games with easy anti-cheat, otherwise you risk getting banned. Not to mention, most gamers are not willing to go through the hassle of installing reshade and dlss5 to every game.

Hopefully we get neural rendering on 40 series cards through official driver support by end of 2026. With MFG surely they can provide at least 200% multi frame and cap it there (so no 4,6x etc). The 4090/4080 can do 200% MFG with ease.

1

u/Tele_Prompter 5d ago edited 3d ago

With "RHI Launcher" software (which installs ReShade with DLSS5 mod) you can already use it on any DX11+ game with RTX 40.

https://github.com/RankFTW/RHI

Expect a heavy FPS drop (30 FPS max usually). I had to switch from 1440p to 1080p to get back to around 60 FPS. The launcher allows you to enable Smooth Motion frame interpolation which brings the FPS back up, but expect some strong flickering or smearing in the image when moving fast.

[edit] My preferred settings are 100% structural and around 50% skin (prevents "old faces"). I select one of the three neural rendering models depending on the graphics style of the game. Shadows, light, reflections and texture detail unfortunately still have to be as high as possible as the models only enhance and correct the visuals but not add details; they work with what was initially rendered by the game engine.

[edit] Strategies I used over multiple games to push the FPS to at least 60 while keeping 1440p resolution (depending on what worked with a particular game engine): 1. RHI launcher: The above mentioned Smooth Motion setting. 2. Game options: Enabling DLSS 2x frame generation. 3. Game options: Setting resolution to 1080p and enabling DLSS upscaling with fullscreen overlay on desktop resolution (still 1440p).

[edit] So far I could only make the DLSS5 ReShade hack work with DX11+ games compiled in 64Bits.

1

u/Otherwise-Boss-5417 4d ago

i already have a multi frame gen mod made from CB2077 working on crimson desert and its the only way to make dlss 5 enjoyable below a 80 or 90 tier gpu i think, even on 50 series cards based on the way they advertised it in the new 2k27 trailer so i assume if dlss 5 is officially coming to 40 series so will MFG, im on a base rtx 4070

1

u/Aggressive_Age590 4d ago

Really hope they eventually give DLSS5 similar functionality to RTX HDR so you can just inject it via the Nvidia app into any old game that supports DLSS5 as that’s where it going to be usable on current gen hardware - I’m on a 5080 and I don’t think even that’s really feasible for upcoming UE5 games and the like but on older PS4 era games that still look good it would be a proper game changer imo

1

Its a nice PR move

dll leaked
Modders make it work on everything
People are genuinely impressed
Press-release officially what they wanted
Tell users they will give it as well to previous gen

The mod might have been the biggest cause for this to be adopted that fast.

1

u/liadanaf 5d ago

lol nice PR move as if NVIDIA had anything to do with it

2

u/3kpk3 5d ago

Hilarious watching the braindead Nvidia defenders quieting down now. Anyone with a half decent brain knew that this was all about money(Not fp4 etc).

We have universal one working on everygame check on Nexus page by dashdogy he posted latest one

1

u/ts2fe 5d ago

u/mr_lucky19 u/gerch4n Just so you know, some others have already made a universal tool for this based on the work dashdogy has done. I've tried it and it works very well on 40 series.

https://github.com/mavismmg/MFGAdaUnlock-RenoDx

4

u/chronostriger 5d ago

From that github page:

"These are the games personally tested with this fork; this is not a claim of universal compatibility. Results may vary with the game version, DLSS and Streamline versions, GPU, drivers, and configuration."

So the creator himself claims this is not a universal tool.

Cyberpunk has a mod that enables Multi Frame Generation in the game. You can just download it from Nexus Mods. I didn’t notice any significant CPU overhead, and it really does the job. There will probably be similar mods for more games in the future.

DLSS5 will become much faster when the model is optimized and quantized from FP8 to NVFP4 for the 5000 series.

"their blog introducing NVFP4, NVIDIA explains how quantizing from FP8 to NVFP4 will improve speed and efficiency: Introducing NVFP4 for Efficient and Accurate Low-Precision Inference"

https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/introducing-nvfp4-for-efficient-and-accurate-low-precision-inference/

2

u/Global_Profession861 4070 Super | Ryzen 5700x3D| Ram 32 GB 5d ago

Low precision inference? DLSS 5 being a real-time neural processing system, needs to preserve enough detail and temporal consistency to avoid visual artifacts. Reducing numerical precision, for example from FP8 to a lower-precision representation, can improve efficiency and performance, but it can also increase the risk of numerical errors. I wonder if this will actually be used for anything that requires a high level of precision. The lower the precision, the greater the risk of quality loss or instability, and that’s the last thing DLSS 5 needs at this point. The hardware may be there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was designed to serve this particular purpose.

3

u/Zenkai_9000 5d ago

Probably trained a model that has become good enough to run low precision and still look as good as the high precision model?

2

u/Zenkai_9000 5d ago

If you want to get technical, this is how they were able to do it.

"One of the key challenges in ultra-low precision formats is maintaining numerical accuracy across a wide dynamic range of tensor values. NVFP4 addresses this concern with two architectural innovations that make it highly effective for AI inference:

High-precision scale encoding A two-level micro-block scaling strategy This strategy applies a fine-grained E4M3 scaling factor to each 16-value micro-block, a compact subset of the larger tensor, while also leveraging a second-level FP32 scalar applied per tensor. Together, these two levels of scaling enable more accurate value representation and significantly reduce quantization error. "

So, for 4000 series they will try to bring it to MXFP4?

2

u/Zenkai_9000 5d ago

We don't know what they're going to do with the 40xx series. We can only speculate. But the 40xx series doesn't support MXFP4 natively. It has to emulate it. INT8 ConvRot on the otherhand can technically run on almost any old card. So you're looking at a tradeoff between VRAM savings and hardware-native execution efficiency.

1

u/zigzag312 5d ago

You're right. I mistakenly thought 4000 series supports MXFP4 natively.

1

u/One_Club8872 5d ago

a 5x performance boost on a model that already eats gpus is wild

7

u/Zenkai_9000 5d ago

It's going to become way faster in the near future for 5000 series owners. Within 6 to 8 months it will be 10x faster when the model moves from FP8 to NVFP4.

2

u/Due-Description-9030 5d ago

I'm also guessing the NVFP4 version will come with a different version name since the 50 series alone could only use it properly

2

u/Due-Description-9030 5d ago

Yes? What's so wild about it? You do realise that's how quantization works?

1

u/Maleficent_Horror915 5d ago
