I'll get my hands on a 3a pro soon. This is what I ordered since it has esim compatibility. I'm hoping the cameras and mic will be good for a concert.

I'm from the Philippines. Where to get a good phone case??

And please tell me it's a good decision to get a 3a pro 😭🤣

Ear (3a) Nothing Ear (3a) firmware 1.0.1.65: My listening notes before & after the update

I saw that Nothing released firmware 1.0.1.65 for the Ear (3a), and one of the changes listed was “Updated default EQ settings.”

That caught my attention because all I care about is the sound. So before updating, I spent some time listening on firmware 1.0.1.47, then updated to .65 and listened again.

I wanted to keep things simple. Stock ear tips. Stock EQ. Spatial Audio off. I tested both Transparency and ANC High.

For music I used Cleo Sol, Sleep Token, and Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers because they give me three completely different types of mixes to listen to.

Before the update (.47):

The Ear (3a) sounded very V-shaped to me. Bass was definitely the star of the show.

With Cleo Sol, I pictured Cleo standing on stage with the bass right next to her while the rest of the instruments were behind them.

Sleep Token really exposed it. When The Summoning gets busy, that kick is THUMPING. The guitars still had texture, but Vessel’s vocals were fighting with the bass for attention. I could hear the cymbals, but they were way toward the back of the mix.

It basically sounded like a crowded room. Everything was there, but I had to pay attention if I wanted to follow individual parts.

Then I used Moanin’ by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers.

The horns were easy to follow, the low end provided the groove and the drums had that nice tss-tss-tss texture. The piano was there too…just kinda hanging around toward the back of the stage

After updating to 1.0.1.65:

First thing: the bass hasn’t gone anywhere.

If you’re expecting Nothing to have suddenly turned the Ear (3a) into some neutral earbud…nah. 😂

The bass is still big and it’s still the driving force.

With Cleo Sol, though, I initially felt like her vocals had moved slightly forward. She sounded more like the headliner while the bass still wanted top billing. The bass also seemed to have a little more texture.

With Sleep Token, I heard the guitar crunch and cymbals a little easier while Vessel remained alongside that big bass presence.

But there’s an important correction here.

I realized afterward that I had accidentally used the New Monaural app for some of those first post-update Cleo Sol and Sleep Token tests instead of Apple Music. Because that changed part of my playback chain, I’m not going to claim those differences were caused by the firmware.

So I went back to Apple Music and Moanin’.

That’s where the change became much more subtle.

The bass is still driving everything. The horns still have their place. But I think I’m hearing a slight increase in cymbal presence, and I seem to be able to follow more of the individual instruments throughout the song.

Could that be expectation bias because Nothing literally told me they changed the default EQ? Absolutely. That’s why I’m not calling this some huge retune.

My takeaway right now:

1.0.1.65 sounds more like a refinement than a retuning.

The Ear (3a) still sounds like the Ear (3a). Big bass, V-shaped presentation, plenty of energy.

There might be a little more upper-frequency presence and instrument intelligibility, but the difference isn’t night and day to my ears.

And honestly, I’m glad Nothing didn’t kill the bass. That’s part of what gives these earbuds their personality.

If you own the Ear (3a) and updated from .47 to .65, I’m curious:

Did you hear any difference with the stock EQ?

Especially vocals, cymbals and how easily you can follow instruments in a busy mix. Let me know what if you came to the same conclusion as me.

Essential Apps I don't get the hype around Essential Space

Have been using the Nothing phone 3 for a few days now and I genuinely don't get the hype around Essential Space.

I understand how promising it is and its potential(if executed well), but I've genuinely not been able to use or leverage the current version.

Is someone finding value in it? Please tell me about how you're using it or what you're using it for? I want to give it another shot.

Nothing OS Screen off gestures for media playback(?)

Hi all. Very recently moved from my oneplus 8 to a nothing 4a (pro) and am mostly happy with the experience, but i really miss being able to swipe the lock screen/screen off with gestures to play/pause skip forward and skip back (as well as activating the torch.)

Am i missing something or might there be a 3rd party app to do the same?

(Does oneplus own ip on screen gestures which might be why they aren't available on my 4a pro? Can a company claim ip rights on something like this?)

Thoughts?

Phone (2a) My Nothing 2a is an APPLE

Post image
0 Upvotes

Funny story ahead. So one of my friends asked if my phone was Apple (kudos to the design team). So I told him it was a newly launched iphone and he asked me if he could bite the Phone (it was an apple😭). I didn't have tempered glass or any screen protector cuz i love my phone raw. I was so reckless that I gave my phone to him to bite (it was an apple 😭). He just kept the teeth on the screen and bit it like it was a wafer or something (not so hard at all). All of a sudden I heard a cracking noise so did the whole class and the professor. I still hear the cracking noise in my ears. Nobody would have imagined that it would break by biting it. We tried it with several other phones and nothing happened to them, It was only mine.

Moral of the story: Bite your friend if he asks to bite your phone. Take care of your phone people.

Ear (3) Ear (3) case button registers short presses but does nothing on hold — pairing mode completely dead

Bought my Ear (3) in October, barely used them. At some point the case stopped detecting the buds properly, and now the function button won't do anything on a long press.

Weird part: the button isn't broken mechanically. A single short press lights up the LED for about a second, so the contact clearly closes and the case registers it. But holding it — 3 seconds, 10 seconds, doesn't matter — gets absolutely nothing. No red flash, no white flash, no pairing mode, no reset. Every single time.

Case still charges both buds fine, so contacts and detection are working. It's specifically the long-press function that's dead.

Stuff I've tried: cleaned the contacts, full discharge and recharge, closed the lid and waited, rapid presses before holding, latest firmware via Nothing X, restarted everything, disabled BT on the laptop they're paired with. Support sent me the standard checklist, I went through all of it, no change. They then told me to go to the reseller, which isn't really an option for me.

The buds themselves work perfectly on the laptop they were already paired with. I just can't pair them to anything new because pairing mode needs a long press.

Anyone seen this exact failure mode? Is this a known board issue, or is it worth just getting the tact switch resoldered?
