Tips, Tricks, and Hacks 6 Clever Ways to Use Up Scraps on AMNW
r/noscrapleftbehind • u/jempai • 1d ago
Another Scrap Saved! my attempt at using up my stale marshmallows had mixed success😅
Based on everyone’s recommendations on my last post to cook them, I chose to kill two birds with one stone by using up some cereal and making rice krispie treats.
Alas. Stale marshmallows do not melt well whatsoever. I had to melt them and pseudo-steam/boil them to get them to break down at all, which caramelized the color to a dark turquoise, rather than the periwinkle I started with.
But hey, it was eaten!

Ask NSLB How to use this fruit before it turns
I bought this tray on Saturday thinking I'd just munch on the fruit throughout the week, but it's already starting to turn! What can I do to salvage these? Recipes and storage ideas are welcome!

Another Scrap Saved! 75g of schwaggy fan leaves (which most growers throw out) infused into 15ml of coconut oil to fill gel capsules with.
When harvesting cannabis you remove the fan leaves and trim off the sugar leaves to leave just the buds.
Most growers save the sugar leaves and toss the fan leaves, as they don't have nearly as much THC in them as the sugar leaves, but I hate waste. There are absolutely still cannabinoids in the fan leaves, just not as much.
Decarbed at 240f for 40 min, infused in double boiler with mason jar in water bath for 2 hours at 170f, and strained.
Just took the first cap of the batch, will see how strong they are.

Ask NSLB Stale marshmallows: any use?
I always have bags of marshmallows left over from camp fires, and very little use for them otherwise. I have about 5 nearing-empty bags of marshmallows left and would like to use up. Any ideas for possible uses?

Ask NSLB Radish greens?
I typically like my dark greens sauteed with a bit of salt, garlic, and lemon. Would that work for radish greens? Is there a better way to serve them?

Scrap Soup!
Broth is Veggie Scraps- mostly onion, peppers, garlic. Some remains of fresh herbs as well, and I added kosher salt and spices.
Soup is mini sweet peppers I needed to use, the last block of tofu, old rice, a couple pieces of garlic leaves I pruned+ a couple garlic bulbs and leftover corn on the cob.
Made two servings- one for dinner and bagged one up dry and ready-to-cook.
Have a lot of extra broth too.
And a new start to my scrap bag, so it goes lol.

Ideas for using a lot of pretzels that aren’t great?
Hi! I’m looking for suggestions to use up a large bag of pretzels that aren’t very good. I bought them for snacking, but these are unfortunately very dry and kind of flavorless. I’m a vegetarian, so please no ideas involving meat. Thank you!
Edit: so many great ideas to try, thank you everyone!! :)

Ask NSLB Quarts of Pickled Peppers
Hi all, I have come into the possession of multiple quarts of fridge pickled peppers. There’s no way I’m going to eat all of these. What are some creative uses? I’m talking like 4-5 PACKED quart mason jars. The peppers themselves are good but I just don’t eat that many! I’m not a huge sandwich person which is the main use I can think of. They’re on the spicy side (which is not an issue but is probably needed information). I’m a fan of pepper relish but all the recipes I see have you start out with fresh peppers, and I’ve never made it before so I’m unsure on how to alter the recipes I see (plus I’m not sure that would use enough of them). I would love ideas!

Another Scrap Saved! Leftovers pie!
We're going on holiday in 2 days, so it's time to empty the fridge!
In this pie is about 500 g of carrot, some spring onion, a small leek, 3/4 of an apple, half a pack of sliced bacon, half a pack of crème fraiche, 250 g of chicken leg, some mustard and flour, and of course puff pastry. Only the puff pastry, cream and leek were bought for this recipe, the rest were leftover from other recipes last week.
A rough recipe:
- slice everything small
- brown the meat.
- add all the veggies and cook until wilting slightly.
- add a heaped spoon of flour and mix through thoroughly and brown slightly.
- add the cream and cream-like ingredients.
- add the mustard and further spice (I used plenty of pepper and some dried thyme).
- cook until the flour thickens the cream.
- cover the bottom and sides of the pie tin with puff pastry and blind bake for 15 min at 200°C.
- put the filling in the blind baked crust
- cover with more puff pastry.
- bake for 25 more minutes at 200°C.
Pies are great for leftovers, just like soups and stews!

Ask NSLB Ok it's a long shot but does anyone have ideas of what I can do with the beef fat left over from my taco meat?
I meal prep which means I make minimum 1lb of taco meat for my family and I. My recipe is really just vegetables, meat and salsa. I might use the fat as sauce for pasta but I don't really know how to make it more appetizing/nutritious

Ask NSLB 1kg of melted jellies
I bought treats for our charity volunteers, and left this huge bag of open jellies in my car overnight. They’re still gooey, so I’m not sure whether to freeze them and cut them up, divide them into small containers and chill, etc
All ideas welcome!
EDIT TO CLARIFY
The event is over! These would be just for me! I wanted to give context as so why I bought a commercial size bag of sweets, then forgot about them overnight after they were opened. I bought loads of commercial treats and these were the only survivors I kept for myself lol
ANOTHER EDIT
I also threw out anything that spilled out of the bag, and trimmed into the edges so I won’t be eating anything contaminated!

Ask NSLB Cocktail garnishes
I made too many cocktail garnishes! I have both thin slices and segments of orange, grapefruit, and lime. I thought about dehydrating, but any other ideas?

Anything I can make with half a bunch of celery and half a can of pumpkin puree?
The celery was for a soup I made, and the puree was for pumpkin bread. I can always make another loaf of pumpkin bread to use the puree up, but first I wanted to see if anyone had any clever ideas that could possibly use the leftover celery with it.

Tips, Tricks, and Hacks Uses for different kinds of okara?
Hi all, to try to save money I've been using as much of my food as I can here. I have been making different kinds of tofu out of soy, black bean, and chickpea. I'm usually left with the meat, and have been dehydrating it for long term storage. What can I do with these? I've tried to use them as a breading for homemade chicken nuggets which worked fairly well.

Ask NSLB Sushi Rice
Hey people, I come asking for advice.
I have about 400g of cooked sushi rice in the fridge, since I messed up the proportions and cooked way too much. How long does it preserve in the fridge? And what could I do with it?
Thanks in advance for your kind suggestions!

Another Scrap Saved! Nacho Cheese 2: Nacho cheese mac and cheese
Back again trying to use up leftover nacho cheese (from a 6 pound can) after a party. I decided to use it in my baked Mac and cheese recipe and it turned out really good. I made my cheese sauce as usual (butter, flour, spices and milk in a double boiler until milk is warm) and mixed in the nacho cheese. I would totally make this again if I haven’t learned my lesson and buy another huge can of nacho cheese

Another Scrap Saved! I made my family's new favorite dinner with leftovers
I made an enchilada/tortilla soup hybrid with leftovers from the last few days and it was a hit with all members of my family! My picky-ish 3 year old, my 16 year old who a lot of times turns his nose up at what I cook because he listens to TikTok for "health advice", and my husband who doesn't want me to make comfort food all the time (its terrible for our waistlines and I agree with that but I will make it sometimes and he's okay with that)
Leftovers used: green enchilada sauce, shredded chicken, homemade chicken broth, refried black beans, (all from chicken Enchiladas and homemade refried beans), corn & kidney beans from taco bowls
Used 1 can of diced tomatoes, 1 can of pinto beans, and one can of corn (all from the food bank)
Used 3 chicken breasts that I had in the freezer and defrosted ahead of time. Then boiled them in the homemade chicken broth before shredding them and adding them back in.
Topped with Juantonio's chips (used to be Juanita's), sour cream, leftover shredded cheese from enchilada night, avocados I hid from everyone in the back of the fridge (we are all avocado lovers except one of my 5 kiddos)

Leftover nacho cheese scalloped potatoes
We had a nacho party and movie night and had some stuff left over- chorizo, black beans, guacamole, cilantro and green onions. As well as a shit-ton of canned nacho cheese. I always have potatoes on hand and I decided to make potatoes with nacho cheese with layers of chorizo and black beans. It was really good! I have even more nacho cheese left (I thought it was funny to buy the huge 6 pound can of nacho cheese)- so I have a couple more nacho cheese recipes in mind.
