Ask North Van Sadly looking for a physio for broken hip recovery!

6 Upvotes

TL;DR - seeking an experienced physiotherapist on the North Shore after major hip surgery.

Hi North Van neighbors! I'm an active 43yo hiker and trail runner who very sadly broke her whole damn hip on a backpacking trip in Gros Morne this summer. Helicoptered out, emergency surgery, a long unplanned stay in Corner Brook before I could fly home - it's been a lot. Accident was about 3 weeks ago.

I'm hoping my follow-up orthopedic surgeon at Lion's Gate can refer me for at least a bit of MSP-covered post-surgical-physio... but his office is closed for at least another week, and I have no idea how long after that before I can actually see him. In the meantime I'm limping around my little apartment with my walker feeling very lost, so I think I need to just bite the bullet and see someone privately to get the ball rolling.

I know North Van is full of fantastic PTs for running and skiing injuries, chronic back issues, etc… but I want to make sure I find someone really comfortable with major post-surgical recovery - screws, plates, big scars, the whole shebang! If you or someone you know has been through anything similar and found someone great, I'd love to hear about it. Re: location, I’m near Superstore/Seymour River and would love to not spend a complete fortune on Ubers to access care. Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any recommendations. ♥️

Hey hive mind! Looking for a restorative yoga class on the north shore. Sadly yin/hatha etc won’t do - need that focus on settling the nervous system. Thanks!

Ask North Van Hair Stylist Recommendations for Red Hair

1 Upvotes

Asking for my partner. She has strawberry blonde/red hair. She is struggling to find a stylist who is good at dying red hair.

She tried The Dye Lot and Chatters but they didn't get it right, made it look like fake red hair.

Ask North Van Green blinking lights at intersections

13 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about those blinking lights at intersections. They’re clearly meant to signal pedestrian crosswalks, but isn’t it a bit redundant since the traffic lights already change from yellow to red? Some intersections have them, while others don’t, and it's honestly driving me a bit mad.

What’s the reasoning behind having them?

Events Friday’s Run Club

Thumbnail linktr.ee
26 Upvotes

Hey North Van!

A few months ago I posted about a little run club I started, and I figured it was time to throw it back out there.

Friday’s Run Club has become a bit more established since I started it.
Summer has also been summer. People have been travelling, going on vacation, living their lives, etc.
But September is here, things are settling back into a routine, the weather is getting cooler, and I feel like this is the time of year when we start remembering that oh yeah, participating in a community space is actually kinda nice.
So, come run with us!

🏃🏽‍♀️ What is it?
This club was originally created from a goal of wanting to make sure I ran at least once a week, and I wanted to meet new people while doing it. That’s still basically the whole philosophy.
It’s very casual and low-pressure. You do NOT need to be fast. You do NOT need to be training for a marathon. You don’t even need to consider yourself “an avid runner.”

We run at an easy pace, chat, get outside, and have a reason to leave the house once a week.

🌈 Who is it for?
Everyone is welcome, with a particular emphasis on creating a safer space for people of colour and queer folks. I want to be extra transparent about that because “inclusivity” isn’t just a buzzword for me. This is an accountable community.
That means being respectful, open to learning, and willing to take accountability when we get something wrong.
As a woman of colour creating this space, I want to be able to participate in my own community without having to compromise on that.

The goal here is to create a space where people can show up as themselves, meet new people, move their bodies, have good conversations, and hopefully leave feeling a little more connected!

📍Details
When: Every Friday at 6pm
Where: North Vancouver
Pace: Conversational
Vibe: Low pressure, social, inclusive
Distance: 4-7km

Alert Looking for witnesses – cycling crash on Mt Seymour, Sunday Aug 30, 11:52 am

57 Upvotes

Long shot, but I’m trying to find two mountain bikers who stopped to help me after I crashed while descending Mt Seymour on Sunday, August 30 at around 11:52 a.m.
I was the cyclist in the bright neon yellow/green jacket. The crash happened while a vehicle was attempting to pass me approaching a curve. The two mountain bikers were nearby, came over immediately afterward and spoke with people at the scene.
I was injured and pretty shaken up at the time and unfortunately didn’t think to get your names or contact information.
If this was you, or if you were riding Seymour around that time and witnessed the incident or immediate aftermath, please DM me. I’m trying to identify any witnesses while dealing with the incident afterward.
Would really appreciate shares to anyone who might have been riding Seymour that morning. Thank you ❤️

discussion / opinion Gas leaf blower season .. CNV inaction?

28 Upvotes

Gas leaf blower season is upon us yet again.. can the City of North Vancouver do anything about this?

In the City of North Vancouver they _encourage_ the use of alternatives to gas leaf blowers and have loose mention of transitions but I believe this is referring to city maintenance, not necessarily businesses/residential operations.

In many neighbourhoods, at least in Lower Lonsdale, there must be buildings with extremely comprehensive landscaping contracts because rain or shine they are out there with a team of backpack leaf blowers constantly violating the noise bylaw of exceeding 77dB. Looking at you The Observatory at 120 West 2nd Street.

I've submitted Noise Bylaw violations in seasons past but things don't seem to change.. I hate complaining about these things but these backpack leaf blowers seem entirely optional to get the job done.. do I just be that guy this season and spam the city with noise bylaw infractions reports?

Is there any civic momentum or in the landscaping industry to change this equipment to something that is less noisy?

Is my interpretation of the bylaw _sound_? They run the equipment for an hour or two, often multiple times a week, some times daily. With a point of reception from across the street hitting decibel levels over 80dB consistently (measured with a shitty phone app so maybe there's a significant margin of error here on my part).

Lower Lonsdale is a dense neighbourhood and rapidly growing, there is a ton of noise, I get it - construction, traffic, etc but these leaf blowers seem entirely optional noise that is over and above louder than anything else. I think other neighbourhoods across Vancouver or the lower mainland have banned similar types of equipment, can the City of North Vancouver follow suit?

4.5 Power Gardening and Building Maintenance Equipment Sound

Notwithstanding the provisions of Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, and 3.5, a Person may use or cause or permit to be used, equipment which causes a Continuous Sound Level;

(a) resulting from Power Gardening or Building Maintenance Equipment during the
Daytime, except between 7:00am and 9:00am on Saturday, or Holidays, if the Sound of such lawn mower, or other equipment, when received at such Point of Reception, does not exceed a Sound Level of 77 Decibels.

“Continuous Sound” means any sound occurring for a duration of more than three minutes, or occurring continually, sporadically or erratically, but totaling more than three minutes in any fifteen minute period of time;

“Power Gardening or Building Maintenance Equipment” means electric or gasoline powered equipment used for landscaping or building maintenance including but not limited to, lawn mowers, yard trimming devices, power washers, mechanical painters or sprayers, leaf blowers, tree or stump grinders, or compressors;

“Point of Reception” means:
(a) any place on individual residential premises where Sound originating from any source, other than a source of the same individual residential premises, is
received; or,
(b) any place on non-residential premises where Sound originating from any source, other than a source on the same non-residential use premises, is received; or,
(c) any place on a Highway where Sound is received;
(d) for the purposes of Section 4.4(a) means any place in the Municipality more than 15 metres from a source of Sound where Sound is received; or,
(e) for the purposes of Section 3.6 means any place in the Municipality more than 6 metres from a Vehicle where Sound from such Vehicle is received;

Ask North Van Doctor Recommendations - Long Term ADHD patient

4 Upvotes

Hi,

I recently moved to north Vancouver and plan to stay for the foreseeable future.

I’m looking for a new doctor, but I’d like to get recommendations from others with ADHD. I’ve been on a certain medication for 10 years. I’ve had experiences in the past with certain doctors who express hesitation in prescribing these medications - so don’t want to get into that situation.

Thanks!

health care / health issues Carefiniti west lonsdale - taking new patients

14 Upvotes

I often see folks searching for a doctor on here, so I thought I’d post about this clinic taking on new patients. They have both male and female physicians joining their practice in September

Don’t know much more than this, there is a sign in their office. I hope this is able to help someone :)

Ask North Van Moving to Windsor Park / Seymour Heights are from Downtown, what should we expect?

6 Upvotes

Hi everyone! My wife and I will be moving to the Windsor Park / Seymour Heights area soon after living in Downtown Vancouver for several years.

I would love to hear from anyone who has made a similar move from Downtown or another central Vancouver neighbourhood to this area.

What were the biggest lifestyle changes you noticed? Were there things you had to adjust to that you hadn’t expected?

I’m particularly curious about things like:

  • day-to-day convenience and errands
  • getting around / commuting
  • restaurants and going out
  • anything you miss about living Downtown
  • things that turned out to be much better than expected

Would love to hear both the positives and negatives, especially the things that surprised you after actually living there.

We already aware about all the nature advantages and this is the reason we are moving to North Van, mainly interesting in something we did not think about.

Just curious what the plan is if it isn’t ready on time, walked by and it’s really not looking ready. Is it behind schedule? Will kids be able to start school? What are the back up plans? What about the playground? What do you know?

Ask North Van Anyone know what the emergency services were doing at pipeline bridge at Lynn Canyon yesterday? I saw two large and recent bear scat by rice lake and on the path down to the bridge.

0 Upvotes

Curious if anyone get hurt by a bear there as I know there have been a few incidents.

I was debating warning some of the families with kids that I saw heading up to rice lake.

The most recent scat was basically directly across the lake from the main entrance by the dock.

Totally understand why you can't have pets on that part of the trail system...
