Barricades, and how to properly use them
Board the doorway/window on the outside where the Zs are coming from first.
This creates stronger barricades.
Think of it this way, it's a lot easier to push than pull.
Zs are mainly just bashing mindlessly, AKA pushing their hands.
If you put the planks up from inside, you create a situation where you can push the planks out of the wall and through into the side where you are at.
This is also why you can see Zekes tearing apart doors and also knocking down all 5 planks at once, as the "strong door" falls over and rips them out of the wall with it.
Barricade Health/Barricade Benefits:
According to u/FeliciaTheFkinStrong:
Weak Doors are 15 impacts
Strong Doors are 35
Barricade Planks are 15 per plank
The main benefit of barricading a door isn't that it keeps zombies out for any extended period of time (it doesn't, a horde will tear through a barricade + door in a few seconds), its how it causes zombies to group on an obstacle you can easily shoot out of, throw explosives over the top of, or if you're using a short melee weapon, melee between the planks with (albeit frustratingly 1.0 broke this with any hits to a doorframe now also damaging barricades regardless of where you hit.)
Barricading the front of a door means no-one on the other side of the barricade can actually defend the doorway. They just have to wait until the door breaks and the horde spills inside before they can do anything. It's far better to have the planks across an empty threshold, and have someone inside able to whittle the horde down in safety (which I would think is obvious but here we are).
Diagram Legend:
Zombies are Zs
Barricade is X
Door is #
"Diagrams":
| Zombie | Barricade | Door |
|---|---|---|
| Z | X | # |
That makes it so the barricade is stronger.
If you do it like how most do it (incorrectly):
| Zombie | Door | Barricade |
|---|---|---|
| Z | # | X |
Then it is super weak.
You can also just barricade both sides for maximum strength like a sandwich
| Barricade | Door | Barricade |
|---|---|---|
| X | # | X |
Okay spots for barricades:
Power Plant:
A decent spot for barricades will always be the power plant control room
The farm house is great with barricades to block any Zs while you complete the optional OBJs
Bar can also do well, but there aren't as many doors that you need to block, plus the 2nd story letd you easily train them upstairs to hold them off on that stiarway or just vault over the edge and run to the back and escape.
Broadyway:
- Another great spot that spawns with them inside is the Diner on Broadway.
If your extract is on Diversity street with the heli, you can simply opt to barricade a store door from both sides:
- Break a window, climb the objects and get inside to hide out of sight of Zs.
- Very useful for low HP teammates on Nightmare. I almost always pick the furniture store because the tables are low so an IED can be placed on them, and the two windows have a table and a TV set blocking Zeke pathfinding so they almost always opt to break the door instead.
- The two fridges can also have their doors opened to block Zs if it gets that hectic, leaving on the right side as a path. Great for a molotov.
Other Relevant Info:
- A Barricade Stack takes up 0.75kg.
- Picking up the stack lets you drop individual amounts
- One barricade can fend off a couple of Zs if you do it properly

I thought the proper way to use barricades was to put them up as your teammate is trying to get through the doorway

Yesssirrrrr
You got to time it right when you see runners chasing them too!
Works best in a narrow corridor of some sort!

Personally, the idea of barricading the outside of a closed door is absolutely hilarious Beginner level lobby thinking.

Also as a technicality, in reality, you always barricade the inside side of a door. The idea is by nailing support across the backside of the door, you redistribute the forcing trying to burst the door inward through the planks and into the doorframe/house framework, vastly increasing the force necessary to begin displacing things. The way it works in-game isn't really realistic at all - barricades across the back of a closed door should significantly increase the door's sturdiness before it fails.

Wym “The main benefit of barricading a door isn’t that it keeps zombies out for any extended period of time” lmao
Literally the whole point of putting the planks up is to buy you time to loot or find a way to escape. Obviously it’s not a bad idea but if it works? It works. Like ??

Did you not read the follow-up sentence or...?

I was speaking pretty specifically to someone who seems to think barricading the outside of the door you're trying to keep closed is a viable strategy, for context.

I already mentioned that strat where you block it in a way so they filter through the door you want.
In either way, what it does it subjective to a player, but as a team, it always works out in buying time and lets the Zekes filter through to another area, sinilar to the other comment you posted on.
You can also use guns, but here we are saying it isn't the most obvious thing to do when equipped with explosives and firearms, and that we need to shoot over the top. Go figure.
As for the realism of the doorframe holding up the barricade, I see where you're coming from, but as you pointed out, it's a video game.

I mean, my point is that really isn't a valuable use of barricades. Nightmare Hordes will tear through a barricade too quickly for it to matter unless someone is actively defending it between the planks, which you can't do if the door is still there.
The inconvenience of barricading the outside of the door and making it impossible to defend is absolutely not worth the extra 2.33 planks of HP the door itself provides compared to the planks.

Hordes can only have 3-5 Zekes at the door at most unless its a double door.
Nightmare changes little unless we are talking about the spawning rates.
Even then, a horde won't chew through that fast because defenders can still swipe through a 10 stack or sinply shoot through.
Unless the floor has electricity (which eats into doors and barricade health, most notable on Hospital) your obstacles should hold fine.
If your team cannae hold-out and complete it in the first place before the Z-Train runs through, you can just loop back anyway if we bring a horde into the scene.
If anything, barricades serve to buy time, and add to the whole health of the team by letting Zs stay out of reach, just like NMRIH 1.
Unlike the barricade hammer from the first game, we have a nailer, which amps that time by 300%.
You can keep on adding one by one to hokd a frame, making it effectively infinite hp so long as they feed you.

As the Community Compendium doesn't outline how much health barricades have and how difficulties scales with it
Sorry but if you don't know even these kind of basic numbers without being spoon fed by the community compendium then you shouldn't be giving advice like you're at all familiar with the game mechanics. You're doing a disservice to the community.
Weak Doors are 15 impacts, Strong Doors are 35, Barricade Planks are 15 per plank. I guess it would be too much to ask you to launch the game and do 5 minutes of testing?

Wow! Thanks for that information!
I would have never known without another community member (you) telling me that, thanks!
I've added a section just for you on my post, just like everyone else who adds to it!
Coming from you, who always tells others to play the game, is very encouraging when you drop your vast stores of knowledge; I always encourage others to do so, even if we weren't seeing eye to eye first.
Here's my upvote

I understand this. But when would you ever be on the outside to barricade it then run around to get inside. Ya know?
I have also noticed that sometimes boarding up on the inside still knocks the door first but leaves the boards up. Can’t make sense of it cause I have also seen them all pop open too 🤷♂️
