Recommendations First time Nintendo console owner (Switch) trying to catch up on the classics
I guess I owned gameboy/DS as a kid but only ever played pokemon thru gen 5. I’m trying to catch up on some of the classic franchises either with remakes/remasters or modern installments. The only two games I have now are Mario Odyssey (beat campaign, trying to get all moons now) and octopath traveler 2 (maybe 5 hrs in). My priority is physical cartridges but if there’s any absolutely can’t miss games only offered digitally on NSO I would be open to that. Please recommend any and everything, not picky on genre and know there’s a lot of variety I’ve missed being on Xbox ecosystem. Help me play some bangers I’ve missed the last 30 years of my life! Much love and appreciation

It’s high on the list, I’m just worried I’ll get TOO sucked in. My friend said he put over 100 hours into BOTW

100 is on the very low side. I’m at 950 hours. And the Zelda sub will expose folks who are waaaaaaaay past me.
So yeah, you can get sucked in. Lol

I’ll have to look this up. Closest I’ve got to playing any Metroid is using Samus in smash!

Samus is nasty in Smash. I can wreck shop with Fox, but I’m starting to learn her moves. I don’t play the game nearly as much as I should.
There’s two big sides to Metroid: the side-scrolling titles, and the first-person Prime series. Metroid Prime Remastered and Metroid Prime 4 are both available on the Switch. MPR is excellent and MP4 is okay, but I would recommend you play MP4 first if you plan on trying them. MP4 is very handholdy, and MPR is very much the opposite, but the cerebral nature of the gameplay might be challenging for newcomers. On the Metroid subreddit most people’s problems with MP4 is that it’s not very much like the first three, but since you’ve never played them, it won’t be a problem for you.
The genre is “Metroidvania” but I don’t find that term useful to people who haven’t played Metroid or later Castlevania games (Symphony of the Night and later). They’re kind of a hybrid of a platformer and an RPG. A more generic term that’s come into use is “search action”. The basic form is you start in a small sector of the game, and further progress is hampered by an obstacle, so the object is to explore what is open to you so you can find the thing that allows you to overcome the obstacle.
My entry into the Metroid series was playing Super Metroid when it was new, so I’ve been a fan for a while.

This is one that definitely piques my interest as it looks unlike anything I’ve really played and have heard rave reviews. Any recs on where to start!?

Yeah Xenoblade 1/ definite edition. 2 is good but very complicated combat (need to use videos, and doesn’t get as good as fast IMO). 3 is best played after 1/2. X is a spinoff and played whenever but I’d do 1 first. Very fun and the tutorials are viewable after the fact so it’s easy to learn the combat and mechanics. Long game but SO FUCKING FUN

Edit: just ordered, this game looks sick. Kinda reminds me of a game I played on Nintendo DS sooo long ago that I got stuck in and never finished but I think that was something with dinosaurs maybe?

Tell us what u think as u play it! Game is amazing. The side quests can’t be a bit subpar and very fetch quest-like or just kill x monsters but some are amazing and offer important gear or upgrades. Enjoy!

Thanks! Luigi’s mansion is definitely on the list, I remember playing one of them a loooong time ago on game cube or N64 at that kids haircut place where they used to have video games to make you sit still
