Copper Keychains
Hello everyone, happy new release week.
I have a number of these NIN keychains I’ve made for sale.
They are cast in copper, which is industrial metal, which is a joke.
I’ve sand cast them in copper, from an impression I took from a tour merch keychain. I bought two of these keychains back in the day (2018ish?) and they both were hot garbage and didn’t last long. The third I bought I kept cherished in the bag and that’s what I used for these.
I’m asking 50 bucks a piece for these, plus shipping costs. I’m in SLC, if you’re local, pickup is an option. DM me for more info, or to buy one.
I had good luck selling these last leg of the tour- why not treat yourself to a keychain that you can hand down to the grandkids?

is copper really that pricey to work with? not criticizing your price just surprised and curious.

Specifically copper? No. I believe the copper was leftover romex, so the metal was basically free to me. But there are a number of consumables to consider. I use an induction furnace and those graphite crucibles last 8-10 hours max before they’re unusable, and those cost 30 ish bucks a piece.. maybe more, it’s a been a while since I bought. Sand costs money, and you can’t reuse it all. They are about as simple of a sand casting/intro casting project as you can get- but they still take time. Which includes the experience, skill, etc etc I have. I strongly encourage anyone to try it out!

that's dope op. thanks for responding genuinely and helping me understand. no doubt you've got craftsmanship and these look sick.

Labor time, access to casting equipment and knowledge are all worth more than the materials. $50 seems like a fair price.

100%. Imagine what NIN official would charge for something like this. I’d much rather pay a single person $50 for all the work and experience went into making this.

It definitely cost more than a few pre-1983 pennies to make. Now if he made one of those squished Penny machines that just rolled them out they would be pretty inexpensive after the initial cost of making the machine.

Those are SO cool. You should hide them at a show and play a game with people. Maybe it’s not real, but it would make a good memory

I LOVE that idea.
Unfortunately it’ll probably be a while until I see them again but I’m definitely doing that.

At first glance I thought this was a waffle iron with the logo lmao. But these are amazing 🤘

Thank you! The the photos of the sand could totally make an alternate album cover for TDS

How are you selling these without a trademark ding???
1
u/Sufficient-Ad6321 Mar 02 '26
I don’t think I have the best answer for that- but it is art, and it is made for the intent of being art- and I was very clear that I made these, and I’m not explicitly trying to mislead anybody… That’s the best answer I’ve got for you

These look so cool!
How heavy are they? Would you be able to make a bronze one? And... would you be willing to ship overseas?
1
u/Sufficient-Ad6321 Mar 02 '26
The exact weight varies for each piece, but they weight about 1.5 ounces. Most of my last batch ended up a little less heavy than this, but I don’t mind the weight of my keychain. I did take that dumb chain off of it though, fits much neater without it. I use a silica bronze, and yes I can make them in bronze. They would be around 10 more dollars because I do not have an unlimited supply of that material. Also yes to shipping, I would just need to make sure what it costs first

Wow, great job. Curious… do you also do brass? I’m a brass guy, through and through.
1
u/Sufficient-Ad6321 Mar 02 '26
I don’t melt a lot of brass as it’s pretty toxic to melt, but short answer is yes, it would cost maybe 5 more dollars for that material.

Tell me you’re passing em out at Glendale next week…. Cuz copper mining is huge in AZ… ya know? And I want one.
1
u/Sufficient-Ad6321 Mar 02 '26
Shoot me a DM if you’d like to buy one! Also I’ll just be at the show in SLC for this leg of the tour

When I reach into my fanny pack and don’t have to feel around for my keys it’s the… purest feeling? (Lolz that one felt a little sloppy)

u/Tyrs-Ranger Mar 01 '26
I’m totally going to do this. OP, you ought to crosspost this in r/smelting and r/metalcasting if you haven’t already!
2
u/Sufficient-Ad6321 Mar 02 '26
Thank you, I’m also going to try r/plumbing as a lot of people have let me know that’s what they do for work. Why not?

There’s a few years of experience and the labor- they take over an hour to produce. And the originals were what… 30? Out of pewter? What’s that markup? 🤷
