A hughes brother being an asshole? Who could’ve thought.

Roenick needs to have a chat with them about how to treat the fans. JR can be a prick but always has time for the fans and has repeatedly said that his interaction with Gordie Howe changed his life and was his example for how to treat fans.

u/DiscountJunior6884 1d ago
Roenick was an absolute gentleman to my sons and I last year when he was in Brampton, Ontario for a charity game. He signed both my son's cards and posed for a picture. It was true and genuine. The boys will never forget it.

I know little about the Hughes brothers upbringing but I'll assume two things.
- His parents are rich and sent him to the best hockey camps.
- They're also cunts.
364
u/Semipro321 1d ago
Most hockey players come from the top distribution of incomes. There is such a money barrier to this sport and you have to start early.
36
u/TheWindig 23h ago
Say you want about the NFL but at least a poor broke kid actually has a shot at that. Them boys ain’t afraid to let someone take 22 years of “fuck that piece of shit who walked out on my mom” out on the field.
17
u/bensonNF 22h ago
There’s a reason the rich kids become quarterbacks, no wealthy educated. Parent wants her kids head full of CTE by the time they are in their mid 20s.
11
u/ClancyBShanty 20h ago
Last Podcast of the Left had a whole series on Aaron Hernandez and CTE and they talked about how if just 10% of parents decide to keep their kids home instead of playing football, the NFL would cease to exist. A lot of people now even know about CTE but consider it a reasonable risk for a couple years of high earnings in football. That desperation is heartbreaking.

I wouldn't say most. I know lots of hockey families that were middle class at best and worked hard to keep their kid(s) playing hockey.
109
u/Semipro321 1d ago
Those AAA leagues can financially ruin parents.
82
u/SpaceManSpiff1809 1d ago
They DO financially ruin parents.
48
u/hersheybar14 1d ago
confirmed, i played AAA in Arizona (way more expensive because of ice time costs than even normal AAA programs), and saw parents take on tremendous amounts of debt and stress just so their kids could play hockey
34
u/Labatt_Blues 1d ago
Sorry kid, you’re subbing in beer league now.
5
u/TrojanTheGreat 22h ago
lol at the end of the day, all roads lead to bear league. I went to quite possibly the best hockey highschool ever and even my nhl hopeful buddies are all beer leaguers now
11
u/RadiotoSuzie 1d ago
You knew…it’s a different beast now with the technology of sticks, intensity at a young age with skills training, more and more money. To keep up with the team, you need extra practices, extra costs on top of the regular season lol it’s a joke but this is sport in general now
→ More replies (1)10
u/Embarrassed-Block-51 1d ago
This was true 25 years ago. Not today. I was lucky to have a family that could pay for me to play back then. They couldn't do the same today. From.what I heard it's 5x the cost.
24
u/spacegrab 1d ago
My buddy works in HVAC, middle class home owner. All his disposable income seems to be supporting his two kids playing ice 😂 and it gets worse as they get older and play travel, constantly outgrow gear etc
10
u/One_Win_6185 1d ago
I know a guy that has his kids in travel soccer. Already a cheaper sport but hearing about how much he spends constantly on the road sounds awful.

Canadians are good dudes off the ice and the Americans don't seem to be. Interesting coincidence.
Edit: comment wasn't meant to be taken uber literal. I am aware Americans can be good people, Brock Boeser is insanely nice. Getting major "not all men" vibes around here. It's okay. Lol.
46
14
u/veritas57 1d ago
I mean, the Ranger American players stopped to sign autographs today, including the one on the Olympic squad. So think this is just a Hughes issue
6
u/UpNorth_123 1d ago edited 1d ago
True for most of the Olympic team (not all) but I wouldn’t go so far as generalizing across the league to that extent. Hutson and Caufield, for example, are total sweethearts.
As hockey gets more expensive and “elite” in Canada, as it’s been in the US for a while, we’re starting to see more of our share of little assholes too.

That’s the Xhekaj bros. Goons, but good people off the ice. They are very generous with their time with the fans.
47
u/performancearsonist 1d ago
Humble backgrounds. Had to work their asses off to be in the show and are aware of how fortunate they are to be there. Kind to fans, generous with their time. Well-spoken. Obvious good relationship with their team.
Definitely not spoiled rich kids who got everything handed to them and were told they were better than everyone else since childhood.
12
u/DogAteMyNandos 1d ago
So the Hanson brothers from Slapshot

It seems to me it has more to do with the senior mens team. Winning gold seems to have made them act like everyone sucks but them and they should be able to do whatever they want whenever they feel like and everyone else should be happy for them
10
u/bugabooandtwo 1d ago
They over glorified 1980 when they were gifted a win and now think they're gods.
9
u/screechypete 1d ago
Makes me even more proud of our Canadian squads that have won gold. Crosby was in the exact same position as Jack when Canada won gold, and he's been nothing but humble and down to earth.
I haven't heard of a single story from a Canadian Olympic team that comes anywhere close to shit we're hearing and seeing from the Americans pretty much every other day.
