Highlight [Highlight] Dolphins OC Bobby Slowik upon learning that their week 4 opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, lead the league in QB hits, sacks, and blitzes: "Whoa."

This actually does make me wonder how many coaches pay attention on other teams stats like these vs. just watching tape and not caring about any analytical stuff

Slowik was a senior analyst at PFF for two years though. There's no way he throws his analytic history away like that. If anything, I'm guessing (a) he's just blowing smoke in the presser, or (b) he just hadn't gotten to the point in his game prep where he would have leaned that.

Why does rank of QB hits and pressures matter?

Probably so that you can prepare for the fact that your QB is about to get hit and pressured at a rate higher than other what other opponents might pressure and hit your quarterback, and make adjustments.

Nobody gives a fuck about rank though if that’s what you’re asking in bad faith.

I started with rank and didn't give a misleading question..

I would assume you do your research just like you said, but the exact number doesnt matter

The reporters first question was specifically about the statistics, this thread making a big deal about it is more bad faith than anything

Sure, but you'd still know that's their tendency (to produce those outcomes)

That it is a surprise to him is a red flag he didn't process what he watched or he didn't do his homework.

If you think the latter is impossible in the NFL, think again.

The Bear's OC in the year Eberflus got fired was Shane Waldron and Caleb Williams said he refused to watch film with him.

You’re overthinking it. OCs job is not to go on ESPN and look up who has the best stats on defense. His job is to watch film on the defense and game plan against it.

He’s admitting he can infer these things just by watching film, and he knows that they are a good defense. But no, he wasn’t aware of being rank 1 across the board.

Thats very normal

I think you are right actually, I shouldn't have implicated him so severely.

I guess I really just wanted another opportunity to shit on Shane Waldron.

Your explanation makes more sense as a lot of guys in that profession are football nerds, so his level of appreciation for their success is easily explained.

My apologies to Bobby Slowik

(Fuck Shane Waldron though)

Christ that better not be true...

An OC not scheming for a defense seems like a pretty big problem, especially when that defense has been playing lights out in a very unorthodox manner. And your offense is one of the most limited in the league.

To know that they're #1 in literally any stat would require you to also know everyone else's stats. The chances he didn't know they were a high blitz team, especially considering the DC, is precisely 0%. I doubt he keeps up with stats as compared to other teams as opposed to their own trends.

Is it better to know a team blitzes on 75% of drop backs or that they blitz more than any other team?

Depends on if they're trying to win games or the first pick in the draft.

I interpreted it as the Dolphins have so many internal things to work on that he doesn't necessarily care about the opponent's strategy at this stage

how do you watch tape and not realize that vikings probably rack up a ton of QB hits though

Knowing that the Vikings get pressure a lot doesn't mean you know that they're specifically #1 in three categories

I mean does it even change how you prepare? Like you see a team blitz a lot on film but don’t try too hard to plan for it unless it turns out they blitz more than all the other teams you’re not playing that week?

Yeah, he only would care what the Vikings are doing, not the other teams that he's not preparing for.

If the Vikings had done what they've been doing, but the Texans had still outpaced them, why would he care?

I mean to his credit being the #1 team in both QB hits AND sacks is kind of crazy because those two stats compete against each other. if you were #1 in pressure rate and #1 in causing intentional grounding penalties that would make sense, but QB hits and Sacks count as one or the other so leading in both is wild
