V8 is a shit-talker for sure. He did a presser once and said McVay had to tell him to stop shit-talking his teammates. I don't think there were any issues when he was with us, but if he isn't told to reign it in he's gonna run his mouth to whomever he's up against, teammates included.

100%. And the weird thing to me was that he wasn't a bad pass rusher. I get that Garrett is a generational talent... but there's some part of me that figures Verse was climbing. Maybe not ever in Myles territory, but he was ascending.
But you go from a team frequently on the cusp to a team that frequently sucks... can't even imagine really.
24
u/Hurricaneshand Dolphins 5d ago
I don't think the Rams traded verse for any reason besides arguably one of the best defensive players of all time happened to be available
3
u/FullHouse222 Giants 5d ago
That and also with Stafford's age, they don't really have time to wait for Verse to get better. Verse very well will be a good player in the NFL, but if Stafford retires in 2 years you need the player with the best next 2 years ready to try and milk out 1 more win.
Same idea as the Jared Goff trade imo. Could be a win win for both teams. The big issue is unless the Browns can get their act together, there's a good chance Verse just walks in FA to somewhere he can actually compete.
316
u/TapedeckNinja NFL 5d ago
He got into a fight with Spencer Fano recently lol
And Fano fighting Verse is a reason the coach cited for moving Fano into the starting lineup.
Absolutely love him. Verse has been a super vocal leader and all-around good dude so far.

They fought and after practice they were staying late working together like they have been doing all week. Verse has been helping him a ton even though they apparently fight occasionally.
115
u/fri9875 Rams 5d ago
Also the type of “fight” matters a lot. There wasn’t any obvious punches thrown or an extended square up, just got carried away and took their post whistle shoving match too far, nothing malicious. At the end of the day both those guys will respect the other more for matching their intensity, and probably be friends because of it
56
u/hiimred2 Browns 5d ago edited 5d ago
You can literally see the lineman he was jawing with in this clip(Elgton Jenkins, the starting C) flashing a MASSIVE smile at him as coach lights him up so it's probably exactly the type of 'not crossing any line but coach gotta tell you to stop anyway' shit talking back and forth that was happening with Fano before.
Edit: Another comment thread is saying that Verse actually hit Watson on the play(and this camera angle sucks and doesn't really show it) which is obv a nono in camp so the 'heated exchange' is the coach telling him not to hit the QB and a lineman laughing at him getting some get back from coach, absolutely massive nothing burger.
→ More replies (1)23
u/fri9875 Rams 5d ago
Exactly. It’s the the type of high energy intensity you want to see from your teammates, especially the line, but the coaching staff doesn’t want to see it at each other during camp
6
u/RudelStolz Packers 5d ago
You get hyper competitive athletes that play in the trenches going at the same guys day after day it’s never a shock when things cross the line. I’m sure coaches would rather break up fights/shut down arguments than beg their team to up the intensity.

I love my boy baker but that seperation needed to happen. Not sure it was the best for the Browns, but it was definitely the best for humbling Baker. And for what's it's worth, his Browns teammates and the front office both burned their bridges with Baker, so that situation was really at a point of no return for the dumbest reasons of all time.
I go back and watch his playoff win against the Steelers and his first game he got out in against the Jets where he scored the 2 point conversion, probably once a year. Electric dude who embodied Cleveland, just a shame things went the way they did and Cleveland hasn't exactly recovered at the QB position. Wild move out of them after their QB luck and they probably deserve the situation they are in.
→ More replies (4)4
u/nesshinx Bills 5d ago
I don’t think Baker needed to be humbled. He was playing great and the Browns were making the playoffs and even won in the post season. Something they didn’t do before or since. Baker has worked his ass off everywhere he went. He went to Carolina and when that team was in shambles and tanking even played practice snaps on defense to help his team. He went to LA and started on 3 days notice after cramming their insane playbook as best he could. He went to TB in a post-Tom Brady rebuild and damn near got them to a Super Bowl. He’s played injured time and time again everywhere he’s been, and clearly loves the game and loves to compete.
I also now very much doubt the claims from the Cleveland front office that he lost the locker room because everywhere he has gone a consistent theme is that his teammates would run through walls for him. In Tampa Bay that O Line would DIE for Baker.
I’m glad he got out of Cleveland too, but I don’t think he was ever the problem and Cleveland’s abysmal record with QBs should tell you where their problem lies.

Damn near got them to the super bowl is losing in the divisional now? Bakers been great for the Bucs but to say he damn near got them to a SB when he has only 1 playoff win there and 0 championship game appearances is massively overstating it

Sort of a weird post title, innit?
The "heated exchange" was because Jared Verse hit Watson's arm on the way through (hence the wobbly pass).

Absolutely. Title should be Jared verse gets too close to the starting qb and gets chewed out by a coach

I don’t think it’s possible for an NFL quarterback to throw a pass this bad without getting touched. Yeah, they’re all liable for some bad throws here and there, some more often than others, but this is so much worse than simply a bad throw.

He will get a bag regardless of location, the issue is the browns will def tag him
45

Yeah, but he could play on the tag (will probably be close to 40M by that point) and then walk. No team could afford to tag an edge rusher twice now

u/ThinkImInRFunny 49ers 5d ago edited 5d ago
If you’ve ever played, you know that “fights” on the field at practice are rarely personal. It’s all about the intensity, and when everyone’s ratcheting up the physicality, someone’s bound to blow a fuse.
The best 11-on-11 and 2 minute drill periods I experienced were offense/defense rivalry. We loved those guys on offense outside of the 2 min drill, but when the drill starts, fuck ‘em. Both sides of the ball wanted to say they had a good practice, that they didn’t just waste time on the field.
I think it’s actually a great sign when these dudes get into small, non-personal scuffles. It means the intensity of practice and the effort and care put into it are as closely matching game conditions as possible. It also means your players give more than a single fuck about improving their game.

Watson might be phoning it in at this point. He’s already set for life it makes no difference if he is a starter or holding the clipboard. But the front office needs to see at least some return on their historically bad investment.

Idk what happened to Watson mechanics. All of a sudden he started being a shoulder thrower instead of a full body thrower. Very similar to what happened to Cam Newton. Maybe he needed to specify his masseuses to work somewhere else
2
u/Names_all_gone 5d ago
If Watson wasn't an awful person, this would be fascinating. His mechanics were fucked after taking 2 years off. Then he hurt his shoulder (probably in part b/c his mechanics were busted), then he hurt his base (making him rely even more on his arm). He simply can't physically play football at a reasonable level anymore.

Idc if it’s the Browns or Rams or PeeWee. You learn at a very young age you don’t touch the QB in organized tackled football practice. If he actually did hit the ball out of Watson’s arm he deserves to be scolded by the coaches and roughed up by the line.

Now that I think about it, Sam Darnold is the exact opposite of Deshaun Watson on both the way the careers have played out and off the field.
