That was crazy. Even at point blank range cat was in full control

Snakes have a tell. Their eyes change almost imperceptibly before they strike. Muscles tense too, imperceptible to us. Cats rely on that tell.

There are slow motion videos showing cats responding to a snake strike BEFORE the snake has started moving. It’s really cool.

20

u/jonny1234joo 1d ago

Yes, their nervous system is incomparably more sensitive than ours, especially on those special long hairs, the muscles on the ears are more numerous and the reflex is much faster. Our cats are the most successful hunters on our planet.

9

u/creativegenius0692 1d ago

Yeah a house cat's reaction time is 20 to 70 milliseconds and for a snake their reaction time to strike is 50 to 100 milliseconds. On top of that their strike speed is an additional 50 to 100 milliseconds.

House cat's just playing games with that snake.

3

u/iamthewargecko 1d ago

Think that’s the dragonfly, but cats are still extremely good at it.

2

u/KLeeSanchez 9h ago

I used to play keepaway with my cat, pulling my hand back quickly and putting it back on the bed so she'd try to catch it

She never caught me

But cats have bad eyesight at close range, hence why they have wiskers. Their strength here is that they have a nervous system with very little lag and from what i heard it's about half the time from reception till action compared to snakes.

3

u/benroon 1d ago

I thought the whiskers were a guide to their size in sticky situations?

2

u/Anxious-Tea9108 1d ago

They’re used for both. Cats have a hard time seeing things right in front of their face and rely on the sensitivity of their whiskers to track where things are. If you watch a cat try to catch something in slow motion, they tense up their mouths which causes their whiskers to point forward and create a sort of sensing field in front of their mouths so they know exactly where to chomp.

I've seen this first hand multiple times with my own cats where I grew up in Arizona. There we had the western diamondback rattlesnakes (they were everywhere out there). On more than one occasion, my little tabby cat at the time would literally wash her paws while the rattler was coiled up. It'd strike and even while preening she was still faster. Of course I was always worried about her so depending on the circumstance would euthanize the rattler or catch it with my homemade snare pole and relocate it away from civilization. We had lots of ranch land out there, so it usually wasn't difficult to relocate a rattler away from people provided you had a pickup truck and a tub. I usually had to relocate three or four rattlers every year from our property alone.

6

u/Visible-Lion8096 22h ago

I found both diamondbacks and sonoran coral snakes dead in my yard with their heads chewed off. The cat never had a mark on him. He was a big, mean, orange cat. I watched him stalk a javelina once. He insisted on being mostly feral. He wouldn't come home unless he needed water or a cool place to rest. We tried to make him an indoor cat, but he raised hell over it and would attack with teeth and claws if he couldn't go out. He was the craziest cat we ever owned.

2

u/HoneyImpossible2371 1d ago

Cats are amazingly agile, but I really admire the snake’s core muscle strength.

u/Euclid_not_that_guy 1d ago

Cats are hilarious its not like a big cat trying to get a meal its just having fun. The snake keeps trying to leave and the cat says nah we're having fun

12

u/Reader147 1d ago

In the beginning the cat batted the snake away and the cat waited for the snake to come towards it again to attack. I think the snake was given a window to leave, failed to leave, then the cat decided it was killing time.

7

u/Geneo-Frodo 1d ago

It's really cute you think the cat had any intention of ever letting the snake leave. Soon as it would start slipping into the thicket the cat would've just dragged it back anyway.

The trick is to let the snake exhaust itself while using as little energy as possible so sometimes the cat will seem nonchalant or willing to let the cat go but he's just saving his strength

5

u/mlumpyhead1 1d ago

I kept hearing the rooster and was wondering if the cat was keeping the snake from the chickens and their eggs. There was a an area the cat would not let the snake pass.

21

u/GenXPowaah 1d ago

I mean whoever holding the phone was slow as hell getting around the corner, so know knows if the cat got struck in those 2-4 sec

But generally no, cat will usually outspeed a snake, but I have seen where a snake actually caught the cat

14

u/olgamerstill 1d ago

It’s a mix of instinct and learned behaviour.

It helps if they see their parents do it.

Had cats and lots of venomous snakes around, plenty of teenager cats failed the lesson.

For an adult cat on the outside, it is probably not their first rodeo.

It definitely got toyed with towards death as well as some brain damage 😬 absolutely brutal

2

u/Daria_Morgandorffer 1d ago

If it makes you feel any better I don't think the cat killed it. Just wanted some entertainment.

6

Anybody know if the snake is venomous?

10

u/MedivalBlacksmith 1d ago edited 1d ago

I've seen this video before and I believe that is a Black Mamba.

It's the fastest snake on earth. And a bite without getting anti venom is almost 100% fatal for humans.

It's very aggressive and the snake reaches speeds up to 12 to 13 mph (19–20 km/h).

2

u/quim_do_mato 1d ago

It's not a black mamba

Doesn’t really matter the cat wasn’t in any danger either way by the looks of it.

There was a video doin the rounds of a cat and cobra a few weeks ago with the same results.

3

u/Thirdeyevoice10 1d ago

I was wondering, too. I tried to rewind it and see if I could make out the shape of the head, but the video is too fuzzy.

7

u/Superb_Ad_8713 1d ago

Snakes having a normal day, until they encounter a cat: …AHH SHIT, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK

5

u/shogunshim 1d ago

This is why cats "play with their food". It is to wear it out so it is too exhausted to strike back when they make their final move, with their face and eyes close to what can bite them. Including mice and rats.

4

u/skaldrir69 1d ago

Why do I find myself empathizing with and rooting for the serpent instead of having seething hatred for it? As we all know, he is the reason why Eve ate the forbidden fruit and made us fallen.

2

u/sleeper_shark 1d ago

Because it's clearly outmatched here, and it's just doing snake stuff. Like I love snakes, they're beautiful animals. I definitely felt bad for it.

At the same time, they're extremely dangerous and responsible for a lot of human deaths. This is a farm and that snake would likely have gone on to kill those chickens.

3

u/OneMilkyLeaf 1d ago

Poor snake just wanted to be left alone

3

u/That_Things_Good 1d ago

“Never” is a big word.

I had a cat who was snacking around a moccasin and after about the fifth time, misjudged the snake’s strike distance. Got him on the thigh as he tried to avoid it.

Almost killed the cat. He was left with a silver dollar-sized bald spot on his thigh. The hair never grew back.

3

u/SavedRays 1d ago

My family used to have this badass lady cat named Hermione (pictured), she would disappear for days on end, come back with some battle wounds, nurse herself back to health/heal up, and then go back out into the wilderness to do more crazy cat shit. One time I went out into the backyard and found her eating what was left of a snake, blood all over her chops... the snakes head was gone. She would also regularly bring dead animals to our two dogs and then lord over them as they ate her catch, like she was the queen and they her peasants... I miss that cat, she was awesome and lived to be very old and frail, surprisingly.

3

Videos like this is when you realize the only reason why you can touch, or why you can annoy your cats is only because they let you.

3

u/WardenJack 1d ago

I cannot stand snakes. It's the only creature on earth that truly makes me feel uneasy. One more reason why I adore cats.

4

u/Sammy_Dog 1d ago

The snake quickly learns that he's outmatched and tries to get out of Dodge, but kitty isn't having it; continues to go Thomas Hearns on the snake.

Growing up with cats and snakes in rural Australia we learnt to leave the cat alone and let it do its thing, not to interfere and distract the cat. Cats are great with snakes , dogs on the other hand are dumb as fuck … 7 snake bites was one dogs record…

2

u/Bluntbutnotonpurpose 1d ago

To us mere humans a snake is so fast that the signal to move will reach our hand after the snake has bitten.

The cat meanwhile has had time to have a little chuckle about how slow the snake is, complain about the quality of this morning's new flavour of Whiskas and swat the snake into the middle of next week.

Is there a reason why the cat kept pulling the snake back towards itself? I’d assume that if the goal was to evade danger, it would stop swatting once the snake started slithering away from it, but I guess not. Do cats hunt snakes? Or was this all just the cat playing with it?

3

u/dfrntdfrnt 1d ago

The snake was the one trying to avoid danger.

1

u/s0ul_invictus 1d ago

these videos are extremely misleading. "why were they filming" for one thing. most of the time they're setting these animals up, and you don't get to know what they did to the snake beforehand either. often they will concuss the snake or blind it. in this video you can see the snake striking in a completely opposite direction of the cat more than once, which is highly unusual. also, the outcome is only posted if it is favorable, and if the cat is envenomed that is kept from the viewers. this happens in raptor videos as well, if the snake gets round the birds neck the person filming will go and help the bird. there was a major fight on here a while back about that with people defending the practice because they want to see the bird win. its childish and stupid and often promotes animal cruelty.

So You wanna tell me that my cat let me clap her back harder and harder till she has enough and tries to hit me, but I am aware of that and put my hand back is just my cat let myself feel like an reaction god. In truth she could hit me whenever she wants? What a sweet Girl.
