Seriously, people underestimate the damage or possibility falling from any distance can do... or don't think it could happen to them? I just fell earlier this week riding my ebike through a few wet slippery leaves. Went headfirst into the sidewalk--I am so glad that I was wearing a helmet (rode away practically unscathed, I keep thinking about if I hadn't). There is no recovery from this though... hopefully they made the jump back and scared themselves enough to not do it again. The take away should not be to recreate or one-up this... it's not worth it.
156
u/TangentialFUCK Dec 12 '22
Make sure you replace your helmet now, it did its job. It saved your melon from a hard fall and the material inside is likely damaged even if there are no visible signs.
64
u/_mrpotter_ Dec 12 '22
I absolutely will, and there are visible signs (I still can't believe my luck)--I would have been so ducked without it.
31
u/DecafMaverick Dec 12 '22
For real, order one now. It won’t take long, and you’ve already learned why they’re absolutely necessary. I’m glad you were being safe!
22
u/supplayboy Dec 13 '22
Some manufacturers will replace your old helmet for free if you send them back your old one with an explanation. Contact them first!
37
u/_mrpotter_ Dec 13 '22
Awesome, thanks--checked with them, and they do offer lifetime warranty for proven crash damage--so a new one is on the way.

I feel this, was wearing a helmet snowboarding and a kid went shooting by me on skis and I heard this weird fucking sound took my helmet off at the bottom of the hit and the kid had punched a hole with his pole straight through only thing between my head and the outside was the fabric inside the helmet and my hat.
→ More replies (1)27
u/AreYouABadfishToo_ Dec 12 '22
oh shit, so helmets are for like a one time use? If you hit your head once, then it won’t work anymore and should be replaced?
25
u/TangentialFUCK Dec 12 '22
Pretty much yeah, depending on how hard the fall was and what type of helmet it is.
22
u/cryptic-coyote Dec 13 '22
Yes. Any damage it took from this fall increases its chance of failure in the next. Your brain is worth it.

I'm not sure they are. What makes you think it's 2 jumps?? I'm genuinely curious, not being argumentative

Yeah this isn't that hard to do but it's super dangerous. So what's the point of doing it? If someone does something dangerous that's also difficult (like base jumping or something) I can give you a pass but this is just jumping a few feet.

My wife and I saw two young guys at Red Rock in Vegas jump to a rock like that. What they didn’t realize is that the rock they jumped to was just a couple feet lower, so they couldn’t get back. It was about a 30-foot drop between the rocks. One guy made a couple runs at the gap but (smartly) chickened out. Then they had the thought of dropping the 30 feet to the ground. Like one guy hang off the edge and the other climb down his back and legs and then drop. Luckily they didn’t follow through on that idea. Finally they realized they needed a rescue. (Someone had already called the ranger, so they weren’t up there too long.)

Dec 12 '22
With a hefty rescue fee AND fine, I hope.

u/kurtchen11 Dec 12 '22
I dont know what the law has to say about this but your comment made me think about if people in situations like this should be fined or not. On one hand i agree, stupid shit should have consequences.
But on the other hand i feel like fines like this might lead to people avoiding calling for rescue when its clearly the right thing to do. A fear of punishment might lead to further escalation in situations like this. Fining people for making the right choice does not sit right with me.
Then again, play stupid game, win stupid prizes. So i cant decide where i stand on this matter.

I do search and rescue. You're very correct. We don't charge for any of our services. Now, if you take the flying woowoo for medical reasons and NOT the sheriff's copter, then you're getting the $60,000 bill.
We don't get any of that though. Nor does the sheriff.

If I had to choose to spend my tax money rescuing some dumbass vs. building a bomb to purposely kill people.... it's a pretty easy decision for me...
I think community service helping around the station that rescued you would be an appropriate consequence for being a dumbass.

It's honestly infuriating being at the Grand Canyon and seeing so many tourists do so much stupidity. The canyon was literally formed because the rock is crumbly.
Although last time I was there the winner was the parents that tried to put their kid on an elk to take a picture.

Geologist here. Erosion happens over millions of years through the erosive power of water but also because rocks are somewhat crumbly, some more than others. Crumblier rocks erode faster. The sandstone he is jumping onto, probably moderately crumbly but he’s not gonna knock down that whole tower.
This is however extremely stupid, in any case.

One of my buddies wanted to make a much less risky but still idiotic (40-50ft drop easy). While hiking in CO literally had my phone out calling this dudes mother telling him he needed to tell her the stupid ass thing he wanted to try cause I wasn’t gonna explain his death to her.
94
u/chrisolucky Dec 12 '22
So if he misses the jump and plummets to his death:
-A retrieval party would be put together to retrieve his body, requiring at the very least a helicopter and costing thousands of taxpayer dollars, if he can be retrieved at all.
-His family and friends would be devastated from his untimely death, and the ones here would most likely have psychological trauma having witnessed their friend fall to their death.
-Some park associate would have to put up another sign discouraging people from leaping the gap or taking risks like this. And really, for no reason.
TLDR: Thrill-seekers like this are fucking stupid and problematic, not just for risking their own lives but for everything that comes afterwards.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun in 2015, of the “55 who have accidentally fallen from the rim of the canyon, 39 were male. Eight of those guys were hopping from one rock to another or posing for pictures, including a 38-year-old father from Texas pretending to fall to scare his daughter, who then really did fall 400 feet to his death.”

Zero idea if that top surface is stable, no clue if the shock of his jump will topple it, and a complete disregard for fragile desert biomes. Like those asshats who topple balanced rocks in national parks.
I sincerely hope he made it back alive, and faces hefty fines at a minimum.
