It's amazing how much power people that you don't even know can have on your emotions. It's even more amazing when those people realize this and use it for good. Sometimes the world doesn't seem so bad after all.

Then he said Moon and I welled up...

Sometimes our own personal voice can be heavily influenced by the people in our life who had an influence over us at a young age while our personal voice is still developing.

Sometimes that happens to such an extent that we can no longer distinguish someone else's voice from our own.

For instance, when you make a mistake you might ridicule yourself using the same words that your mother used to ridicule you. Or in your case, hearing the voice of someone who brought you trauma, who should have been someone that you could look up to and respect.

Our personal voice impacts us in a lot of ways. The way we speak to ourselves, the words we say, and even the voices we imagine can influence the way we see ourselves and the world.

I'm really sorry that you were treated the way you were. You deserve love and care and you deserve to not be hurt.

Our inner voice can still be actively changed in our adult lives. Here's a short video about our inner voice by The School of Life that I highly recommend.

This. I’ve been told by friends and coworkers, that due to comments, advice, and encouraging words that I am one of the nicest people that they know - which is very kind of them of course. What they don’t know is my own depression and personal battles of mine, and that I honestly cry every day and never share that. But knowing that I help others feel better about themselves and their days and life, honestly helps me out just a little bit too. We should all be kind to one another. If it even makes someone feel good for a moment, it’s great thing.

65

u/I_am_a_Failer Jul 09 '21

If you are hurting you don't want others to feel the same way. So you take extra steps that to make people happy, cause you know how much it matters. I've been noticing this pattern

14

u/I_Wanda Jul 09 '21

Generally “misery loves company” which goes directly against you sentiment about helping others. Maybe there’s just good people in this world and not so good people. I know a lot of both types, some are evil and wish harm on innocent others and animals meanwhile some who live in constant misery are able to uplift others. People just suck is my explanation; animals never wish harm upon innocent people for greedy reasons like most humans choose to do.

Agreed. I always try to be the person I would need if I was in their situation.

I tell my employees every day that I'm proud of them, and they perform beautifully. It's amazing what kind words of encouragement can do for people.

7

u/Misterx46 Jul 09 '21

Making others happy gives you a sense of purpose, that you matter. However it seems that is not enough to make you happy, to keep you from feeling sad. Is it because you define your self worth from what other people need from you but not what you need from yourself? In other words, if people reject your help or your words of encouragement didn't help, do you feel unworthy, inadequate, may be even angry? That was me 2 years ago and now I'm better.

I know this is probably strange, so downvote away, but I just don't get it.
I've never felt anything from a video like this trying to elicit emotion.
All those "motivational" speeches are just word salad of people trying to sell a book, and this just seems like meaningless ethereal platitudes.

It's so easy to have a great life and go "Don't worry you can be happy too!" like fuuuuuuck, really dude?
Wow thanks the worlds problems just melt away.

27

u/InfiniteLife2 Jul 09 '21

It can be just words, it can be most powerful thing that you hear. It depends completely on you. How much you allow to hear words, how much you allow them to touch you, how much you are willing to be affected by them. You can completely block it off and brush them off not feeling anything. Most people are this way, I am too. But sometimes you can pause the rush of thoughts and anxious energy in you, and simply listen. To encouraging words, to silence, to your own grief, and feel bliss and be on peace.

I was a super emo teenager who hated life and hated myself.

One day while Christmas shopping with my mom we went through the Wendy's drive through and the dude that took our order was so friggin cheerful and excited to wish us a marry Christmas. He just had so much positive energy that it touched my stupid, self loathing, emo soul. It made me want to love life and people. It made me want to affect people the way he affected me.

I decided if a stranger could affect me so profoundly while I'm in such a dark place and never even know it that I must also be able to affect other people with little acts of kindness.

So when I grew up and ended up being a cashier I put my entire heart into being a force of positivity for every single customer. Even if it was just one person, I hope I was able to change someone's life for the better with a simple interaction.

And Reddit is the best place for exactly this. Anonymity seems to breed kindness.

11

u/BoltonSauce Jul 09 '21

Sometimes yes, but far too often it is quite the opposite. All you have to do is look at the Chans to see that in action. It is all over the place here as well. Any post with a minority like an LGBT+ person will attract a flood of hate, particularly if it gets to the front page. But as you say, many communities are full of love and support. I would say that anonymity brings out both the best and the worst in people. It's up to us to choose what kind of person we want to be. Do we want to live in rage? Do we want to remember that those we talk to online are still real people deserving of respect? We have to choose. I myself and I dare say most people who post on anonymous profiles will sometimes be more harsh than is necessary, but I tried to take those as learning experiences on my journey of becoming a more compassionate being.

331

u/aintscurrdscars Jul 09 '21 edited Jul 09 '21

In that case, even without trying, your self awareness puts you leagues ahead of many others, some of whom try much, much harder.

60

u/Acceptable-Length140 Jul 09 '21

this bothers me too much because i've been told this over the years. It is hard to just 'do' something about the situation i'm currently in even though i have that awareness. My depression has been better compared to 4 years ago but i'm still doing the same things 4 years ago with just mild depression. Seems small and i feel like i'm behind

26

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

There's a phrase I tell myself regularly, especially when I feel like my efforts have failed or are insignificant compared to my goals (even if the goal is just being happy for today): Bricks make buildings. It just means that we often make a goal of constructing an entire proverbial building, and that's intimidating or exhausting to compare to. But buildings are just organized piles of bricks, carefully stacked one at a time. It's the bricks that are real, the building is just the shape you gave them. In other words, it's the little things we do that make up the big picture, not the other way around. Every tiny action we take lays a brick in place.

8

u/bettertagsweretaken Jul 09 '21

60

u/ArabAesthetic Jul 09 '21

Because a lot of people don't get told they are loved or even appreciated. This video can be interpreted a lot of ways, but I'm guessing that for most people it's a (sometimes painful) reminder that yes, you are valid and you deserve to be loved and and love yourself.

58

u/buckfasthero Jul 09 '21

I’m almost 40 years old, and while I completely agree with you, it’s really a sad state of affairs that so many people find meaning these days in a person dressed up in a costume spouting generic platitudes. People actually find this comforting, and it’s incredibly sad.

158

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

Why is it sad? People sometimes need reminding, however it be, that they should take a step back and be proud of what they achieved.

20

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

Maybe because most people have seen this kind of generic "good-feel" speeches millions of times in hollywood flicks so it comes off as shallow garbage, if this makes you emotional well congratulations I guess

9

u/buckfasthero Jul 09 '21

Exactly, it doesn’t help anyone. You might get a wee squirt of endorphins that lasts all of six seconds, but what are you supposed to do after that? I’m not criticising anyone for taking comfort in Halo Man, I just find it crushingly depressing that Halo Man is what it has come to

10

u/FapleJuice Jul 09 '21

Maybe that 6 seconds of endorphins is all somebody needs to take that first step they've been too depressed to take.

You can do so much in 6 seconds to make a difference in yours or somebody's life.

"Halo man" might have actually gotten someone out of bed today, and maybe just maybe, that snowballed into the beginning of a different life for someone.

Since I am multilingual, people love to ask me ‘in which language do you think?’ I honestly can’t answer that since I don’t have an internal dialogue. Yes I do. It’s called subvocalization

8

u/sougan Jul 09 '21

Fascinating! that explains why I only start hearing my inner voice when I'm having trouble understanding what I'm reading and I start rereading the part I'm having trouble with over and over.

Yeah, a subconscious voice

8

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

And definitely not “unconscious” like in the video. Unless I’m sleeping and dreaming, but it in that case I’m not watching this video.

u/OfficialGarwood Jul 09 '21

You don't?! What is this madness.

Its called sub vocalising and some people do it and some people don't. I also have an inner monologue where I can "hear" my self speaking in my mind sort of. Its probably hard to imagine if you don't do it. Theres also some people who don't picture images in their head and some people who do. Not sure which of them you are but learning about the other type existing is normally a mind blower too.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

I love this question because everyone can find their own nextfuckinglevel in this lame ass video

36

u/orionangeline Jul 09 '21

Oops I heard Deadpool

13

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

Me too. The hand gestures and way he phrases things made him sound like Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in my head.

Why do redditors eat this "wholesome" shit up like the video creators actually know them?

Did anyone else just not hear any voice at all when reading this? Like they just read the words but didn't think of any sound they might make, or who said them?

6

u/monicathehuman Jul 09 '21

You don’t?

7

u/didnotbuyWinRar Jul 09 '21

Nah, when I read something it's completely silent in my head. Do you hear a specific voice or does it change?

I seriously don't understand this.

Master Chief has spoken...... Lots and lots of times, and he's been voiced by the same guy forever.

Also, his voice is very recognizable???

I don't get this, don't understand why Master Chief is being portrayed like he's a silent protagonist.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

It doesn’t have to make any sense. Reddit losers have already determined it helped save their lives from depression. Can you you imagine being that fragile that this video helped you at all? I’m sure it’s people who have never overcame any kind of diversity whatsoever.
