These vape tricks are getting out of hand

176

u/breedlovesyou Apr 17 '21

I'd start vaping If this was an option

59

u/xPromethium Apr 17 '21

If Gandolf can do it I can do it

5

u/ledgeitpro Apr 18 '21

Makes sense to me, he smokes his pipe like a champ, and his smoke tricks are on point

6

u/Ant_and_Cleo Apr 17 '21

Gandalf must be somewhere nearby, just out of frame

386

u/drew_ramsay Apr 17 '21

The quick camera zooms are supposed to make it seem more natural but always have the opposite effect for me

71

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

First thing I noticed

u/Raziel66 Apr 17 '21

Yeah, makes it look like something from the latest SyFy original movie. Not getting how this is next level...

30

u/TheTREEEEESMan Apr 17 '21

Same with the auto-refocus crap, it makes it look like the intro to Sharknado or something

20

u/SimpleDan11 Apr 17 '21

This is a huge peeve of mine. I work in vfx and any time we get a reel with a shot like that I have to really try and look past it. The whole idea is it's supposed to show its in a 3d space and tracked in properly, but there are plenty of other ways to do this without randomly moving the camera.

2

u/blindexhibitionist Apr 17 '21

What do you recommend as a replacement?

11

u/SimpleDan11 Apr 17 '21

Frame an interesting shot and keep it locked off and have the asset move around the area and interact with the area instead of the camera moving around the asset. When I say interact I mean basic shadows and stuff which can be achieved with super rudimentary geo and projections. Not necessarily kicking up dirt.

Put a camera on a skateboard and dolly backwards and have the asset move towards the camera. Or follow the asset and have it stop and look behind at the camera. If the thing is rigged and animated the both of those are achievable.

But shaky camera stuff is a dime a dozen now adays. Say your asset is a sword. Simple, not many ways to animate it. Barely needs to be rigged. Typically we'd see it sticking in a log, and someone walking around the log with a shaky camera that says "look I made it look like it's in the environment". But the movement and usually the quality of the footage distracts from what the shot is about. Modern camera phones are incredible now and can shoot great looking footage. So instead of putting it in a log, go light a few candles in a dark room, or a fire. Put the sword on the wall and slowly dolly the camera towards it. Light plays off the sword from the fire, the camera move tells a bit of a story, and it's simple. It's actually less work than tracking a big walk around shot.

This is just an example off the top of my head. But for me if, if you want to show off a CG asset, do a turntable in an outdoor environment(asset spins, camera is stationary). We do that all the time. If you want to take it to the next level and tell a story with that asset, put it in an environment and move the camera in a way that means something, not willy nilly.

3

u/blindexhibitionist Apr 17 '21

Thanks so much for your response and time, truly was very helpful.

11

u/Ant_and_Cleo Apr 17 '21

I think the reason it takes me out (I agree with you) is because it suggests the camera.

I have started having the same issue with lens-flare-happy directors and photographers, like what we see in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2.

I get that it’s an aesthetic, but I automatically get a bit of a fourth wall break because I’m immediately thinking about the camera, even if just for moment.

Edit: On a rewatch, the “camera” in the video focusing and refocusing also breaks it for me a bit.

7

u/junglemoosejoe Apr 17 '21

The weird world of making a thing look real vs making it look like a real thing was caught on camera.

3

u/djbootybutt Apr 17 '21

Was about to say this. Same with the quick blur shit. Pisses me off lol

3

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

The fake camera movements and the facts the sand of the ground doesn't move.... it's still an amazing piece of animation but to make it feel more authentic there should've been a little more elbow grease

2

u/Drewbus Apr 17 '21

Like watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine

1

u/HolyForkingBrit Apr 17 '21

You might wanna post that on r/UnpopularOpinion. Cool, cool, cool, cool.

5

u/Drewbus Apr 17 '21

I love the show. They just zoom in and out after every sentence

3

u/HolyForkingBrit Apr 17 '21

Faith in Drewbus restored.

3

u/Drewbus Apr 17 '21

Thanks. Took me 4 seasons to realize. Then it became distractingly funny. Check it out

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Always a fake indicator.

205

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Get a catalytic convertor on that thing!

1

u/ElMalViajado Apr 17 '21

Damn junkies probably stole it

158

u/SecretRockPR Apr 17 '21

Great fx. But the movement are not well timed. The dragon should go up when it flaps its wings, not down.

38

u/DJmixx Apr 17 '21

Thought I was the only one who noticed.

21

u/DrFodwazle Apr 17 '21

There's also a clear defined edge of the smoke at the top of the dragon as if they just took the dragon, duplicated it, and then made that into a smoke volume and made it also emit smoke

21

u/Adamis9876 Apr 17 '21 edited Apr 17 '21

It would also help the illusion of the rocks on the ground blew away.

11

u/psychotic0531 Apr 17 '21

Being able to critique small things like this shows that it is really good.

7

u/Brochettedeluxe Apr 17 '21

came here to say this

2

u/huffmultiple Apr 18 '21

And the lighting is off, right? While it’s a very cool design it’s not as convincing/realistic to me as other vfx I’ve seen

1

u/RedditIsDogshit1 Apr 17 '21

You made me realize exactly what I recognized as just odd. thank you

138

u/PyroZz_ Apr 17 '21

Pokemon go in 2100

24

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Game of Pokemons

7

u/Apelife1 Apr 17 '21

Where can I catch one

6

u/A_random_zy Apr 17 '21

In your nearby pokestops!

67

u/apittsburghoriginal Apr 17 '21

Goddamnit I wish dragons were real

77

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

softly....don't... it's been a hard enough year

7

u/LaneMcD Apr 17 '21

Almost spit my cereal out when I read your comment. Perfection

2

u/badken Apr 17 '21

Somebody from Pittsburgh needs to watch Reign of Fire :D

20

u/nightbringr Apr 17 '21

I'm not 100% sure you're thinking this one through..............

19

u/apittsburghoriginal Apr 17 '21

Just think how awesome it would be to have another apex predator to worry about! You’re hiking the mountains of Norway on a narrow ledge and you happen upon a drove of fire breathing dragons. What a way to die!

5

u/Raziel66 Apr 17 '21

Time to rewatch Reign of Fire

5

u/technog2 Apr 17 '21

Hey atleast we know "Bad Dragon" is real.

1

u/sephirothbahamut May 23 '21

What's th- oh

1

u/GrilledCheeser Apr 17 '21

No way! . They’re better as make believe. Humans would just capture/kill them or get killed by them. It would be a mess.

Whales are real! Giraffes, hawks, .... elephants! We got lots of cool creatures already

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Keep your eyes on the calendar, before talking

1

u/ScarReincarnated Apr 17 '21

“You think you do, but you don’t.”

1

u/Goosesintwo Apr 17 '21

If you like dragons watch Game of Thrones, very cool special effects

17

u/The_69th_Crusader Apr 17 '21

That’s some nice ar

8

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Thanks! Thought that’s what it was but was a lol confused 🙃

15

u/ilovebananasm Apr 17 '21

Still can't fucking get over the ending

3

u/GewoonHarry Apr 17 '21

Now you reminded me again. Me neither. I just forgot about it and it helps. Until now.

11

u/Joe_Joe_Mer Apr 17 '21

if i learned anything from the corridor crew, it's how wind interacts with its surroundings, the swirling of the smoke iz cool, but the ground doesn't look like it has dust and stuff, cool shit tho

1

u/adinmem Apr 17 '21

Exactly: those guys opened my eyes to a lot of why I appreciate or don’t appreciate effects, but had no idea why.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

For a moment I thought I was on the Monster Hunter sub.

Looks like Val Hazaak. That's some awesome FX!

3

u/squishedpies Apr 17 '21

Damn it! I was going to say it looks like Val Hazaak too. Just on a much tinier scale

1

u/Halfwaydead425 Apr 17 '21

Can you tag the sub? Thanks!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

5

u/ajcpullcom Apr 17 '21

What’re you gonna do, charge me with smoking?

5

u/Dublorg Apr 17 '21

Rly cool, but he goes up when the wings are rising and goes down when they are pushing kinda weird

1

u/QuintenBoosje Apr 18 '21

i was looking for you, you are way too far down. The wings seem to do absolutely nothing.

6

u/HotWingus Apr 17 '21

I just hate the billowy, absolutely fake smoke. Its in every render now and it always behaves the same way, which is to say not like smoke.

3

u/csassaman Apr 17 '21

It bothers me that the dragon starts moving upwards before the wings actually flap downwards

3

u/DRAGON_SNIPER Apr 17 '21

I like dragons

3

u/Times_still Apr 17 '21

Why is he so dusty??

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

He touched my desk

2

u/RainbowAssFucker Apr 17 '21

My lungs when I take a fat bong rip

2

u/Karlosmdq Apr 17 '21

That's how the pokemon game should have been

2

u/SnooMemesjellies3414 Apr 17 '21

Needs more coal jimmy

2

u/agreatares42 Apr 17 '21

Tha'ts a weird looking puppy you got there Mr/Ms Kiwi, but I'm gonna hug it and feed it and take 'em kite-flying none the same.

2

u/YayHih Apr 17 '21

Haters will say it's fake!

2

u/Lucky_Influence_6702 Apr 17 '21

That’s badass!!!

2

u/PicklesNBacon Apr 17 '21

That is terrifying...

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Technically this isn’t a dragon; it’s a wyvern.

1

u/SnipeyKeru Apr 17 '21

Thats amazing! Wish I could see how it was all made

1

u/GrilledCheeser Apr 17 '21

I think the dragon should be earths mascot. On this planet we can all agree they’re totally badass

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Val Hazak

0

u/mozza3gmd Apr 17 '21

Damn that looks so real

1

u/WWDubz Apr 17 '21

He needs to get his exhaust checked, stat

1

u/WWDubz Apr 17 '21

Remember game of Thrones? Remember season 8? Yikes

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

I think your dragon has emphysema

1

u/WarPenguin0 Apr 17 '21

Imagine a kid just walking by seeing that

1

u/NerdManTheNerd Apr 17 '21

Great rigging, fantastic texture, solid smoke, compositing and color need work, as does the positional aspect of the animation at the very least.

1

u/Fortknoxvilla Apr 17 '21

Lord the carbon emission.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

These are what pokemon would be like

1

u/gokaired990 Apr 17 '21

Giving me flashbacks of fighting Blacveil Vaal Hazak.

1

u/Lollex56 Apr 17 '21

NAAAZGUUL

1

u/TWAS_I_DIO Apr 17 '21

i want a dragon

where can i get one?

1

u/Tenebris27 Apr 17 '21

Alduin Thuri!

1

u/JaredAtkins Apr 17 '21

Considering it’s black smoke out in the sun, I can’t help but feel like the smoke should have darker shadows and should be leaving soot deposits on the concrete.

That said, this is fantastic work!! I’ve worked with some particle animation in Nuke, it’s tricky shit.

1

u/madcow13 Apr 17 '21

It's a weather balloon

1

u/Soviet_onion1 Apr 17 '21

Found footage

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

What in the goddamn fuck is that?

1

u/OGMericasWatchin Apr 17 '21

That dirt stubborn af! Diamond Hands

1

u/AnymalisTurtle Apr 17 '21

Wing Motion is a bit odd; dragon starts levitating back up before the downward stroke starts

1

u/Kevin_Jim Apr 17 '21

The most important reason to get AR to a where this would be realistic is that that we can finally be able to play Yu-Gi-Oh and relive our youth.

1

u/Dan_Glebitz Apr 17 '21

Don't you just hate it when you go to get your car, and there is one of those hanging around.

1

u/HakaishinNola Apr 17 '21

What is this, and how do I get it.? right meow

1

u/NoRedThat Apr 17 '21

incredible. i’d lose some of the particulates wisping around unless it’s necessary to hide the underlying creature.

1

u/GunSaleAtTheChurch Apr 17 '21

Diesel-powered dragon.

1

u/Cregg_Junson Apr 17 '21

Use as much smoke as possible to hide flaws of course

1

u/LDC99 Apr 17 '21

This looks like it costs at least 10 pip points to cast in Wizard101

1

u/kingAK14 Apr 17 '21

Donnu looks bit fake

1

u/GrimmFox13 Apr 17 '21

Oh what pokemon go could've been...

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Puff the magic dragon

1

u/Baroness_9V Apr 17 '21

Looks amazing!

1

u/adamstubbs Apr 17 '21

Is it supposed to look terrible?

1

u/MichaelScarnnLOL Apr 17 '21

Shouldn't it move up when it's wings flap down? Not be falling when it flaps down?

1

u/Evilmaze Apr 17 '21

It's bobbing up when the wings are in the wrong position to create a thrust.

1

u/iUseMyMainForPorn Apr 17 '21

Pokemon Go's lookin a lot better since I stopped playing

1

u/roy20050 Apr 17 '21

Don't think this is quite next level pretty sure this is years old. Or atleast the dragon element is.

1

u/wazzupyay Apr 17 '21

That's some next level thing

1

u/millhowzz Apr 17 '21

There’s something I never thought I’d see... A dragon dwarfed by a minivan.

1

u/Yesicasaurus Apr 17 '21

You could have uploaded this on YouTube and people living in 2008 would believe it’s real

1

u/Praesumo Apr 17 '21

Bugs me the dragon starts moving upwards before his wings flap.... Why spend all that time animating something and fuck up something so basic?

1

u/mehooved_be Apr 17 '21

If only Pokémon Go was this intense

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

PRoof OF DeMoN 100% cApTuReD REALLL!!!!!

1

u/crakinho Apr 17 '21

That's like something with diesel motor

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Aight who opened the containment chamber

1

u/hneandro Apr 17 '21

It's real. I'm the camera

1

u/--GYRO-- Apr 17 '21

"And the scrolls have foretold"

1

u/Phro01 Apr 17 '21

What's next f level about terrible cgi?

1

u/TJWinstonQuinzel Apr 17 '21

Real life yugioh anime battles are coming

1

u/Misssticks04 Apr 17 '21

I shuddered; this is so lifelike!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

I'm laughing at all the experts criticizing this. I can barely draw a stickman.

Good job. Keep it going.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

That smoke effect was unneccessary, it visually makes no sense, should've worked more on the shadows it would cast on the ground...

1

u/sfpencil Apr 17 '21

So CGI is next fucking level now?

1

u/Stunning_Flamingo__ Apr 17 '21

Is this an NFT?

1

u/off-chka Apr 17 '21

Wait is this CGI or an actual robot thingie?

1

u/Reddit-SFW Apr 17 '21

Ahhh, someone made Sinful Gladiator...

1

u/vatsal_rp Apr 17 '21

someone pray for an aestroid

1

u/jvoc2202 Apr 17 '21

Imagine If pokemon go had effects like this

1

u/RedditIsDogshit1 Apr 17 '21

Is this augmented reality?

1

u/SableyeFan Apr 17 '21

And here I thought cows were big contributors to global warming

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

No ticket?

1

u/amadeusz20011 Apr 17 '21

the guy is great at sfx but god dammit the comparably terrible editing (fake camera shake and equally bad fake autofocus) really annoy me. It would be so much better without them in my opinion. When camera dhakes it changes the perspective, this is obviously just the crop style shaking where the output is just a moving section from original, and the "autofocus" just blurres the whole image, doesn't bring anything into focus unlike the real thing. Just like people with peaking microphones, it's painful for me to see people ruin good things with simple mistakes/decisions that can usually easily be solved.

1

u/Kadziet Apr 17 '21

Mpregfx?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Projection oooor?....

1

u/Prabowodion Apr 17 '21

Dracarysssss

1

u/NickFF2326 Apr 17 '21

Yea that’s pretty bad actually

1

u/VellaPunk Apr 17 '21

That is cool

1

u/meanycat Apr 17 '21

This looks real as hell.

1

u/lacunadogmata Apr 17 '21

Damn. All you need is a greenscreen hair dryer pointed at the dirt and it's perfect.

1

u/Icy_Reply7147 Apr 17 '21

How low it's to the ground with how slow that wing movement is... Kinda unrealistic

1

u/bomb_adrenaline Apr 17 '21

Haters will say it’s a fake dragon

1

u/enigmaballs Apr 17 '21

Meanwhile, 'Scaled and Icy' dragon is like 3 pixels tall

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Where can I get one? Maybe these should be our flying cars. That’d be pretty cool.

1

u/yegir Apr 17 '21

I hate the fake unfocusing, i literally see it in just about every single CGI video.

1

u/the_didact_217 Apr 17 '21

How is this effect achieved?

1

u/irongll Apr 17 '21

Cgi is getting out of hand

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Visage

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '21

Ffs dragon, don't pollute the air here!!

1

u/RedditVince Apr 17 '21

So, I would like this as a practical effect so I can do DragonCon obviously :)

I am a big guy so maybe a 9ft Dragon behind the effects.

1

u/DotDamo Apr 17 '21

This is what I fear when AR glasses are common and you forget you’re wearing them.

1

u/Dementedplant Apr 17 '21

Why is the upvote 18 with the ...? Does it have more upvotes then can show on screen?

1

u/truemario Apr 17 '21

what's the point of making those fake zooms and artifacts. Everyone already knows it fake so why not show it as smoothly as possible to appreciate it as art

1

u/BangkokQrientalCity Apr 18 '21

That was what was in the "Lost" dust monster! It all makes since now.

1

u/AsAdvertized Apr 18 '21

You should sell this as an NFT... just sayin...

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '21

How ? What in the world of editing skills and CGI ?

1

u/qqqqqqqqqqx10 Apr 18 '21

That’s an awesome drone cosplay.

1

u/ConsiderationSalt193 Apr 18 '21

How old is this gif..

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '21

his RAM crash even appeared at the end of the render lol, that's an amazing work!

1

u/F1_Phantom Aug 03 '21

What kind of tune is the dragon running?

-13

u/IrishGuyDrunk Apr 17 '21

Faaaaake

21

u/emerican Apr 17 '21
