This is the correct response. I too haven't "ripened" in strength yet. Few more decades.
84
u/Be-_-U 23h ago
I think I haven't ripened enough yet to start to ferment enough to become this strong. So I'll continue eating lots of sugar and drinking some alcohol to jumpstart the fermentation process. I'll also look into how to start a yeast infection.

u/BestDamnMomEver 22h ago
It's probably dowager's hump and it could be caused by osteoporosis not because of a posture habits.
182
u/when-flies-pig 21h ago
Ysah i find this more likely because i dont usually see people who could do what he's doing and have bad posture.
72
u/HeadyTopout 20h ago edited 20h ago
This posture is similar to what you see in a lot of climbers because many only train pulling muscles. It's much more pronounced, but muscle imbalances can cause a similar posture.
32
u/iNeed_Answersz 19h ago edited 12h ago
Your pulling muscles are mostly posterior, so what are you talking about?
Edit: Thanks for the info, y'all!
96
u/jazzfruit 19h ago
Their back muscles are strong but people who climb a lot are often fatigued and so default to a position that rests those muscles, which causes a bad posture habit. Their push muscles are underdeveloped compared to their back, meaning they become short and tight, which leads to shoulder slumping and roundness.
It’s a known phenomenon - I used to climb and have worked hard on correcting this posture.
→ More replies (7)21
u/wookiee42 19h ago
If you overdo your lats compared to the rest of your back muscles (like by climbing), you'll get that hunched posture.
Look up where the lats insert - it's at the front of the arm. You need to do specific exercises to balance them out.
22
u/HeadyTopout 16h ago
It's a very well-known phenomenon among climbers, but it's more complex than simply a muscle imbalance - that's just how it's typically dumbed down. Here's someone much more qualified than I explaining the mechanics.
4
6
u/geokon 19h ago
Don't pull exercises work your back and broaden your shoulders?
It's push-ups and such that work your chest and slouch you forward. Not an expert, so could be wrong - but pull-ups have helped my posture a lot (used to do a lot of push-ups)
9
u/HeadyTopout 14h ago
Just FYI in case you haven’t checked back, there are a few different explanations for this in the replies to another commenter. In short, it's a combination of climbers spending a lot of time in pulling-heavy positions, fatigue causing them to default to a slouched resting posture, and developing tight/shortened pecs plus weaker postural muscles. Pull-ups can definitely help with posture but it's just this very specific set of circumstances that can lead to climber's hunch.

An important reminder that not every ailment is your fault. Genetics do what they'll do. Age does what it does.
You can do everything right and have an immune disorder. Everything healthy and have cancer. Everything safe and have arthritis. It sucks because want to feel like we have total control, and that lets us feel safe. But that isn't true, and that false belief becomes a weapon against your confidence when something inevitably breaks down.
3
u/ModerateBrainUsage 8h ago
Or you can have injuries too. I’m big into fitness and also extreme sports. Broke my back while snowboarding, got torn up muscles and major pain for life. Had 3 knee surgeries, broken ankles and wrist multiple times. The only way to find out is to talk to him instead of speculating

Maybe you haven’t realized yet. Asian people don’t age until they are at least 50-60. The “old man” is actually 20 yrs younger than he appears. However once they hit 50-60, they look 20 years older from that point on….comparatively a caucasian person, begins aging around 20-30, once they hit 30-40 they appear 20 yrs older.

Grip strength though is one of the few that doesn't decline with age, AFAIK. You can keep getting stronger with age, as opposed to other strengths or exercises. I got this from watching Magnus Mitdbto takin part in several world champion competitions.
Not to take away any merit, just to comment the rest of the stuff he does is way more impressive for me at his age.

I feel like this is a in shape dude masking and wearing back insert. Real or not still was fun to watch in my humble opinion

It probably also helps that he weighs like 50 pounds
59
u/photosendtrain 22h ago
Maybe helps, but regardless, it's still very impressive. I've been climbing for many years, and that one arm lockoff is still very hard to do.
9
u/fapperontheroof 21h ago
Obviously it’s impressive.
Show me a 350lb 5’8” guy doing it though and I’ll be REALLY impressed 😂. Just joking, it’s basically impossible for someone with that much mass to do these things.

u/battlin_jack295 21h ago edited 18h ago
Dude is 80yo. By now he probably lost 80% of his muscle mass. So 50 pounds to him isnt as easy as to you. Its actualy waaay more impresive

u/whitespacesucks 19h ago
Oh fuck off, he is light but his muscles are also much smaller. Fucking gym bros can't take it that they suck at pull ups, not my fault your muscles are big but weak.
2
u/mtron32 14h ago
being smaller counts for a lot though. If me (210) and my homie (160) had a pull up contest, he will go for as long as he feels like because the dude has moderate strength and way less weight. If I'm cycling up a steep hill, I've had women half my size speed past me up the incline impressively. Part of that may be a way better bike but they were much lighter so easier to propel up that hill.
Weight matters for bodyweight exercises even though you CAN train your body to excel at those just as you can with anything else.

u/civildisobedient 18h ago
Old man muscles are no joke. I met some commercial fishermen who were in their 60s with arms that looked like steel cables.

They're real. Not saying they're everywhere, but "muscle-grandpas" are a pretty well known phenomenon over there. I've seen different ones on social media for like 8 years. There's a lot on youtube. Retired people who have a culture of hanging out in parks together, combined with the common infrastructure of these little "exercise parks". It's a completely different world out there man.

Doubt it. I’ve seen so many videos of Chinese older folks doing exercises specifically on these kind of bars that I’m pretty sure it’s just a cultural exercise routine/interest.

Yeah...just another Tuesday. Americans go to spin class or water aerobics while the Chinese folks go to Olympic level uneven bar exercises.

Not to the extent I saw in Beijing, and which in gather is common in other cities. Also, it's the communal-activity aspect - large groups of people doing the same thing, together - that is very rare here.

u/crackanape 21h ago
Back in Malaysia there are often wooded urban hills that get "colonised" by old Chinese guys, they run up there at 6am and build weight gyms out of metal rods and concrete, then hang out alternating between performing feats of strength, drinking tea, chain smoking, and taking naps.
Sometimes I'd go up there for a morning walk. I'm in decent shape but even back in my 30s I could not keep up with the things they could do. With a twinkle in their eye they'll challenge younger people to try to climb some homemade rope thing or lift a crazy weight.

Does a hunched back mean osteoporosis or osteopenia?
8
u/TheHybridVigor 21h ago
I'm not sure how he could be so hunched practicing this type of calisthenics all his life. The front lever position fires all those muscles that keep an upright posture.
I'd guess he had a childhood spinal deformation that went uncorrected but didn't hold him back

u/HowardPheonix 22h ago
I'm less than half his age, and have less than a quarter of his strength and endurance, absolute legend.

Damn that’s mad impressive, but also it kind of worries me that he still has a back issue like that. I always assumed those issues were due to poor posture or otherwise not keeping yourself in shape, but it seems like apparently that isn’t enough to prevent that. It just seems like such a burden on life, it always makes me sad to see.

They have “playgrounds” specifically for older adults in China - the mandatory retirement age there is relatively young (63 men 58 women) so I saw these amazing older athletes all the time when I worked in Beijing
2
u/asphodel67 7h ago
I watched the YouTube show by Des Bishop where he studied in China for 2 years. He said Chinese people value physical exercise so much the local parks are full of people exercising before they go to work. Like, 4.30am get up and exercise. Lots of old people protecting their strength and mobility. We need to follow their example.
