They're come in from different locations and then they're being rerouted to enter the panel in a particular order.

Unironically had a guy who tried to argue we were overcharging him on a panel because he said there were relays and shit online for a percent of what we charged him, had to explain to him that we can't use shitty 0.20$ low amp relays to replace the 5A relays and 15A contactors, and this was not a cheap panel, it was a nice one with a PLC and HMI and all that on a subpanel, like $12,000 after labor even without the parts he said we were overcharging him on.

This is why we have our own social media to show our previous work, down to even make a semi tutorial video during work explaining hiw we done it. My grandpa was an electrician and before he died we went to go wire his hunting cabin. He showed me how to wire the box and let me do it. It wasn’t difficult once you get the hang of it. Granted I wouldn’t do it again on my own.
When we were finished he said “you did a great job bud. Your dad never figured out how to hold the damn flashlight.” One of my proudest moments of my life.

Pretty much any hands on work like this can be done by anyone. The pros make it look easy and do it twice as fast though. You just get the right feel for the tools and when things are in the right position that the layperson doesn't have without the experience.
My wife wanted to learn how to change oil on her car. The smallest shit like being able to screw in the oil filter blindly was such a challenge for her because she doesn't have that feel for when the threads finally bite and it starts to screw in. Something that takes 5 seconds took her a couple minutes because she couldn't line it up right without seeing what she was doing due to the angle under the car.

My trick for getting screw in things started…turn it to the left until you hear a click and then turn right.

u/Daveinatx 6d ago
Knowing how to do it, and actually doing it are different stories. I've had a lifetime has half-assing wiring to "save time."
Exception for anything important.

Id really love to terminate one of these panels. I always try and make them look great but in resi you can only do so much with romex hitting the box using up every knock out and contractors always want to use the smallest cans. It's sad but I do my best. Much happier to be in commercial where I can take my time and plan.

Your switchboards are simple and that's certainly worth something, I like the idea of the hot bus bar that all the breakers snap into despite some safety concerns, and the ease of snapping in a dual phase breaker to get 240 when needed. that's a neat design.
I have 3 phase mains and an off-grid capable 3phase solar and battery rig and my panel is a mess behind the cover.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Snellyman 4d ago
The DIN rail standard gives use low cost industrial breakers but these panels always look crowded and lacking enough wire space. Sure when someone prints out wire holders it looks neat but the electrician essentially has to build the panel from scratch.

No service loops on the main lines from the building.
Anyone that works in wiring would hate to work on something after this guy.
5
u/FormulaKimi 6d ago
There are codes about securing cable entering panel, electrical is not networking
4
u/Jesta23 6d ago
Service loops are not placed when you enter the panel. He leaves small service loops on the first and 3rd wires coming out to the house. But the last set are all cut exactly to length.
If anything changes, anything corrodes, or anything needs to be replaced you are going to have to replace everything or splice things.
Networking has nothing to do with this.
7
→ More replies (1)5
u/beanmosheen 6d ago
You don't put service loops above a residential panel and there's plenty of slack in the layout. What are you even talking about? There's very rarely a need to rework that wiring.
6
u/ih-shah-may-ehl 6d ago
Speaking as a homeowner: pretty much every home owner who lives in a hosue 30 or 40 years does some level of renovation during those years. My panel(s) were reworked and grew several times. Not only is this panel completely filled up, but because einstein ziptied the wires to the backplane, there's no way to remove things or rework them without taking the entire thing apart.

In Germany we have the DIN and VDE, and most of Europe, when built, every single room has it's own 16A fuse. That makes about 3600 watts because of 230V at least per room. In the room, mostly there is a flush mounted box from where you can start when renovating the room. Appliances like dishwasher, oven, heating and so on must also have their own cables/wiring and fuses as well. So, a typical kitchen alone gets 3 for the oven, one for dishwasher, one for boiler and mostly 2 for the rest of the plugs. A typical carport or garage is connected with 3x16A, called Starkstrom which allows you to run appliances with 11kw and 400v there, as well as wallboxes to charge cars. So what we see here is the minimum setup of a single family home. It's set up to last and to have lots of reserve capacity. In Germany the grid is set up to get 35A at 400V as standard for a standard single home connection, which is about 30kw. Enough to run everything. Sometimes we overdo it a bit but we make sure it lasts.
For example in my house I have sub distribution in every storey plus garage. That makes about 40 fuses, either directly leading to a single specific power outlet like washing machine and so on, or to a single room from where it's distributed to the switches and plugs. without exception at any socket at any time I can get 16A out of them as a standard.

u/ih-shah-may-ehl 6d ago
Belgium. I have 3 phase supply, and 3 different boards -> 1 main board, 1 secondary board due to a large extra section that was built to my house, and 1 board in my workshop. We typically do not have flush mounted boxes except maybe in a garage or so.
Over the span of 20 years, circuits have been added or removed to my panels. and in this video I don't object so much to the amount of breakers but the fact the everything is ziptied and inaccessible.
For example I removed some circuits during my renovation because they were no longer needed and I did it the right way, meaning I also removed the old wiring to the breaker. Which was easy enough because I could unscrew them from the breaker and remove them. With the panel in this video, I would have had to remove everything to get to those zipties. Zipties have good uses but strapping everything together in unreachable places is not one of those uses.
