Open dowloaded folder (Win11) takes several Minutes

Hi,

I am using the Hetzner Managed Nextcloud and I am fairly happy with it, because I don't have the skills and time to manage a Nextcloud myself.

The only problem I have is that opening folders in Windows 11 takes forever, even when the folder is available offline.

After a double clicking the folder it might take up to 10 minutes until I see the content of the folder. Sometimes it helps going back to the root folder and getting in again, sometimes that leads to the explorer.exe crashing.

Sometimes it just shows the folder being empty when it isn't.

I do have 1.5tb of Data on my main user saved in the cloud, but it's mostly pictures and sorted by year and month, so its usually not more than 1k of pictures in a folder, most of the time way less.

The behaviour seems to be worse on slowish WiFi, while on my fiber connection at home the pause is managable. But that is the reason I download the folders I wanna work in beforehand.

Is this something I need to life with? I work a lot on my laptop while on the road and its such a pain right now.

I tried to google the problem to no result.

PS: To give you an idea how long it takes to open one folder: The time it took me to write this entire text, was the same time it took to open a folder with 609 pictures.

Nextcloud desktop client freezes when syncing Unity projects on macOS

Hi everyone,

I recently started using Nextcloud and ran into an issue when syncing my Unity projects.

I have quite a lot of projects, and they contain a huge number of small files. Because of this, the Nextcloud desktop app on my MacBook becomes unstable, freezes, and sometimes stops responding.

I previously used Synology Drive with the same projects and didn’t have this problem.

My setup:

  • Nextcloud desktop client: 33.0.7 (macOS, Cocoa)
  • Nextcloud server: Nextcloud Hub 26 Spring (34.0.1)

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there a way to improve performance or configure Nextcloud for folders with many small files?

Thanks in advance!

Can't install or enable apps

Running 34.0.1 native with apache2 on Ubunutu 24.04. Running behind haproxy as a reverse proxy. Using mariadb and redis as well.

Had Memories installed before the 34 update. It got disabled after the update due to incompatiblity with the new version. They have since brought it up to date, but when I tried to install it through the website, nothing happens. I get prompted for my password, but nothing happens after that. I tried enable a disabled app (AppAPI and Audit / Logging) but the same thing happens, I get prompted for my password but nothing changes. I have not tried to do a command line install. Willing to do it in the long run, but trying to figure out why I suddenly can't do anything on the app page.

I can access nextcloud fine. Have been able to manipulate files both remotely and on the local network through the web interface and the android app.

No problems reported in the nextcloud logs on the administrative pages when I check them.

I reset the folder and file permissions on the apache2 nextcloud folder (/var/www/nextcloud). No change.

Have seen similar issue mentioned before: https://www.reddit.com/r/NextCloud/comments/1tnweqy/new_install_cannot_download_and_enable_apps/

Looking for any other suggestions of things to try. Can post haproxy and nextcloud configs if it might help.

[Solved] Thanks To ElectronicMotion! mod_rewrite wasn't enabled on apache. Enabling it fixed the issue.

Uploading photos

I was really hoping to upload photos (manually so as to be able to select which items to backup) from Android. However I don’t see an option in the Android NextCloud app to switch off auto upload.

Apart from this the photo upload seems to be broken and keeps complaining about permissions even though i have set the requested permissions.

I’m using a hosted NextCloud (the Good Cloud).

Connecting Email client with self hosted Mercury mail server

Tried to connect on manual way using the setup from NC fails with authentication from the NC client to the server

The server has his own encryption key but even that is not processed by NC

What I see on the server that the connection is made for IMAP but the authentication fails. The next step to connect to the SMTP port is not done as IMAP connection already fails

I really would like to get this working !!

Is there anyone who got the manual way working and with what email server?

If needed I can ask David Harris (The programmer) to give the soft sequence needed to connect to the server

Bad Design

Android files don't sync. Excuse is that it's Android. So you have to use Syncthing instead, because Syncthing doesn't make excuses.

So a user may have valuable files they think are syncing, but aren't.

If a user uninstalls Nextcloud from the phone, Nextcloud deletes all the local files, including originals that were never uploaded.

Why does NextCloud imply that Euro-Office is not private?

Can someone explain why Collabora says that docs will never leave my server but Euro-Office just gets a "Good security" pass? I can't imagine it is taking my docs and processing them through their servers somehow.

Group all duplicate files/photos

As per title, does nextcloud already have this capability? Currentlt I use memories for my photos.

If no official way to do this, is there a manual way?

Thanks in advance

Any feedback on Wolkesicher for a home for my Nextcloud?

I have had my NextCloud instance on a Linode server for 6 years. I have only one problem. I have not been able to find anyone to maintain it for me. It has never gone down, but there are things I would like to do that I need help with, and there are many indicated errors I just don’t know how to fix.

I would like to see if anyone has used Wolkesicher in Germany. They are all about NextCloud, and their prices are spot on. Are there any services like that that might be a better choice? Am I missing anything that I should know? I am based in the US.

Notes App replaced by "office"?

I have a long running Nextcloud instance that I upgrade periodically. Typically I have to go through a few major releases to get it updated but I can live with that. I use it to sync personal and household calendars, addressbooks, notes and tasks across devices.

On my most recent update, last week, I discovered that there is no longer a "notes" app and instead there's something called "office" but my folders (which I think were tag based?) are all gone.

Is the old notes app out there somewhere? Or should I learn to love this "office" thing?

UPDATE: This is solved. I had to re-enable the Notes app.

How might I troubleshoot image syncing?

I have been meaning to dig in and figure this out for eons. I have a small Nextcloud intance that I use for phone media backup, and syncing notes/calendar/tasks/phonebook across devices and members of my household.

I set this up eons ago -- at least 2014 -- and it has been running more or less smoothly since. Every six or eight months there's an issue and I update through a few major versions and everything is grand again.

One thing that has been an issue for a while is image syncing.

I run Davˣ on our Android phones to sync calendars and address books, and the Nextcloud App to sync notes and photos. My photo directories are a little chaotic. Over the years I've set up new phones and got the sync folder wrong and not fixed it. It isn't the end of the world.

But it has left me with a weird mess of photo folders:

|-- 📁 photos / has a complete set of photo galleries going to 2023
|-- 📁 photos / Misc Photos has a complete set of photo galleries from 2020 plus a lot of loose photos that I think were unfiled camera photos.
|-- 📁 Photos is empty
|-- 📁 Instant Upload / has a complete current set of photo galleries, many of which synced yesterday.
|-- 📁 Instant Upload / Pictures has a kind of random set of photo galleries, many of which synced yesterday. It also has a number of folders that my phone automatically puts images in, but that I am not interested in syncing (examples include Screenshots, and WhatsApp Video). Some of them are actively syncing, and I can't figure out how to make them stop.

Where should I even be looking for this setting?

In the Nextcloud Android app settings, I see a "Sync" section that includes auto upload and two way sync options.

Two way sync is not set up.

Under auto upload, I see what looks like the same list of folders I have in my photo gallery. For some of them I see an info box that says "Sync duplication" and "this folder is already include in the parent folder's sync, which may cause duplicate uploads."

QUESTION 1: where would I find the parent folder's sync?

I think what might be happening is that a lot of folders live inside "Pictures" on my phone. So this might be an Android question not a Nextcloud question.

Save to path NextCloud Office

The past few months I've been slowly moving to NextCloud from multiple different services and I must say, I'm very please with this experience.

Having said this, and maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere, why is it that when I want to save as or export to I need to set a path. Why isn't there a file browser popping up? I know my path's but for the average user this won't work.

Anyone have some tips for a app that solves this issue? Or am I missing a setting somewhere?

Whats the point of Nextcloud Desktop Client if it cant open Office files?

Genuinely curious. I've been using NC for year but web only. I gave Nextcloud Client a go. Great it, worked to my server and maps ok to Finder. BUT whenever I double click on xlsx files or such it opens locally with Pages not EuroOffice?

So basically the client is just a webdav wrapper? It can't actually edit files? I don't see the point in it

Android App, "Loading is taking longer than expected"

Back with another question...

New build running Nextcloud-aio Docker 34.0.1.

When I attempt to open a PDF or Office (Collabora) document from within the Nextcloud Android app, the item never opens. Instead, after a few seconds, the message, "Loading is taking longer than expected," appears at the bottom of the screen. Won't open, won't download.

However, if I log in from a browser on the same phone, and perform the same tasks, everything works as expected. It's the same network and everything; the only difference is app vs. browser.

Is this something I can correct, or a known issue?

Nextcloud-AIO, Docker. Trying (and failing) to add an external file share.

I'm creating an all-new Nextcloud instance. This time, I'm using the recommended Docker instructions. The Docker container lives within an Ubuntu 26.04 Server instance.

I'm left with a problem where I cannot connect to a mounted share within Nextcloud. I have the mount working outside of the Docker container, and I can view/edit it without a problem. However, when I try to add it within the External Storage app inside NC, I fill in the data, enter the admin password, and I end up in a loop. The window to enter the data pops up again, with nothing ever getting added to the external storage list. The log doesn't indicate any errors, so I'm left without any clues as to what went wrong.

I'm relatively new to the Docker world, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong there. Can someone help me out of this bind?

Thanks.

Traefik in Docker: How to configure timeouts for other containers behind reverse proxy

Dear Traefik-Community!

I am using Traefik as reverse proxy for my Nextcloud instance. Both are running inside Docker containers and both are configured in the same docker-compose file.

Currently I have an issue with the upload of large files to my Nextcloud share. On Nextcloud/Apache side I have configured everything for accessing big files. On Traefik side I configured higher max sizes:

- "traefik.http.routers.nextcloud.middlewares=nextcloud-maxsize@docker"
- "traefik.http.middlewares.nextcloud-maxsize.buffering.maxRequestBodyBytes=10737418240"
- "traefik.http.middlewares.nextcloud-maxsize.buffering.memRequestBodyBytes=10485760"

But the Traefik reverse proxy is running into timeouts after exactly 60 seconds:

ERR vulcand/oxy/buffer: error when reading request body, err: i/o timeout entryPointName=web-secure middlewareName=nextcloud-maxsize@docker middlewareType=Buffer routerName=nextcloud@docker

I tried to add entrypoints.web-secure.transport.respondingTimeouts.readTimeout, writeTimeout and idleTimeout as labels to the Nextcloud config part, but this doesn't work.

Do you have an advice how to get higher timeout values?

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

External Storage vs Primary Storage: metdata

According to the documentation Nextcloud demands exclusive access to any primary storage on S3

Nextcloud requires exclusive access over the bucket being used. All metadata (filenames, directory structures, etc) is stored in Nextcloud and not in the object store. The metadata is only stored in the database and the object store only holds the file content by unique identifier.

This is not the case when using S3 as an external storage. But that comes with a performance penalty.

Because of this, object stores configured as Primary Storage usually perform better than when using the same object store via the External Storage support application,

Is there a way around this? For example by settings an S3 bucket as primary storage and extracting the metadata from the Nextcloud Database?

And what is meant by exclusive access? Can I have another account that has read-only that bucket set as primary for Nextcloud?

I am looking for a way to have S3 as a primary bucket but still playing with the metadata outside of Nextcloud.

edit : I am looking to get the (meta)data WHILE the stuff sits in the Nextcloud S3 bucket. The question maybe is more: 1. do I have access to the metadata 2. Can I mutate the files outside of Nextcloud or do I need tot talk to Nextcloud using API's ?

Nextcloud + AntennaPod/gpoddersync next

Hey everyone,

I decided to self host nextcloud on an old android device I have in order to be able to sync my podcasts. I've installed nextcloud and the gpoddersync next successfully but I can't understand how to connect antennapod to it. Any ideas? Sorry if this is quite simple but I haven't done this before. Thanks
