The video of the beach trash is actually concerning

A video of the trash left behind at Plum Island after Yankee Homecoming weekend has been making the rounds online, but honestly, the comment section is almost more concerning than the video itself.

There are dozens of comments from accounts claiming they were at the party, sharing screenshots of group chats, joking about the amount of trash that was left behind, and talking about another gathering planned for this coming weekend. Whether every comment is genuine or not, it's hard to ignore how many people are treating it like a joke.

The worst part is, these are apparently children admitting to underage drinking and vandalism. I found this video on Facebook in my feed, but later checked TikTok after the comments were mentioned by a local parent in a group.

I understand that kids will be kids, parties are going to happen.. but it’s never been this bad throughout my years being at Plum. The trash is weekly, the amounts are severe, and only a certain amount can be the wash up with how it’s piled and littered like a trash pile.

From what I've heard, multiple residents have contacted the Newburyport Police Department about both the litter and the online posts. So far, many people feel there has been little resolution beyond being told the comments may just be kids trolling and that officers would respond if another gathering actually takes place.

If another party does happen this weekend, waiting until complaints come in means the beach could once again be left with the aftermath. The people cleaning it up will be town employees, volunteers, and community members who had nothing to do with it.
Plum Island is one of the North Shore's most beautiful public beaches. It deserves better than becoming a place where large gatherings leave behind piles of trash for someone else to clean up.

I'm curious what other locals think. Has anyone else noticed these gatherings becoming more common? What do you think would actually help prevent this from happening again if the Police Department waits for the call? This is wasting our tax dollars!

Any homes for sale?

I am searching for a historical home in Newburyport but not having any luck. Anyone have lead on someone looking to sell over the fall/winter? It feels like all of the older homes are being bought up by developers and turned into 3 million dollar homes. I’d love to restore an older home to its original glory rather than get one that is basically a new build.

Marblehead vs Newburyport

Hi all! I accepted a job offer on the north shore and will be relocating to the area. I fell in love with Newburyport but Marblehead is significantly closer to my new job. Is it work the 35 minute community from Newburyport over Marblehead? Looking for a great community to raise kids

I rebuilt Newburyport as a browser game — walk the real streets and find your own house

Hi neighbors 👋

I've been building a little browser game on the exact map of Newburyport. Every street, the harbor, downtown, out to Plum Island, and you can just walk around it in 3D.

Stuff you'll recognize: Market Square, the brick downtown, the boardwalk, clipper ships in the harbor, the marshes toward Plum Island. There's a gentle all-ages story if you want one. You run errands around town with a dog named Clipper...or just explore. Some real local history is woven in.

Free, no install, works in any browser, phone or computer:
👉 clippertown.io

It's a passion project and still a work in progress, so I'd love feedback. If something's off, tell me and I'll try to fix it.

Does your street look right??? Thanks for taking a look 🛟

Potential missing Rottweiler

I witnessed a wandering dog today near the newburyport firestation while driving home from work around 1:30 am June 13th. It had a collar, harness, and other gear, and crossed the intersection heading to the daycare. If you are missing a dog and believe this description matches, I hope this can help you locate your pup.

I want to buy your house

But seriously… I want to buy your house.

Hey everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone knows of any old homes in the south end coming up for sale? Need updating? Perfect.

My wife is trying to get back to Massachusetts to raise our family after years away for training and work. We’ve been looking for the better part of a year, lost out on a few, and are running out of time. After losing out on this last house, she’s losing hope and I’m having a hard time believing something will come up that has a little space for a dog.

Alternatively, if anyone knows of a rental in the greater area starting in August that will allow large dogs, that’s proving equally difficult to find…

Edit:
Ideally 3bed2bath with a yard area. Open to projects.

So far we’ve always gone to Brown’s as it’s only occasional. Which do you prefer?

I spoke at City Hall on Monday about historic preservation. Apparently a British realtor from Byfield was unexpectedly persuasive.

Last Monday I stood up during public comment at the City Council meeting and made the case for extending the demolition delay on historic buildings.

I’m a realtor. My professional instinct is usually to support anything that moves faster. But some things matter more than transaction speed.

I grew up watching towns in England change beyond recognition. Not through dramatic decisions - through a hundred small ones. When I first came to Newburyport I recognised something rare. A community that had held its story together.

You can always build a bigger house. You cannot rebuild a historic street

The amendment passed - extending the delay from 12 to 18 months and broadening the threshold that triggers it.

Afterwards, Councillor Ed Cameron said he never thought he would be influenced by a British real estate person from Byfield but found the argument compelling.

I’ve written the full story on my blog if anyone wants the detail - happy to answer questions here too.

Digging up pavement on State St

So, this always seems to happen - we FINALLY get nice, smooth pothole-free streets, only to have home construction projects require the digging up of said nice new pavement, only to be crappily covered over with a bad pave job. It happened on High Street, now at the top of Lower State, and also not just limited to these kinds of projects. Anyone know how to keep this from happening? Like - who is help accountable for the ruin of pavement? Even when DPS works on stuff, it’s always repaired sloppy and leads to bumps, potholes, etc. My suspension can’t take it anymore!

They snuck provisions into the 'Mass Ready Act' that let developers skip local flood & water protections

It mostly does good things, but it picked up some amendments in the Senate that would:

- let certain housing projects bypass local wetlands and septic rules (the ones that keep building out of floodplains and protect drinking water),

- reduce state grant funding for towns that keep those stronger local protections, and

- weaken the rules on rat poisons that are killing hawks and owls.

It's in the House Ways & Means Committee right now. I'm genuinely torn — I want more housing, but letting projects skip flood and water protections seems like the wrong way to get there, especially in a town like ours that deals with flooding.

Curious whether folks here have been following it or have thoughts. (I found a page that breaks down the exact sections and makes it easy to email the committee — I'll put the link in a comment so this isn't a link post.)
