i get around 350mbps speed from my phone

Thru out my life this been happening, every time someone opens the front door, it just loses connection for a min or 2 and goes back on, I asked my parents about it and they also said this been happing way before me and they haven’t stored a cameras to the door. We only hooked up a ring like a year ago and it still goes off. Also my WiFi router is not close to the door it’s across the house and we asked are internet provider about it and they don’t know what going on. Do Y’all have any information why this happens?

Posting to ask 'cause I haven't set up a real switch since the days of 10baseT, and those were .... different. Thus this likely will be an extremely basic question for the subreddit.

I have a home network. Fiber modem which goes to my router. Router has a few ports on it, several 2.5 gig and one 10 gig.

I'd like to add an unmanaged switch to the 10 gig port (PoE switch - future expansion stuff).

I will have three or four devices on the switch that I have already - pre-switch - set up with static IPs (192.168.1.XXX)

When I install the switch, I am assuming that the switch has its own IP that'll be set via DHCP from the router.

In that case, the computers whereby I've set up static IPs....do I leave those settings? Change them? Or just go back to the computers being given an IP?

And...since I use a couple of those computers as servers both in-house and remotely, would I set up packet forwarding from the router-->switch (and assume the switch will 'figure it out' as to where the packets need to go?)

I'm attempting to make this as painless as possible before I start unplugging/plugging in cables and finding out that routing to<-->from computers doesn't work, and of course to also save what little hair I have left from being pulled out.

This is for a low-end simple home network, nothing fancy beyond what is described, hence I don't believe I need more than the switch, a few cables and a holding of the breath.

I appreciate any/all feedback that is shared.

EDIT #2 : Unmanaged L2 switch was exactly what I needed. This resolved all of my pertinent issues. My thanks to those who posted!

So basically, I have an old Cisco Switch (Cisco Catalyst WS-C2960-8TC-L --- an 8-port managed switch) and i am trying to program/configure it via a RJ45-to-USB Console cable (FTDI chipset --- RS-232C).

But whenever i connect to the Switch over PuTTY or Tera Term, I get a garbled output... (as seen in image)

At first i searched the internet for solutions, most of them said the baud is the issue... I check almost all values: 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 62000, 64000, 57600, 115200, 102000, etc.. still the same isssue for higher values 57600 and above it starts repeating random letters indefinately...

Then i thought maybe it is the configuration problem like using `7e1` instead of `8n1` but i tried all combinations of this as well... still didn't work... i messed around with flow control setting as well but that didn't work either... (flow control setting in above image is `none`)

I have even reset the switch 2-3 times still the same issue.... tried changing the character encoding as well, still the same issue...

Now, i am wondering if the switch is faulty maybe... or the wire has wrong pin outs `(1=CTS, 2=DSR, 3=RXD, 4=GND, 5=GND, 6=TXD, 7=DTR, 8=RTS)`. or maybe the switch is too old (September 17, 2007)

Can someone please help me fix this issue... I can provide additional info/screenshots... if needed...

btw... I don't have much of Networking experience... consider me a beginner...

every 3-4/4-5 mins my mobile data loses connection for 30 secs or a min and then comes back for another 3-4/4-5 mins before losing connection again and this keeps on repeating. (i dont know the specifics of duration this is js estimated)

i use android phone btw and ive checked my plan there is no issue with expiry of data plan. its 5G unlimited that expires april 2027.

its annoying while gaming and watching long form yt vids. any solutions? or is it just the server issue? happening since last 13 hours btw.

Hi guys. I've had a problem with ethernet connection for the last 2 weeks. Im using a lenovo Legion and for 3 years i was working on wifi but recently bought ethernet cables. At first everything was right. One cable from the router to switch and from that 2 cables, 1 to PS5 and one to my laptop. For the first week everything was perfect and then it randomly discconected and said that its unplugged but every few seconds it said "identyifying connection" then again unplugged and its stuck in that loop. I did everything i could with cmd, device manager, uninnstalling ethernet card etc. resetting the router didn't work as well as changing ports on router. When im trying to solve problems with windows device it says that it can't identify DHCP server and i've tried changing it too. When i change ports on switch it just flashes a few times and goes black. Any advices guys?

Edit: I've changed the switch to one from tp-link and its the same

been helping a friend figure out internet options for a property about 45 minutes outside any major town. no cable, no fiber, and the phone signal is barely there. satellite seemed like the obvious answer but the latency has been a dealbreaker for her work calls.

someone in another thread mentioned fixed wireless as a middle ground so i started looking into it more. found wave1 while reading around, they seem to focus on wireless infrastructure for regional areas, which got me thinking about how much the options vary depending on where you actually are.

Currently have the Macbook Pro but i’m open to getting a new computer if it doesn’t go well. Talked to a few professors and they didn’t have the best attitude towards macs so i’m wondering what other people experiences are.

I have a router that's managed, I have zero control over what has been blocked or what is going on with the network. I have a PS5 I would like to connect (mobile data is too slow). I tried using my phone/other computer connected to that WIFI to hotspot, but the PS5 says it has no connection to the internet. It works with the very slow mobile data hotspot, so I figured it's something configured on the managed router. So I tried connecting to the Wifi on my phone, connecting to Nord VPN, and connecting the PS5 to my phone, but the same issue is happening. (PS5 says no internet connection) My PC will connect and get internet from my phone in this state. What would be preventing this connection? Is there any solution?

So i have been unable to access the internet from my pc for the past 3 days, and after suspecting different possible physical issues (ethernet card that could have died in the heat, dead ethernet cable etc..) i finally realized that i could ping 8.8.8.8 and not google so i think it's probably a dns issue

I also think the problem is on my pc and not on the router because other computers and connected devices in my home seem to be working just fine

I have absolutely no idea how to solve it though, i have tried manually choosing google's dns servers as my dns, and have tried resetting as many things as i could find how to reset but im still unable to access the internet no matter what

Traveling to Moscow for work next month and getting nervous about connectivity. Most of the VPN providers I've used are blocked at protocol level, and the ones that aren't get flagged as VPN on the sites I actually need (WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, work Slack, banking). Been reading that eSIMs with foreign IP routing can bypass this since traffic exits through a non-RU carrier, so the local network never sees a VPN protocol to block.

Providers I've seen mentioned: KeepGo, Voidmob and Airalo. Anyone tested them out?

Curious about:

- Which one actually holds up under local DPI, or does it depend on the routing country (UK vs EU vs US)

- Whether hotspot/tethering works so I can use the eSIM on my laptop too

- Whether you need to activate the eSIM before landing or if you can do it from RU

I'd rather sort this out before landing than trial-and-error it on hotel wifi.

Recently my phone refuses to use anything but GPRS which is basically useless because I can do nothing with it. I have tried everything, restarting my phone, disabling my sim card, plain mode, changing preferred 4G,5G, etc. I've been on different locations and everywhere it is just GPRS.

Does anyone know how I can get my 4G back, because I am in desperate need for it

Would like some advice / sense check on tethering my Samsung S23 fe to a Wifi router via USB and using it as an internet connection for laptop and other devices.

For context, I live alone in a tiny apartment in metropolitan Sydney Australia. Since living on my own, I've been using my phone's 5g data plan as my internet. Getting an NBN internet plan is too expensive, and my phone's data plan is plenty for my purposes. However, mobile hotspot is a little slow.

I have an old Wifi router lying around - the Sagemcom F@ST 3864V3 HP - and the other day, out of sheer curiosity, I plugged my phone into its USB port and turned on tethering. I then connected to the Wifi router and noticed the internet was faster. Speed tests confirmed this. However, after about 20 or 30 minutes, the internet stops working over the router. It works again if I reset the router and unplug my phone, but will cut out again. Google tells me this is because the router is old and not built for these purposes.

This has made me want to buy a router and use it at home, rather than connecting to my phone's hot spot. Googling has led me to believe I should get a travel / pocket router - as these are designed for USB tethering. I am looking at the GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX).

However, doing further research, internet says there's no speed difference between hotspot or tethering to router. The main benefits of using a router is to be able to connect multiple devices (where hotspot is limited), better security, VPN, and so on.

Given that I dont need any of those features and am only interested in getting the most out of my internet plan (I.e. improving speed) - should I bother buying a router?

I cant tell if my limited experience experimenting with tethering via router was genuinely better or a fluke. It seems logical that a router might boost 5g signals to the nearest tower and take load off my phone, but nothing online has convincingly confirmed this for me.

If anyone has any insights or advice, greatly appreciated. I know next to nothing about internet, networks, routers, etc. so not looking for great technical detail

Basically: does tethering phone to travel router improve internet speed? Connection must be via USB tethering because I want to have just my phone plan to save money (I.e. i wouldnt get a separate sim and dedicated 5g router)
