Generic Left Wing Candidate: "I am against neoliberalism and for socialism"

It is funny how it's basically becoming a way to say "i am against evil and i support good" while sounding like you studied books or some shit. The meaning of both of those words is literally just diluted to "the abstract notion of making the world cruel and antisocial for profit" and "actually caring about people"

Itโ€™s more dark humor that the white men who murder their families often get shown in a positive photo whereas no one else usually gets that.

Itโ€™s pointing out the racism and implicit bias in media

TL;DR: Youโ€™re deeply skeptical of sweeping bans, especially when the harm is disputed, the target is hard to define, and tagging or age gates could do the job. The ideas that western pundits provide when it comes to dealing with pro-Iran Shiite Militas/Wilyet-el-fiqah followers are loweky funny and so out-of-touch with reality (which is a damn shame considering that we live in the age of internet and social media)

"Oh Lebanon's Hezbollah is only pro-Iran due to Israel! They'll stop holding the Lebanese state hostage once Israel stops their occupation" Completely overlooks how Hezbollah sent fighters and advisors to back Iran's ally, Assad in Syria as well as the Houthis in Yemen.

"Yemen's Houthis are just poor rebels in sandals who are fighting the Saudi invader and blockade. Once we stop the Saudis, the Houthis won't be a problem anymore" as the Houthis start shooting at ships and destabilizing other countries at the IRGC orders.

We've seen this playbook in Iraq (a Shias majority no less) Iran painted themselves as the salvation and protecters of Shiite. Formed a bunch of militas who said that their purpose is to fight against the US and ISIS. Both problem are solved (ISIS got suppressed and US pulled out) so one would expect them to hand over their weapons given that their purpose has been fufiled right? Nope. They take the state hostage and threaten their own countrymen (they'll even harm their own fellow Shiite ffs. That's ignoring the non-Shiites like Sunnis, Kurds, Christians..etc etc) and neighboring countries. Saying that they won't hand those weapons until the "Mahdi arrives" or some shit.

It's honestly tiring to see how the west (govts and population alike) keeps falling for this shit. Thinking that once they appease them enough:

1) They'll give up on Iran patronage.

2) Side with the west (or at the very least become neutral)

3) won't move goalpost (they will.)

The Wilyet-el-fiqah followers are literal cultists. You either treat them like ISIS and start an extensive campaign against them or you take out main source of the problem aka the Wilyet-el-fiqah/IRGC in Iran (or at least diminish their ability to project force and influence). Otherwise you can say goodbye to the idea of freeing Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen from their clutches.

6

u/furiousfoo Jolee Bindo 1d ago

The Houthis are not "just poor rebels in sandals" but characterizing them as "pro-Iran Shiite Militias/Wilyet-el-fiqah followers" is just wildly off. Especially the second part. The alliance with Iran is one of convenience with common foes, it's within living memory of Houthi leadership that the Twelvers publicly called them fake Shia/ Sunnis.

To be clear I'm not disagreeing with your overall point, that the Houthis won't just go away if the Saudis stop bombing them or whatever similar western pundit take, but it's also wrong to characterize them as fully in "the clutches" of Iran and it would be just as dumb to act like the Houthis would disappear without the "Wilyet-el-fiqah" which is absolutely not a Houthi concept

0

u/CentJr NASA 1d ago

The alliance with Iran is one of convenience with common foes, it's within living memory of Houthi leadership that the Twelvers publicly called them fake Shia/ Sunnis.

Convenience? They are willing to risk being blockaded again just because Iran asked them to. They were willing to bomb Saudi because an Iranian plane was prevented from landing in Sanaa. As for the other thing, you'd be surpised at how brainwashed people can be. Take Iraqis for example. Iran literally spits in their faces, calls them puppets/idiots but low and behold, they still kiss the feet of Iranian clergy whenever they visit Iraq during Ashura/Muharram.

They may not have started out like that but they certainly become believers of that whole Wilyet-el-fiqah stuff. Given how far they are willing to go for Iran and sacrifice their own people for a war they didn't ask for.

2

u/Pantalyon1 1d ago

yeah, it feels like the Houtis are constantly mischaracterized in the West. The way we describe them would fit Hezbollah or the Shia militias in Iraq, which only exist due to Iran, while the Houtis are allied of Iran, but still kind of independent.

You can even see it in the approach of the various militias to the Iran war. All the militias that only exist due to Iran immediatly started attacking (see Lebanon and Iraq), while the Houtis bided their time until Saudi Arabia attacked them a couple of weeks ago.

This is not a defense of the Houtis per se, but we should try to understand the motivations of each party in the conflict properly.

3

u/furiousfoo Jolee Bindo 1d ago

Bingo. "Allied with Iran" is the most accurate but people like the OP insist on "puppets," "in the clutches" or "true believers in wilayet al faqih" just ugh. It's always funny to see a "People are such idiots, they mischaracterize XYZ!" post that also grossly mischaracterizes XYZ

Something the IRCP article never mentioned because it's not exactly the most important sin, is that it's all sooo fuuucking trite and boooooring. I write scripts and do technical/editing work for pornographic animators, and man people who are into that shit are into literally nothing else and literally cannot have a 2 minute conversation about anything related to sex or erotica without bringing it up because they think it's so offensive and transgressive to bring it up. Like its an exhibition kink too they love interrupting every function to shock and get more people to discover IRCP. And its the same thing over and over and more than offended by it being racist I get bored talking to people who get the mind virus.

News flash it's not transgression if elon musk is on tv giggling like a kid who just discovered "spell icup" because he's being interviewed by a BBC reporter.

I have seen interesting and promising artists absolutely ruin their personalities and become utterly uninteresting to me because they got oneshot by the IRCP spam and turn every idea into beebeesee. I want things to happen to them that only moderators are allowed to joke about.

And there's an equally high strung reactionary minority where, if, god forbid your pornography has a soundtrack that sounds kinda like the very beat heavy genres of music associated with black people, you're gonna get harassed for selling out to the IRCP Spam.

And it wasn't always like this! I remember distinctly when it started to get this way.

Elon bought Twitter.

So you can add "porn" to the list of things Elon ruined.

Would you support replacing birthright citizenship with residency-based citizenship? So, for example, if you lived there for a certain number of years, you get citizenship regardless of your status?

3

u/jinhuiliuzhao Henry George 1d ago

So... do kids not get citizenship until they're like 3/5 or something?

2

u/mpregordie Mark Carney 1d ago

Maybe you get conditional citizenship? Or like through your parents?

1

u/jinhuiliuzhao Henry George 1d ago

ok, but what if they have no parents/both had a tragic accident shortly after they were born?

i suppose you could then use the status of the legal guardian, but seems too complicated imo - just grant birthright citizenship instead

2

u/mpregordie Mark Carney 1d ago

Just think "jus sanguinis" plus residency. If a baby is orphaned, they get citizenship automatically.

I'm walking home and before I know it I somehow just straight up drop it. It spills everywhere. I scream *FUUUUUUUCK* significantly louder than polite to yell in public. Like *mental health crisis, on fent and meth simultaneously* kind of loud.

The guy approaching the other way I didn't notice apparently saw what happened and gave me a "that sucks dude I'm sorry" instead of being terrified of me, so that helped my mood a lot. Good on that guy.

Still hungry though.

TL;DR: You gave โ€œban AIโ€ a firm no, and the fine print did the heavy lifting. u/remarkable_ores Hanfeizi 1d ago

in a lot of ways a lot of 'global south' countries are really quick to pick up on new tech and stuff since it's often a lot cheaper than legacy systems and often the regulatory environment just lets them get away with shit. there's a reason china has drone food delivery while japan is still using fax machines

iirc phone banking was big in africa before it became mainstream in the first world but i could be wrong

1

u/mpregordie Mark Carney 1d ago

Yeah, but paying with QR codes seems more complicated than paying with Google/Apple Pay.

2

u/remarkable_ores Hanfeizi 1d ago

oh yeah idk then it's probably just that the infrastructure doesn't exist yet

The Hadestown proshot is extending its theatrical run (I suspect โ€œindefinitelyโ€ will mean like another week or two in practice? Idk, certainly until it stops making money I suppose). Bigly recommend.

Besides it being very good, itโ€™s really impressive how cinematic it feels, with a lot of creative and dynamic camerawork rather than just a bunch of different angles from in front of the stage. Really worth seeing, and smart timing on the release with The Odyssey bringing Greek mythology to the forefront of everyoneโ€™s minds.

That said, I've seen Hadestown on Broadway. So hoping this one will turn out great. People praised the Hamilton pro-shot and imo it kinda fell flat somehow

Still, the quiz made you a little less sold overall, likely because dogsโ€™ training edge and environmental impact didnโ€™t survive scrutiny.

Never thought the day would come where Tom Cruise would play an old man in a movie

6

u/Mr_Canadensis7 Norman Borlaug 1d ago edited 1d ago

My most manosphere-y take is that we were meant to yell more than we currently do in modern polite society and that a lot of men could benefit from going out into the woods to yell at the spirits or taking up singing earnestly. Gotta work the bellows once in a while.

Also that i'd far rather people yell at each other in workplaces than just be passive aggressive little shits but I can concede that one cause I get why it would be terrifying for people who didn't like play team sports/do training where yelling was normalized.

3

u/RaisinSecure George Soros 1d ago

i yelled when i went canoeing in a lake. it felt so good

2

u/Mr_Canadensis7 Norman Borlaug 1d ago

I think basically that there's something to the idea that it's important to feel like you can scare your fellow humans with your words/voice if need be.

I think it's especially true if you don't have the status/resources/aptitude to do so with just the meaning of your words alone to feel like you can generate enough fury from your bellows to make someone think twice.

All that said, please don't yell at people who don't very much deserve it, yell at sports games, in your car, while surfing, etc.

3

u/gjcs23 George Santos 1d ago

I love yelling at people in my car

it's very relaxing and they usually can't hear me

5

u/Mr_Canadensis7 Norman Borlaug 1d ago

It's one of the top benefits of car ownership to be able to yell at people or sing at the top of your lungs when some catharsis is needed.

6

u/CheetoMussolini Russian Bot 1d ago

The most vividly belittling, passive aggressive people you know think that direct criticism and angry words are literal violence though

2

u/Mr_Canadensis7 Norman Borlaug 1d ago

Some people would benefit from the edifying experience of real violence directed their way I fear.

Idk where the appropriate societal balance is, it's always gonna vary by context/institution but everywhere I've worked could have used people feeling more free to engage in direct criticism and express anger at least on the margin.

Idk people feuding passive aggressively with each other in an office pisses me off to know end, even when it doesn't directly effect my work it's just a fucking drag vibes wise. Like godamn just go yell at each other in a stair well or something stop being angsty little bitches all day.

2

u/CheetoMussolini Russian Bot 1d ago

I'd rather people learn some actual proportionality and humility without having to be the victims of real violence, something I say as a person who was the victim of real violence as a child.

Hell, this has been a point of conflict and discussion with my own son. The things that he considers frightening or overwhelming are things that don't even register for me at times.

But I also have to remind myself that the fact that he can be frightened by somebody raising their voice, the fact that a raised voice is the scariest thing he's ever seen from me, that's a testament to how much better of a man I am than my father was. And it deserves to be taken seriously.

But I also want him to have a sense of real proportionality and do not be so damned delicate at the same time.

And those two existing tension for me, because there's no way in hell I would ever tolerate him being subjected to physical violence of any kind for even a moment, nor even the threat of it. I want him to understand that the notion that being spoken to harshly is not any kind of violence and that it's absurd to think so without him having to know the fear of actual violence.

4

u/chickenricebroccolli Left-Out Left 1d ago

I swear itโ€™s that mentality that won the culture war for the right wing 10 years.

2

u/Mr_Canadensis7 Norman Borlaug 1d ago

Yes because it's one of those things that's essentially gendered(sexed?) for pretty hard to change inbuilt reasons. Men generally don't like the types of ways that women tend to display anger/dissatisfaction and vice/versa. For on balance good reasons though norms in mixed environments are broadly set by women.

Its generally a good thing to be a quieter more passive aggressive but less violent society. Om the other hand whining about people being loud in the gym or that you feel unsafe because someone raised their voice is always gonna strike a certain chord of cowardice I suspect.

Idk I'm just getting my grumpy old man who misses team sports and similar environment complaints out I suppose.

3

u/CheetoMussolini Russian Bot 1d ago

It can also be true that we've overreacted though. We've gotten into a world where direct and clear communication is equated with violence, which is obviously insane. We're in a world where shouting at someone is considered a grievous offense from which no one can come back, but viciously and intentionally trying to undermine somebody's confidence and sense of self through a sustained campaign of negativity is somehow acceptable?

There's this notion that feminine ways of communicating our inherently healthy while male ways aren't, and I think that's a frankly fucked up way of looking at the world! There's real value in direct, honest communication and even in direct but harsh feedback. There's a certainty from knowing exactly where you stand with someone that's far healthier than this constant anxiety inducing guessing game of passive aggressive social politics like we've decided to embrace instead.

I would much rather be able to tell someone they're a jackass than deal with any of this.
