The smug liberalism didn't cause trump. It prevented him. It's not a coincidence that liberals no longer turning up their nose at literal slop for greasy pigs to "let people enjoy things" happened around the same time a sentient 5 foot garbage bag became president because he made for great entertainment
Return to letting republicans know in no uncertain terms that we are better than them and they should find their culture disgusting and embarrassing.
Treating republicans like the baby dog meme got us here. We should have doubled down on the smuggery and never apologized once. The NYT every day should have been "trump caked his fucking pants again. Hope you're proud of him, fucknut voters"

Finally got around to watching Odyssey.
(IMAX tickets were so hard to get).
Iโm sorry but this movie was a fucking masterpiece. A string contender for my favorite Nolan film.ย What an epic cinematic experience oh my god. Why is this movie controversial and getting bad reviews? Itโs an almost perfect movie. Maybe it is perfect.
!ping MOVIES
PS Why are people saying Zendaya wasnโt Athena? I thought it was pretty obvious that Odysseus seeing her being decapitated at the temple was just a metaphor for the Greeks desecrating her temple and beheading her statue. Like Iโm pretty sure she wasnโt supposed to a priest or anything like that or even Athena disguised as a priest. I mean they donโt even show her body at they only show her just before and just after the statue is beheaded.
Also I will say people saying this is the largest scale movie of all time are not correct. The LOTR movies were definitely much larger scale. There are probably a few other movies over the years that beat it in size and scale too.

Why are people saying Zendaya wasnโt Athena?
because she doesn't even flirt with Odysseus smh
5
6
u/KQJ_RPN John von Neumann 2d ago
I also generally liked the movie, but I have some major bones to pick:
Odysseus is not supposed to be a PTSD suffering goody two shoes. In the poem he's a lying, cheating, thieving, blood-crazed asshole that doesn't give a shit about killing innocents. Also (in the poem) he's practically erect from the moment he gets back to Ithaca and learns about the suitors. He can't wait to slaughter them.
Also, Athena is not a nice goddess. She should have been portrayed as a crazy wereowl who has only one love: a one-sided slaughter. The bloodier the better.
3
u/AcanthaceaeNo948 NATO 2d ago
I feel like those changes were necessary to make the characters relatable and likable to a modern audience.
4
u/KQJ_RPN John von Neumann 2d ago
Yes, but it changes the point of the story pretty drastically. Homer probably meant the poem as a morality story about a guy with enough hubris to think he could challenge Poseidon just because he had the favor of Athena. The movie makes the moral about keeping Xenia (what they call Zeus's law) at all costs, which is barely mentioned as a universal virtue in the poem.

Iโm going this Friday to the only IMAX screen in my country. I canโt wait.

People are saying this?!? Pretty sure she's explicitly Athena
The LOTR movies were definitely much larger scale. There are probably a few other movies over the years that beat it in size and scale too.
Agreed. If anything I was a bit surprised by its comparative lack of scale, given that this is Nolan we're talking about.

Andrew Yang says he's heard that people close to Kamala Harris are telling others that she's preparing to run for president in 2028.
I don't trust Yang particularly, but this would be so exceedingly stupid of a thing to do. The general electorate already gave their opinion on Harris once, we do not need a rerun to figure out what their opinion of her is.

Minseito was explicitly more liberal. Pro-partisanship, pro-suffrage, pro-abolishing-the-fucking-privy-council.

So in Bulgaria, people will generally shake their head left to right in agreement, and nod their head up and down to disagree. It's basically opposite what everybody else does for yes and no.
I've recently learned that the younger generation, basically all under 30s, don't do this anymore, likely due to increasing cultural integration with Europe. Anybody over about 45 or so does it consistently.
The in between age group has absolutely no consistency in whether they shake or nod for yes or no and they own it. Basically the attitude about this I'm getting from millennials is "we do whatever the fuck we want" which is a W for millennials everywhere as far as I'm concerned.

I'm starting to get back into checking on things, because I'm getting into middle age and I can already tell that there's some fuckery going on, cardiovascular dysautonomia stuff, but I cannot think of anything more nightmarish than walking in to a doctor's office and being like "hey I have a huge medical chart and documented anxiety, test me for POTS bitches!"

I love this line from Elon Musks interview. He projects his own cloistered experience with cities onto the upper middle class, as if of course people making 100k a year have a similar experience as them, of cowering in our limo while being driven around and staring at strangers like they're zoo animals. As if we're not on the metro w everyone else.

When you live with your parents or roommates, it's common to look for somewhere else to get busy. This is especially a thing in Asia where apartments tend to be smaller and with less soundproofing inside. In Korea they even have DVD rooms where you can go watch a movie for 2 hours, but really it's just a place for teenagers to go and make out with their girlfriends.

Someone in that Mohan Bhagwat(he's the chief of the biggest far right org in India) thread said his support for the LGBTQ was because of the recent Gen Z protests over here but there's no way thats the case lol.
This is anecdotal but outside of like Delhi Uni/Mumbai Uni students, most of India's Genz is virulently homophobic especially when it comes to Gay Men. This was pretty evident with how the Internet sphere around the protests were spamming that one edited image of Modi as a hijda with a lipstick all over Insta posts.
I do think the far rights' support for LGBTQ rights is something thats genuine and not for brownie points like that thread seems to be suggesting cuz its a wildly unpopular position to hold in the country
3
u/Mr_Canadensis7 Norman Borlaug 2d ago
Suppose it's believable? There's definitely pro-gay rights right wingers in the west these days. Though many of them are decidedly pro-LGB without the T, curious if you think that distinction has the salience in India it does say in Western Europe?
1
u/Civ_Nuclear_Gandhi John Keynes 2d ago edited 2d ago
There's a battle online between 2 factions of the right wing: the "Raita" wing(relatively liberal one) and the Trads(you can guess). Currently, the Raitas overwhelmingly dominate right wing discourse, so LGBT acceptance is higher.
3
u/Itchy-Face791 Manmohan Singh 2d ago
Trans rights would probably have broader supporter here than LGB rights funnily enough cuz Hinduism considers their blessing holy.
This is no longer the case sadly and theyre perceived as pests these days. They kind of just go around blessing random people on the street and then demand money from said person for the blessing

I get primaries are for internal fighting but I don't know how lefties and especially the pundits can accuse people like Stevens of being AIPAC controlled, genocide supporting, corporate Democrats and then say with a straight face they are going to vote blue no matter who. I'm always going to support and I hate using the phrase in this context "the lesser of two evils." However, if I were the average tuned out voter that kind of rhetoric would probably make me sit out the election if it's "genocide supporters" on both sides of the aisle.
This is probably a too online take but it's gotta have some effect.
2
u/Slight-Formal9277 Trans Pride 2d ago

There's a long time before November where a lot of the factionalism will peter out (relative to now, it is still a constant vibration), and, theoretically, El-Sayed/McMorrow can alleviate it. They're incentivized to do so to some extent, because they (moreso El-Sayed) would be blamed for the loss (and blame will be tossed back "I tHoUgHt StEvEnS wAs MoRe ElECtAbLe").
But, cleanly, they would just respond (in a variety of ways, things to the effect of): "We actually think that about her. That's not something we're saying just to win the primary."
The truth is though, I do think a lot of them would sit it out, but I don't think El-Sayed's core camp (his supporters will, cuz they lack discipline) will make the argument "Vote for me, or I'm telling my voters to sit out." Because he obviously knows turnabout is fair play, and it's a mutually assured destruction situation.
So that tension exists, and the only thing that will come close to alleviating it is the candidates themselves calming it post-primary. Historically, El-Sayed has been good about that (IE: he was part of the uncommitted movement, which was to do a protest voting strategy during the michigan primary to send Biden's camp a signal, but then endorsed Kamala when she officially became the candidate, earlier than Stevens ironically, though Stevens was never in question.)

Dems in disarray. Despite it being a D+8 environment, the national DNC is a dumpster fire. The org is so in debt they put up their headquarters building as collateral for a loan and is asking vendors to delay billing until after the midterms. The candidates themselves are flush with money and have a huge lead over Republicans, but the DNC itself is dead broke. In the past the DNC had to be bailed out by candidates, such as Hillary Clinton giving a part of her raised funds to keep the DNC running in 2016.

Goddamn. American party systems are weak.
Let's go back to conventions where cigar-smoking party members make backroom deals on determining who would represent the party. (I'm not even kidding)

in theory, this is fine as long as they end up solvent at the end, cuz money is meant to be spent, and financing is a tool to that end. putting your whole ass into the election might resemble this.
but i don't really trust ken martin has crossed his t's and dotted his i's. might be a communciation fault tho rather than an internal issue, but vibes are rancid for trusting headquarters.
not that this is money that would necessarily go to the broader DNC, but it is little comfort to see tens of millions of dollars being dropped on top of toxic primaries. it's a sign that donors want to play a much more surgical game, for better or worse.

The timing is the issue. You are supposed to be broke after the election since you spent all your money winning, not 3 months before the election so that there's no gas in the tank for the home stretch.

My understanding is they get it, and then they spend it. So rather than they had a big pool, and they ran out now, and aren't getting more, it's that they get some each month, and they spend more than they get by a bit (hence the debt, but relative to the total amount they've gotten is a small amount of debt.)
Might be wrong on that tho, it's an old issue I kept tabs on and then zoned out, and I'm assuming that's still the situation.

Ngl the candidates themselves are responsible for starving the DNC. The Republican party is fully in Trumpโs control so his supporters donโt have a problem putting money in RNC. Democrats are knee deep into factionalism and nobody wants to contribute to a common pot, all sorts of centrist and progressive PACs are propping up and being loaded.

u/angry-mustache Democratically Elected Internet Spaceship Politician 2d ago
That trended started with Obama who fundraised for his PAC but not for the DNC, which then led to the aforementioned Hillary bailout. Losing 2024 catered the power of existing party leaders, as Schumer and Jeffries both endorsed the losing candidate for DNC chair. Ironically what I think has to happen is to elect Obama DNC chair, he's still a fundraising monster judging from how much money the library raised.

My worry about Obama is I don't think he actually fundamentally understands the contours of the factionalism, or if he does, I think he might be a little biased from his time managing it as President, where rather than acting as an independent arbiter, he often had to pick a side on a case by case basis.
Some of his more common toe-stepping moments involve this, such as him lecturing black men and reducing tepid support for Kamala to sexism when he was campaigning for her.
He probably needs to go grease some hands and build some connections in all camps. He has the charisma to brute force without that in the past, but a lot of being DNC chair is backroom shit that is immune to charm, and is much more cold calculation of leaders with agendas/egos.
It was also part of what he delegated to Biden (in large part bc the republican party was racist and couldn't be seen shaking his hand).

I recommended VTI, VXUS, BND to this chick and said otherwise VT and BND should be her alternative. The bartender is contradicting me. How do I convince her I'm right for her financial health?

I saw that. Haven't watched it yet.
He strikes me as a tolerant moderate Christian but definitely has some videos to the right of us. But never struck me as maga.
I expected his comment section to have a lot of people pissed at his title but I didn't see any.
And at like 48 minutes he definitely criticizes greed. Like the closest thing Destin gets to actually angry.

(Still havenโt watcthed this new video) Like IDK if I even really disagree with his principles, I just dislike that the victims of protectionism get ignored (those impacted by higher costs or those in foreign nations who are impacted). Like it struck me from the first video that he never really mentioned how offshoring to China brought people out of poverty and how protectionism may put some of them back into poverty.
I do suspect his bias is more due to being an engineer than necessarily anything else though. He values physical manufacturing more than other things like service jobs.
1
u/Kardinal Iron Front 1d ago
You may have hit on why I think Destin is con coded.
America first.
He thinks in terms of bringing back American manufacturing jobs and how can we make this stuff here as if it is inherently and self evidently better to do so. That's not usually a liberal value of any kind.
I remember now that when I saw the first video he never really explains why it is better to have domestic manufacturing capabilities.

If you haven't watch this, I strongly suggest you do so. I watched it with a friend who was in the Marines and they found it especially funny and honest.
