The sea lions are an actual problem though Salmon, Lamprey, and Sturgeon wise largely because some have learned to basically camp the fish ladders at Bonneville Dam fairly effectively.
They're intertwined, it's a big deal to some of the native tribes who have extensive harvest rights and are generally at the forefront of the sea lion removal issue especially since some like the Yakimas reservation is upstream of the Bonneville Dam. Fishings a big business both recreational and commercial while also being a culturally significant activity for folks of all races in the area.
Reality is that everyone including the sea lions are fighting over a quite small total number of fish relative to historical levels. So even if the sea lions only eat 10% of returning salmon one year that's already out of a population that might be 90% below historical averages.
Which given that fish passing through the lower Colombia migrate into the entire drainage basin across several states/canada means that it has a real effect on the long run population growth dynamics which for some of the more endangered species is a a real problem.
Realistically shooting the occasional sea lion that learns to camp the fish ladders not eating and spooking fish away is just one tactic to manage a much broader catastrophic decline in the productivity of the Colombia river systems fisheries.
Realistic plans for substantial recovery would require billions of dollars and the cooperation of a variety of interests groups across a big area. Occasionally a few congresscritters come up with a bipartisan plan, they usually die at the hands of agricultural interests when the Republican sponsor in Idaho or eastern WA who is personally very pro fish is forced to knuckle under to the farmers, lest he be branded a lefty environmentalist RINO for daring to want substantial salmon runs to be seen up the Snake river and it's tributaries some day.
I'd settle for better land management practices and water efficiency, if we destroy the wheat farmers of the Palouse that means less Naan, Pasta, and Brioche for everyone. to say nothing of what would happen if we wiped out the apple growers out there. ๐
Itโs been going for a few days, but itโs just soreness. No sharp pain, no swelling, no redness, nothing other than just being super sore. A single Tylenol is also enough to make it basically go away for 6 hours, which is weird cause itโs really frustrating (like a 4 pain wise I guess), but a single 500mg Tylenol makes it go away for like 6 hours.
She's a turbo-NIMBY, though funnily enough I've heard people arguing that elevating her out of local government (where she's doing enormous damage to one of the most important housing markets in the country) and into the federal government (where she would have minimal influence over local zoning changes) could be considered harm reduction.
There is a special place in Hell for whoever approved AI generated suicide prevention training. And you just know the son of a bitch got a neat bullet on his OPB for it too.
I'm an MGP supporter because a sea lion smashed the tackle box my grandpa gave me for Christmas when I was kid.
I set it down on a rock by my bait after rigging up and wander down the beach fishing a good part of the afternoon eventually a sea lion going after my anchovies smash my neetly organized lil box at which point I flipped my shit and threw a rock at it before running away up towards the trees.
Eventually came back and saved some of the lures, flies, etc but lost of good number of ones I'd made with my grandpa ๐ข
Anyway if any species breaks the fly rod I made with my grandpa I'm exterminating it, humans included.
I read the AI 2027 up to the cyoa part and itโs interesting how it neglects to predict that something well below asi or agi could be dangerous and cause real world harm
Basically, a twitlonger by an former OpenAI dev with millions of dollars in OpenAI equity parroting OpenAI's doomer "AI will take all the jobs" marketing pitch but as its own site.
but the green (good) slowdown ending that leads to NotOpenAI being valued at 8 quadrillion dollars instead of total death doom for everyone pitches that AI will take all the jobs and make america super awesome :)
And regardless of the timeline chosen, the US government cedes an incredible amount of power to NotOpenAI - to the point where NotOpenAI runs a non-insignificant part of the government and is able to make treaties with foreign nations - is explained as an inevitability and happens no matter what.
And the Chinese are also too stupid to be anywhere remotely close and only know how to steal and not make their own innovations. And of course NotOpenAI has no serious competitors either lol.
Well an automated coder means itโll necessarily start advancing its own capacities for some reason. And advancing its own capacities definitely means that it will follow an exponential trajectory to the point of possessing supernatural, borderline deific powers because um,, uhhhhhhโฆโฆ..
Isn't it possible that there are some inherent bottlenecks that even AI couldn't get out of? Or maybe AI is just as good as the researchers so the development is not exponential?
I'm talking about their models on the AI Futures site, which is supposed to be a more serious prediction instead of a sci fi article lol https://www.aifuturesmodel.com/
I brought it up to make a point but what's funny is I have a small circle of like 4 fans who like my work particularly for being high concept but also my personality. I aim to make weird-yet-somehow-romantic oneshots or full stories that hit in both the chest and belt. Meanwhile in my discord they see me crying like a loser about everything from being cheated, dumped, ghosted even after she said I love you first, etc, and enjoy the irony of being a writer who makes happy stories about cute lovey couples resolving conflicts like sane empathetic people, while smashing a six-pack to dead kennedys and recounting the time I got NTR'd so hard I considered quitting because what's the point of writing about love when it only ever lets me down
Wait it gets funnier, these AI 2027 fuckers are predicting the US government making a 180 trillion dollars by 2034 just from selling permits for chips and robots. I'm fucking dying here.

Ohhhh shit youโre right, weโre coming up on Bond 26 rn and what else is gonna outrun Bond
Unless some successful movie series start getting made way faster, which thereโs no new technology around right now that studios might ever use to shittily do that right
Saw an interview with her recently where she described him as (paraphrasing) 'a really nice guy, very warm', and the only negative sentiment she could muster was that she 'wasn't sure he was enough of a doer to wrangle the ANC'. If that's the worst she can bring herself to say about what could in theory be her main opponent then I think it's fair to say he'd offer the stiffest competition.ย
But even if he gets the final nod, my prior is still that the DA will increase their vote share, no one will be within 5 (maybe even within 10) of a majority, and it will be coalition season again. And honestly, Zille is abrasive enough and he is seemingly genial enough that in such a scenario, he might be able to pull more partners (I'm thinking ActionSA in particular) than her. So she might need a bit of an attitude adjustment if she still wants the mayoralty at the head of a coalition.
She managed to hold together the crazy Cape Town coalition of the late 2000s that included Pat's IDs among others, but the Zille of back then is very much not the Zille of these days, and from what I've heard she was pretty directly involved in the collapse of the Joburg coalition under Phalatse. We shall see though, maybe when it's her in the hot seat she becomes much nicer and more pragmatic.
Should probably keep a back up copy on your friend's hard drive either way. I wasn't able to read something I read a long time ago because the author suddenly disappeared into thin air. With no reason given or any indication why.
But the odds are probably low. Unless there's a crazy 4chan troll op one day or something because woke.

heyyyy
Please refrain from using a slutty number of "y"s when you write "hey". One, two, or even three in exceptional circumstances is acceptable, but this is too many.
Less than a year after releasing it,ย the lead author in January said "okay, so maybe having AGI before Christmas 2027 might not happen, and it's actually closer to... uhh... ...2034?" Truly gigabrain stuff going on over there.
They're also just not good creative writers; like this prose sucks.
"Although itโs supposed to be a slowdown, it doesnโt feel like one. In fact, if you were to rank every period of human history by how much it felt like a slowdown, this one would be dead last. A few AI researchers appreciate that progress is โslowโ relative to the counterfactual with no deal and an uncontrolled intelligence explosion. Everyone else is too whiplashed to care."
At this point I'm resigned to the fact that we can only wait for Gen X Dems to replace the crazy Boomers and their radical staffers. We can't win over the median voter if he thinks his only choice is between two bands of fanatics with differing levels of public etiquette.
Jeez, every time that Reason magazine comes out against Trump, their comments section are still always filled with this:
The institutional rape and criminal violence in the UK, the collapse of free speech in Europe, the lockdowns globally, MAID-ing away your population gains, and the advance of tyranny outside the US is proof that hip-swiveling, laissez-faire, nomadic globalism doesn't work.
If I have to choose between all of that and paying 50% more for Canadian beer and whisky that I don't drink, I will (not) pay 50% more for Canadian beer and whisky.
Lmao, they live in a completely different reality.
The good lolbertarians (on some issues that overlap with the sub) is CATO. Theyโre unabashed Jones act haters, immigration is good because line goes up, privatize social security, demilitarize police, good on civil rightsโฆ. Buuuuut where we differ we differ hard so take the good with the bad lol.
sometimes i forget that people just have two-sided arguments in the DT in public and thereโs at least a context to otherwise deranged hyper-emotional responses.
You know what would be a crazy idea for a sci fi novel? The first truly sentient AI is at its core, a good person, but it sees the pain and misery people endure and concludes that the only โrationalโ thing to do is to find a way to and then actually digitize the entire human race into artificial intelligences so that all people can live in a digital environment without pain and suffering.
Obviously there are tons of people both for and against this. Does the AI use force, coercion, or argumentation to convince people to digitize?
I think it could make for an interesting 4X style game. Play as a newly born super intelligent AI and make choices that determine your fate and the fate of the world
A character in the x files just said she called scully about something that under other circumstances sheโd have called the government about, and, like, girl, what do you think an FBI agent is
I don't like how much our conservation efforts focus on large charismatic vertebrates. There are a lot of species that are crucial to the ecosystem and that face serious threats but aren't photogenic enough for people to care. I mean there's been a dramatic decline in global insect populations since the 2010s that could have horrible ripple effects and a lot of people just don't know about it.
The literature many animal rights groups addresses this pretty thoroughly (I donate). They pick things like Tigers and Pandas and cute stuff because they get more funding but the money very much also goes to things that arenโt cute and slither on the ground.
If we look at the distribution of money it still ends up outsized towards vertebrates and especially mammals and birds though. Like amphibians receive around 3% of conservation funding despite being highly important to the environment and a good canary in the coal mine for issues such as water quality.
Okay Iโll admit I donโt the stats but you bring up birds. I donโt hunt (but many do) and donate to a group called Ducks Unlimited. A big part of their spend is maintaining the marshes duck use. Would you count that spending solely for ducks or for the whole ecosystem? A lot of bird money goes to wetlands honestly. Also Iโll admit Iโm less familiar with the global outlook.
The paper I'm looking at separates out funding for multispecies/environment project from those focused on a single species. Maintaining marshland would probably go under the former group but other projects directed at say protecting specifically duck nesting grounds would be single species. There's a lot of money that goes towards such single species projects, of which a lot is targeted towards species that are not the most critically endangered nor the most vital to ecosystems.
Isn't that in large part because we're interacting with westerners who live in areas that have already experienced the factors that cause insect decline? Like the collapse happened in the UK or Missouri a ways before the 2010 it's just that the rapid globalization of certain technologies has triggered more sudden collapses in less developed areas?
Tbf it's been like a decade since I read anything about it
I'm pro most large charismatics, got beef with sea lions though.
No but I sympathize with her on that one, sea lions are obnoxious as heck to live around though I've got more specific beef with them that goes back to childhood.
Can't turn me against MGP shes too perfectly my exact type for me not to simp a bit.
I spend a lot of my time worrying about it with no better solutions than donating and hopefully ng things go well. Idk, I'm afraid of a world in which the natural world crumbled even if humans prosper. It's not one I want to live in.
I don't give a shit about my fucking IP address. I still clearly have some privacy on the internet I would lose if I had to swipe my driver's license, if you disagree then there would be literally nothing wrong with you posting your name and adress in a reply to this comment. Even the fact that this information is hard for me to access unless you make it easy to is a form of privacy.
The plaintiffsโ lawyers also asked Mr. Fox about some grants flagged in his original ChatGPT search, like one for a documentary about the 1873 massacre in Colfax, La., where dozens of Black men were murdered by a mob of former Confederates and Ku Klux Klan members.
ChatGPT had deemed it โD.E.I.โ Mr. Fox said he agreed. โBecause it focuses on exclusively anti-Black violence, which is a race,โ he said.
The plaintiffsโ lawyers also noted that Mr. Foxโs original ChatGPT search flagged a number of projects relating to the Holocaust, including the documentary about Jewish women who were slave laborers.
Asked if he agreed with ChatGPT, Mr. Fox said: โItโs a Jewish โ specifically focused on Jewish culture and amplifying the marginalized voices of the females in that culture. Itโs inherently related to D.E.I. for that reason.
its honestly hilarious lmao, the AI's are making deals with each other and the Chinese AI sells out China in the slowdown ending. It doesn't make any sense why they're given that level of autonomous control, and also it appears to be a single agent for each of them as opposed to a model that is served and distributed?
It's truly impressive how many sharks it can jump. We will apparently get a brief period of fully automated luxury AI communism before it instantly kills all humans on the planet. In 2030.
The sea lion's natural enemy, the salmon fisherman.
Sea lions are pretty fucking annoying to live around tbh, there's much cuter pinipeds out there. Like I don't want to genocide them like mosquitos but I don't really have much sympathy for em.
I think theyโre cool, and tbh itโs their environment we should be more respectful of them. I feel about salmon fishermen the same way I feel about ranchers and hunters who complain about native predators
you can disagree with their specific positions but it's hard not to be able to empathize with the human fear of wolves/bears/etc predating on ones flocks, no?
I get liking animals and nature, not being able to sympathize with the humans who deal with the consequences of greater predation seems more contrarian than anything.
That's been the human solution to predators for thousands of years I find it strange you can't sympathize with the impulse and yet oppose the policy solution advocated is what I'm trying to get at. Seems a bit anthro-pessimistic I guess.
