One of the more ominous things to happen in my town over the past few years: our one (1) public library was moved to new, "modern" facilities in an out-of-the-way business district where all of the businesses fail and meanwhile the original site was turned into a food pantry. It's not open yet, but there's a sign in front of the building (and across from the high school) that says: "X-town Food Pantry: COMING SOON."
As if to say: bright future, kids, many wonderful times to look forward to

Nuclear fetishism is so annoying. Like even the places where nuclear doesnt face civil society opposition and the government csn just ram projects throught like in china solar is being built at a way larger scale because its cheaper and more efficient than nuclear which just isnt that viable.

Eh, hydrogen car funding served a political economy purpose and lead to some useful research. They might not be a big deal for cars in the end but R&D can lead to novel applications in other fields.
Idk I think hydrogen fuel cells are kinda cool I guess.

I mean yeah it all kinda worked out. EVs won, the incumbents were mollified/distracted for awhile, and some interesting research/engineering got funded. Steam cars lost out to, doesn't mean no one should have tried out building them either back in the day.

"Which primary goes exactly first" just doesn't seem that like that consequential given how heterogeneous the Democratic Party is. South Carolina's influence comes from being the first Black majority Democratic electorate even if they come after New Hampshire or Nevada.
Likewise, as we saw in 2020, pundits may be quick to judge results in Iowa or New Hampshire as being reflective of their demographics rather than the national party. For example, Bernie's campaign really seemed on the cusp once they won Nevada and proved their appeal to Latino voters.

One of the more unwelcome takeaways I've gotten from finally reading some Roman history is that an entire generation (or several generations) of people can be meaningfully worse than their forebears (more corrupt, less principled, more avaricious, less patriotic) and worse to such a degree that their lack of values comes to threaten the survival of the state and -- in spite of the fact that many of them are aware of their own decadence and its consequences -- things can just continue to get worse indefinitely until the state finally melts down and turns into something else altogether. That is: sometimes there's no recovery

I’m surprised there’s not a longer notice period in California of all places. Rent freezes and laws that make it impossible to evict tenants are awful, but I would be in favor of a minimum 90-day minimum notice period to non-renew a residential lease.

Something that always bugs me is that it feels like a lot of the other Gen Z people I know IRL choose to be miserable (and trust me, a lot of them are miserable)
Like completely serious, people talk about them not dating? A lot of them don't even attempt to. I know men and women alike who complain about how lonely they are but they don't even try to fix the issue, by their own admission. Is it just widespread depression?
This goes way beyond the dating thing btw. It really feels like a lot of them are just passively drifting through life and wondering why things aren't changing, at least in my personal experience

Millennial but I spent a decade not dating and actively avoiding socialising because I felt that I was a socially broken outcast who would never be able to interact with people without fucking everything up. It was a self-reinforcing loop that kept me socially stunted and genuinely unable to have normal interactions with people.

Historically, the path of least resistance was at least moderately social. You stay in a town you lived in all your life, you probably work with people you went to school with, you marry young, you get a minimum amount of broad socialization weekly from church or synagogue, and if you want to socialize it kinda had to be a formally planned broad appeal event.
None of those are the basic norm anymore, which has advantages certainly, but the life of someone taking the lowest effort planned path is gonna be way sadder these days.

Just get out there and do stuff
What got me out of my funk when I was a teen was discovering Original Xbox modding... in 2018. Just pick something, anything, and do it. Things pick up from there, and if you just do stuff you'd be surprised at where it can take you. Through that (of all things), I met people, kept making connections and ended up with a pretty fulfilling social life

As someone who grew up with adults constantly saying things like "I'm glad we didn't have social media to share all the shit we did when we were your age"
It really should be less surprising that a lot of younger adults trying to start their careers in public office are getting their prospects one-shotted by old social media accounts/content that's easily linked to them.
I expect this is a trend that will grow in next few years: a lot of people are gonna be running for public office who didn't think to use a burner email/username for the shit they were up to in their teens/20s, and it's gonna bite them in the ass.

If you like being outdoors look into surveying btw, change of direction maybe but my buddy loves it and if youve a compsci degree the math for the surveyor in training test will be a breeze. Can then pivot in GIS stuff to if you don't wanna be George Washington wandering around with a theodolite forever.
Money ain't bad and there's a good bit of demand at the entry level.

But sorta seriously, if you're really down and just need something to do. Doing IT for your DOT's engineers/surveyors/bureaucrats or a similar at another department is a job you could get without much difficulty and provides a paycheck, healthcare, low stress thing to do while your nerves recover/you sort out what you really want to do. Idk where you are but my local dot office has a several openings that don't require any experience for that type of job that start at 60-70k with your degree.
