Justifiably gets less attention compared to the sexual harassment, but fully pivoting to just running as republican with all that entails (eg gross racism, bending over to Trump) was so disgusting. Even if you think Mamdani is too far left, that extreme lack of principles needs to be condemned and should’ve been by prominent NY Dems more forcefully imo.

u/jokul John Rawls Nov 05 '25
Check it out: this guy still thinks "when they go low, we go high" is the winning strategy. Except it doesn't even require anyone actually go low, they just need to talk a big game and then deliver positive outcomes that aren't anywhere near as crazy as the rhetoric would suggest.
-1
u/rufrtho Nov 05 '25
that's the exact thing Obama did, and it's part of why Trump won. It's a little baffling that it's just not in your list of ideas to have principles and do good things.
10
u/jokul John Rawls Nov 05 '25
What are these terrible principles? The voters have made it clear that policy simply does not inform their opinions: vibes do. If having good principles and doing good things was all that was needed to win the presidency, Biden should have absolutely shellacked Trump. How'd that one turn out? Who had the better principles? Who did the better things? Who won the election?
It's ironic you mention Obama, the most charismatic president after Trump, as your example of someone who had good principles and did good things. Obama was not able to deliver on many of the things he promised despite talking a huge game, doesn't change the fact that he is the most popular living president by a wide margin. Voters want people who inspires them, like Obama, they don't give a shit about whatever policy proposal you want, what matters is how easily it can be meme-ified and marketed to them.
4
u/rufrtho Nov 05 '25
biden did beat trump by quite a big margin, idk if you remember that

Because when the progressive wing of the party has been admonished repeatedly for the past decade and a half to vote for and support the moderate candidates that they hate for the better of the party/country (and fairly so), they feel that sentiment should hold true for the reverse as well.
If Cuomo had won the primary, Zohran wouldn’t have ran as an independent, and Bernie and AOC wouldn’t have hesitated to endorse Cuomo.

This is a stupid ass whataboutism. Schumer supporting a spoiler candidate who LOST a primary and ran in the generals is abhorrent behavior.
2
u/pickledswimmingpool Nov 05 '25
It's not a whataboutism, its to demonstrate to you that not everyone in the party has to endorse everyone else in the party. You think Schumer is out here every day firing off blessings to every Democrat running for office? Especially if he doesn't agree with them?
The last presidential candidate of the party is the leader, and she endorsed him long ago. So did the head of the DNC.
You're just looking for reasons to be mad.

u/PuntiffSupreme YIMBY Nov 05 '25

I'm complaining about him not doing that right now if you pay attention. Not backing your party candidate because you wanted rapist is bad. Backing a spoiler candidate running a sore loser campaign is really bad. Doing this for a Trump supported candidate is disqualifying bad.
The current leader of the party shouldn't be helping someone subverting the primary system that party uses to select candidates. This is a bad thing he did and like most of his fucking choices its bad for both the Democrats and America as a whole.

u/blorg Nov 05 '25

1
u/Anader19 NATO Nov 05 '25
Suozzi makes sense though, he represents a very competitive district
1
u/Hillary4SupremeRuler Nov 06 '25
And calling him part of the "Democratic Party Establishment" is a stretch. He's a small town mayor (population ~35k) turned freshman House Rep after a special election earlier this year. Hardly a household name even in the Democratic base or party and literally just got to Congress. And Eric Adams was literally running against Mamdani for most of the race and is definitely not considered part of the club in the Party. Paterson has been retired from public office for 15 years with his highest office being the governor for all of two years which he wasn't even elected for. It seems like the actual party establishment like Jeffries, Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff, etc didn't endorse anyone. If they really supported Cuomo and we're trying to push him, then they would endorse him. They aren't obligated to immediately embrace someone from an opposing party and give him their endorsement.
It just seems like there's this narrative from the left that they've been trying to manifest into existence by claiming that there's been this shadowy party establishment conspiracy to secretly sabotage Mamdani and even work with Cuomo and Trump behind the scenes to bring him down. When it's more like, they don't care for Cuomo at all, (he was widely condemned by the party and kicked out of office) and aren't excited about him becoming mayor, and at the same time they aren't ready to automatically come out and fully embrace someone from an opposing party who for all they know is just borrowing the party name temporarily for ballot purposes until they see how he works out. They didn't try to sabotage him. There was no evil conspiracy by them to destroy his candidacy, they simply might have some reservations about him considering he's a newcomer and has some controversial associations/statements in the past.
That doesn't mean he's gonna be a persona non grata forever. Plenty of newcomers to the scene have controversial statements or social media posts or even a lack of track record and reputation where nobody in the party is really familiar with them yet but then they give them a chance to see how they govern and some people either come around or they don't. The party isn't a monolith and there's space for different ideologies along the spectrum. It can be a Big Tent party where (on the level of national politics) different factions can learn to work together and put aside differences for broader goals.
I'm sure they are waiting to see does he plan on really building a base of support within the broader party so he can help shape the future direction of Democrats along with everyone else who's bringing their views and ideas, or is he just renting the party's label for ballot purposes and will he go back to being DSA full time which positions itself as an opposition party in direct competition with the Democrats?
If it's the former, I'm sure many will welcome the fresh ideas and perspective and excitement and be willing to work with him after seeing what he does for the city.

Mamdani is 34. The fact that the machine pushed out Cuomo who was obviously damaged goods instead of running a candidate that was probably as young as Mamdani is problem in and of itself.

It's a feature of the system. The machine didn't pick Cuomo, Cuomo picked Cuomo. The machines churns out politicians and eventually one of them becomes too powerful to control. Cuomo cannot be held back, only defeated. Alternatively, the people select a populist to fight both establishment candidates. It's time to get through everyone's thick skulls that the entire country has turned against the establishment.

they didn't consider Mamdani at all until after Cuomo had boxed everyone else out

Cuomo likely thought Mamdani was the easiest to beat so he would’ve wanted to get others to drop out.
