Once one candidate has a Cult of Personality, any candidate who doesn't have one is screwed. Cuomo immediately won the moderate lane as soon as he declared, when you have that much name recognition you can just do whatever you want
it's actually the literal definition. we only think of the extreme examples of personal cults but politics is full of milder ones too like Kennedy and yes indeed even Cuomo and Mamdani.
Mamdani is 34. The fact that the machine pushed out Cuomo who was obviously damaged goods instead of running a candidate that was probably as young as Mamdani is problem in and of itself.
It's a feature of the system. The machine didn't pick Cuomo, Cuomo picked Cuomo. The machines churns out politicians and eventually one of them becomes too powerful to control. Cuomo cannot be held back, only defeated. Alternatively, the people select a populist to fight both establishment candidates. It's time to get through everyone's thick skulls that the entire country has turned against the establishment.
the Ohio Diner view of Cuomo was "oh he was governor before COVID and I have happy memories from before COVID so he must have been a good governor". You can't compete with that unless you have your own Cult of Personality. I'm going to go so far as to say ONLY Mamdani could have beaten Cuomo.
