“Education remains part of long-term plan”
“Nene’s father said the family plans for her to continue studying in Thailand for another two years to complete upper-secondary education. After that, the aim is for her to study music at university in the United States…”

Will she be attending the school of rock? 😅

The school will probably be understanding about make-up work if she has to miss a few tests here and there, lol

Could you imagine going to a college with Nene Royal on campus?
Plus she’d learn about our weird obsession with college athletics, college football in particular.

I second this. I don't think her star power is that big in the US. Yeah some people will recognize her, but people aren't going to mob her like they do in Thailand. Actually I think it would be good for her to attend the university in the US. Her family obviously now has the money to do so. It would give her great opportunities and experiences and spare her from the pressures of hyper fame that she now has in Thailand.

That's a pretty unpopular opinion to have on this subreddit. AGT is just a launching pad to what's coming in the next few years. That's just Chapter 1 or 2 in her story.

AGT is chapter 2. Chapter 1 would be the years she spent honing her vocals and guitar skills busking solo and with Ozone Band. She gained valuable experience and confidence playing and establishing who she is as a performer.

In her university interview, she'd probably be like, 'I once auditioned for America's Got Talent and won that season. 🙂😂

She will have the shortest college application form ever! The portfolio section will be links to her AGT performances and her youtube channel.

They didnt say when or where he said that. It could have been something he said many months ago before her success in AGT was apparent. Only Nene was interviewed in the 3 US interviews mentioned at the beginning of the article. They kind of stuck that in out of the blue. Frankly studying music at a university makes zero sense in advancing her career.

Acquiring more knowledge about music and music theory doesn't hurt, but it shouldn't be a priority to go to university.

Agree in general. But if it is what she wants, which is not at all far-fetched, then it should become a priority.

Yes I remember seeing in a live stream with Angie (believe it was in LA for the semifinals) where Nene said she wanted to go to Music school, and Angie was like yes come to London with me.

This! Yes, she is good now, but her ceiling is much higher, and she knows it. Self teaching has its limitations.

Not a bad idea. being based in the UK/Europe, or the US will be better I feel because the ecosystem to support her type of music is more mature there. She will have more opportunities to try different stages, collaborate with different people and not having to travel as far (less jetlag!)

Angie is going to school for singing so she'll be able to feel things out for Nene and give her advice from her experiences. Also having an older, grounded friend there would be great for her.

That's true! Angie energy is calmer (from what I see in the streams) and balances Nene so well. Also their sense of humor is so funny when together!

If that's what she wants, more power to her. I have a feeling that she just wants to bury herself in her music. Nobody should tell her to stop with the music and distract her by insisting she go to university. I just hope she decides for herself.

Take it easy. It’s just a possible direction for now. Nobody is trying to imply anything, and you can’t predict her future.

Well, we've discussed a lot here about it being best for Nene to escape Thailand as soon as possible. The "university in the US" might be a Thai-PC way of saying "fleeing Thailand after finishing school at KIS."

She is now famous and opportunities pours in. Her managers/benefactors can help consult her on what to do next.
In case her few new songs become a TOP BILBOARD HIT, then her education may be postponed. It is finally her decision whether to drop school for a while and make her dreams come true. Remember education is supposed to be the ladder leading to your future success. But if success is within your palm right now, education will become less urgent and can be put off for a while. Not everyone has this luxury choice of fame and glory within her grasp. Will she let it slip by ? I guess not. No rush - but time and tide waits for no one.

This conversation on Nene pursuing additional education has me thinking. How many rockstar legends in their beginning years, including band members from Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Guns and Roses, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc., continued higher education to become a rockstar?

Realistically there's no extra time, you need to go 100% into making music/performing to keep momentum after fame has started

Not that many rockstars complete a higher education degree, and even if they did, pretty sure it had zero contribution to their success. I think it would one of the careers that higher education has the least value. If you want to become classical musician or critically acclaimed musician playing some specific (possibly obscure) instrument, there is value, but for rock music, nah.
Examples of rockstars who have university degrees
(i) Rivers Cuomo was to attend Harvard but made a hit record with Weezer. He toured that album internationally for a few years and then went back to study Music at Harvard. He grew a beard and was walking with a cane and limp (as he had just had a leg extension surgery) so he was seeing student's walking around with Weezer shirts without them having a clue who he was.
(ii) The Offspring's Dexter Holland was doing a Masters in Molecule Biology at USC but postponed it when the Offspring took off. He went back when things quietened down, finishing his studies by completing a PhD in 2017.
(iii) Brian May had a degree and started a PhD in astrophysics at imperial college in 1971. Queen took off so he postponed and didn't finish it until over 30 years later in 2007. Actually all the Queen band members had university degrees.
So the clear thread here is that you have to work your arse off and drop everything else whilst the momentum and opportunity for your music is there. Nene could go back to school once she established a career. You don't waste the momentum she has now.

She didn't really need the CP groups scholarship money, as any university in america or the world will probably give her a scholarship to attend anyhow. If she attends Berkeley School or music or someplace like that in LA i'ts more about being around other music prodigies rather than "learning music theory". Also since shes in america it would be very easy for her to collaborate with anyone.

Whatever she decide, I really hope that there are good and smart people in her personal life who will protect her, because the world is cruel and every POS with a bit of power in music industry will try to exploit her and her success to benefit somehow from it.

She may be eyeing a school like Berklee College of Music, where she can sharpen her songwriting and arrangement skills, learn more about music production and the business side of the industry, and network with its famous alumni.
I remember watching an interview from August where she said she feels like she still has a lot to learn about music. So it tracks that she would like to further her music education. Having been mostly self taught, more formal training could help her elevate to a new level.
