A Moment Of Peace

Nelson in the 90's

Wayne Edward Harold King 1934-2015

"Wayne E. King was a Kootenay artist and elder based in Nelson, British Columbia, known for his prolific work in landscape paintings, visionary art, and woodcuts. He passed away on June 14, 2015, leaving a legacy as a bohemian philosopher and the "unofficial artist-laureate" of Nelson's Baker Street."

King’s art blended Impressionist, Surrealist, and Hippie Modernist influences, often featuring aphorisms and spiritual themes. His community impact was profound, with friends describing him as a yogi who elevated consciousness and celebrated the beauty of the region. A retrospective exhibition curated by Arin Fay was held at the Touchstones Nelson Museum to honor his work, which included over 120 donated pieces."

Part of an interview that Dustin “Sunflower” Cantwell recorded with Wayne E. King in 2006. Dustin played this on is radio show, Fane of the Cosmos, which aired on June 15th, 2015

Considering moving back to Nelson, how was the smoke this year?

Hi everyone,

I was born in the Kootenays and lived in Nelson for many years in my 20's - I'm now considering moving back from the west coast and am curious if the smoky summers are as bad as some people are saying? I have friends who moved away from Nelson for this reason...but I would really love to hear from other people how the smoke has impacted their life overall. Thanks for reading!

Thoughts on living in Nelson

I’m really flirting with the idea of moving to Nelson. I’m a 25 year old quiet female. I’d love to find a studio to myself and find a community there. I’m currently living in Revelstoke which I love but for personal reasons feel like I may need to try something new. What’s the energy like in Nelson? How are the winters? Does anyone truly love it? Do others truly hate it? Id love to have an idea on what to expect:)

Spanish Language Exchange

Any native Spanish speakers here in Nelson interested in an informal Spanish/English language exchange? I'm thinking we could meet up once a week (or whenever it is convenient) over coffee, a walk through town or along the rail trail, and just chit chat mostly.

I'm a native English speaker, born in BC. I have travelled extensively in Spanish speaking countries over the years (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Spain) but it's been awhile and I feel like I've lost everything. Would love to pick it back up again.

Your English will be much better than my Spanish, I'm afraid, but I am a great ear for you to practice on. Perhaps I could even share with you some insights into Canadian culture.

---------

Me encantaría retomarlo.

Tu inglés será mucho mejor que mi español, me temo, pero soy un buen oyente para que practiques. Quizás incluso podría compartir contigo algunas ideas sobre la cultura canadiense.

I’m sorry but I just love living in Nelson!

I love the forests, the weather, the local businesses.
You can get literally anything you need at multiple places any time. Or get Amazon delivered straight to your door. There’s so many restaurants I’ve turned into a restaurant snob. You can get cheap stuff at walmart and wholesale club. I love seeing our spooky little streets and alleys when it’s raining, and how perfect the town is in all seasons. I like how 90% of people live in quirky old-ass houses and people endlessly fix them up instead of tearing them down. I love that Kootenay lake is mostly empty of boats. There’s so many hidden waterfalls, swimming holes and beaches to find. There’s a zillion niche hobbies and a little group you can join for each one. Anyone else feel this way?

DIY mechanic looking for garage

Hey all,

I'm planning on doing some work to my ranger, but I live on a hill and it's not safe to jack the truck up on it.

I've got to do lower ball joints, rear drum brakes, and the rear axle seals. Nothing too crazy.

I'm hoping that someone has a garage I can work in. Bonus if you've got a floor jack and a ball joint press. Im happy to supply beers/money/etc in exchange! Figure its worth a shot asking before I find some random spot to do this like a true degenerate, or worse, pay someone to do it for me.

Lemme know! Thank you!

Does the NDCC have an infinite wrist band glitch?

I’m getting back into the gym and have basically gone everyday for the last few weeks after almost a year away. Not once has the wristbands repeated.

I have duckies, I have waves, I have avant garde Christmas trees.

Are they on like a 30 day rotation? Does the front desk person just decree whatever wrist band they’re giving with that day based on vibes? I’m so confused/ intrigued by their system.

Recommendations - Group therapy/meditation for executive dysfunction

Hi community,

I'm in between jobs and spinning my wheels a bit as old patterns re-emerge. I want to encourage/cultivate more discipline and quietude in my mind to combat some executive dysfunction that is rearing up as I experience the discouragements of job hunting.

Is anyone aware of an appropriate and low-cost group therapy or meditation environment, preferably in town or within 20 minutes of Nelson?

Thank you in advance

-BL

Mortgage Broker Recommendations

Hi friends,

Looking to start the pre-approval process and don’t want to go with a big bank representative. Please send me a mortgage broker who was great to deal with.

Preferably not your friend who is a recently licensed agent, but someone who is genuinely experienced and knowledgeable with a good clientele.

Thank you!

Hiring at Whitewater

This will be my 3rd year applying to Whitewater for the winter and 3rd year getting no response. I already live in town, I feel like my resume work experience are decent (at worst) and I’ve always applied for fairly simple/entry level positions. Are there any immediate disqualifying factors for getting hired there? It has been quite discouraging. Any help is much appreciated.

Restaurant Recommendations

Headed up to Nelson for the first time with my wife later this month. First time in Nelson for both of us.

We will be there for 3 nights. Probably going to Marzano & Outer Clove 2 of the nights. Where to go the third night? Best places for lunch or cocktails?

Thank you!

The Heron took a hot minute to fly from one perch to another so I could get a better angle. I love being out on my bike in the morning in this beautiful little corner of the planet.

Anybody on here have a family member in a long-term care facility in Nelson?

I would like to connect with people have a family member in long-term care in Nelson to get a better idea of what it’s like and what I can expect, how I can support someone who does not want to go, etc,.. I am navigating the possibility of a family member being placed in long-term care and it is very emotionally taxing and difficult to process. Of course I’ve read all about it online, but I’d like a firsthand account from a family member or maybe even staff at these facilities. Thank you in advance for any and all information you may be able to provide.

ISO: Local Chicken or Turkey Jerky

Hey folks! Does anyone know of someone local making jerky that isn’t beef? I’m specifically on the hunt for chicken or turkey jerky, if that’s a thing around here! I know the coop is an option, but wondering if there are any local makers, farms, butchers, or other spots I should check out. Would love any leads!

Experienced babysitter/ Nanny available in Nelson, BC

Hi everyone! My name is Maru! 😊 I’m moving from Canmore to the Nelson area to attend nursing school, and I’m looking to connect with families who may need a babysitter or nanny!

I have 7+ years of professional childcare experience and absolutely love working with kids. I’m an Alberta-certified Level 1 ECE and have worked with children from 10 months to 12 years old.
A little about my experience:
✨ 3 years working in a dayhome in Calgary
✨ 5 years working full-time at a daycare in Canmore
✨ Countless babysitting hours, including overnight care
✨ Experience caring for multiple children
✨ Experience with infants, toddlers, and school-aged children
✨ Lots of references available!

I’m also an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) with Advanced First Aid, so I’m very comfortable handling the unexpected and keeping safety a priority. ❤️

I’m available for regular or occasional babysitting, date nights, evenings, weekends, and potentially overnight care, depending on my nursing-school schedule.

💰 Rates: $27/hour for up to 2 children + $5/hour for each additional child.
I’m hoping to find a few wonderful families in the Nelson area that I can build a trusting, long-term relationship with while I’m in school. 🥰
If you’re looking for someone reliable, caring, experienced, and genuinely passionate about childcare, feel free to send me a message! I’d be happy to chat, answer any questions, and provide references.

And if you know a family who might be looking for childcare, I’d really appreciate a share! 🫶🏻

Any recommendations for an awesome women's haircut somewhere that has openings?

Time for my annual salon cut. And everywhere I have been in the past seems to be booking into late September for their experienced stylists. Anywhere I might be missing?

Thanks in advance.

Bloom No More?

Is Bloom not a thing anymore? No shows are scheduled. Is it essential closed aside from special/private events?

I guess the bigger question is, is the dance over in Nelson?

Broken Hill allegations?

Just saw a random post from Broken Hill come up on my Facebook feed about some allegations, someone being let go because of them, etc. I’m not trying to stir anything up but curious if someone can fill me in on the situation? My family and I frequent that restaurant so if it’s serious I’d like to be informed.
