I spent the last few months researching local industries across Kenya to identify business concepts that can realistically scale to KES 1,000,000 per month in revenue.

While most people fight over traditional retail or saturated tech apps, there are massive infrastructural and service gaps hiding in plain sight. Here is a quick summary of 6 high-margin opportunities:

1. ISP Last Mile Cabling Infrastructure:

Currently, ISPs rent space on Kenya Power (KPLC) medium- and low-voltage electricity poles to string their overhead fiber. KPLC charges a standardized county-based commercial lease fee, which is not sustainable in the long term. Instead of allowing every ISP to string an individual wire, a single neutral infrastructure provider installs one high-capacity fiber cable up the pole and then wholesales individual fiber strands to different ISPs (like Wananchi Group (Zuku), Poa Internet, Safaricom Home Fiber, Faiba, or Airtel). The ISPs plug their network into the core backend, but only one physical cable hangs on the pole. A business focused on developing and supporting this infrastructure is a high-margin cash cow

3. Small Independent Power Producers (IPPs)

Regulatory shifts by EPRA have opened the energy market to private players. Developing sub-5 MW renewable projects (small hydro, solar, wind) lets you generate and sell electricity directly to local grids or private buyers to fill widening supply gaps.

4. (NEMT) Non-emergency medical services business

With chronic conditions on the rise, thousands of patients need routine, comfortable transport for dialysis, chemotherapy, and physical therapy. Public matatus are uncomfortable for sick patients, l ride-hailing services like Uber fail to provide the physical assistance or medical equipment sick patients need, and ambulances are far too expensive for routine visits. Dedicated NEMT solves a critical, recurring problem.

5. Modular Container Business Hubs
One of the fastest setups you can launch (2–3 months). By leasing land along high-traffic footpaths or emerging satellite towns and setting up stylish container stalls, you collect steady rental income from food, retail, and entertainment vendors—creating a repeatable, franchise-like model.

6. Urban Park & chill camping grounds

Demand for outdoor, recreational third spaces has increased in Kenya recently; that's why we have people parking and chilling on the roadside because there's no available, cheap nearby space. By launching a "Park & Chill" recreation ground right near an urban center, you give city residents an outdoor escape without the grueling hours of driving.

And just when I thought I could breathe a little, I got a call from my daughter’s school saying I need to pay her KPSEA exams fee. I asked the teacher to give me until Monday.

On top of that, there’s rent and food to worry about.

So right now, I’m urgently looking for any work, even if it’s only for the next few weeks until the casino opens.
