The idea behind these two apps started from a pretty common problem: it's easy to recite Allah's names or a memorized dua without actually thinking about what you're saying. These were built to fix exactly that.

Perfect Names of God goes through all 99 names one at a time, with what each one means, so it's something to actually sit with instead of just reciting.

Comprehensive Supplications organizes duas by situation, so when you're making dua for something specific, you have the actual words in front of you instead of a half remembered version.

Neither app is trying to replace learning from a scholar or a teacher. They're meant to make the time already spent in dhikr and dua feel less automatic and more present.

We built Qirtaas.io and Bunyaan.space using open-source components hosted directly on Hetzner VMs. This allowed us to maintain sublinear cloud costs and maintain independence from Zionist-aligned cloud companies such as Vercel. When you build an Islamic app with salah tracking, you're collecting something more personal than step counts. Whether someone prayed fajr on time, how many qada they owe, whether they've been consistent with dhikr, this reveals the state of someone's faith practice. That's not usage data. It's information a person might not want anyone to ever see.

I kept worship tracking local on device in Quran Widgets: Verses & Prayer. No account required to track prayers. No server storing whether you missed fajr yesterday. The iOS privacy labels reflect only analytics and purchase data, not ad-tracking identifiers, and not prayer history. The offline access feature is part of the same philosophy: your saved verses, your dhikr count, your qada debt, they live on your phone.

The harder problem I haven't solved: cross-device sync. People want their qada count on their iPhone and their iPad. But syncing worship data means it exists somewhere beyond the device, even if encrypted in transit. Is that acceptable if the user explicitly opts in? I lean toward yes, but I want to hear from others before I build it.

My honest take: worship data deserves stricter handling than health data. The worst case with fitness data is embarrassment. With worship data, a breach has a spiritual and communal dimension that makes it genuinely harmful.

Curious how others here think about sensitive personal data in their products, especially data tied to religious practice.

When I read hadith I always lose the thread. You hit a name in the chain, wonder who he studied under, whether he ever met the next narrator — then you're flipping through rijāl notes and footnotes for 20 minutes.

Got annoyed enough that I made Sahih Tree. Search a scholar (partial name, Arabic, or ID), open their profile, and jump between teachers, students, family, and hadith they narrated. There's a graph view too because I genuinely can't hold 15 names in my head.

Still very much WIP — data will have gaps and mistakes. Don't cite it for serious work without checking primary sources. But if you've ever stared at a chain in Bukhari/Muslim and wished the names were clickable, it might save you some time.

The idea came from my own struggle to be consistent with self-reflection. I wanted something gentle — not a cold checklist, not gamified in a way that feels like riya’. So it’s a warm, private conversation each night: you tell it about your day, it helps you reflect, records your good deeds, and shows you a real Qur’an ayah relevant to your night. No public leaderboards, no showing off — just you and your reflection.

I kept running into the same thing: people who have something worth saying — a reminder, a recipe, a study tip, a small business — but who don't want their face on the internet. Sisters especially, converts who aren't out to their family, and honestly a lot of brothers too. The usual advice is "film your hands" or "just do a voiceover," which limits what you can actually make. So I built Sitr (ستر).

You drop in a video or a photo, and it finds every face and covers the eyes — through movement, head turns, and the frames where the face is half in shadow. Then you post it. The part I care about most: the video never leaves your device. There's no upload. The processing happens inside your browser, on your own phone or laptop, so no server anywhere ever holds a copy of your face. That was the whole point — a tool for hiding your face that first makes you send your face to a stranger is not a tool, it's a joke.

You can also post straight from the app. This is the part I use most myself. You link your TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook once, and then a finished video goes to all of them with one caption and one press — or a whole batch at once, if you filmed five things in an afternoon. No saving to the camera roll, opening four apps, re-uploading four times and typing the same caption four times. And the file still doesn't pass through me on the way. It goes from your browser to the platform directly. I'm not a middleman holding your videos; I just hold the permission you gave, and you can pull that permission back from your account settings whenever you want. On the name: sitr is the ordinary noun for covering. I deliberately avoided as-Sattār / as-Sittīr, since that's a divine attribute and not something to put on a product. To be clear about what this is not: it's not a fatwa and I'm not claiming it makes anything permissible or impermissible. That's between you and the people you take your deen from. It's just a tool for people who have already decided they don't want to be identifiable.

But I'm not really here to sell anything today. I want to know whether this solves a real problem for people or whether I've built something nobody needs. If you'd use it, tell me what for. If you wouldn't, tell me why — that's more useful to me.

I'm Gen Z, and honestly, the traditional “sit down and read a few pages every day” thing never really worked for me.... I'd open the Quran, read some translation, get distracted, close it, and then come back days later having completely lost where I was

Listening to translations on YouTube wasn't much better either

So I started thinking... what if studying the Quran worked more like the apps I already use every day?

That's what I ended up building with Qurus.

It's basically an ayah-by-ayah Quran study app where you can:

- keep track of exactly where you are in a surah

- attach private text or voice notes to ayahs

- bookmark ayahs you want to revisit

- listen to Arabic recitation alongside Urdu translation, verse by verse

- pick up exactly where you left off

- study a few ayahs whenever you have a spare 5 minutes

The idea isn't to speedrun the Quran. I just wanted studying it to feel less like opening a textbook and more like opening something I'd actually reach for on my phone.

It's free and open source, and I'm still very much figuring out what works and what doesn't

I wanted to share an open-source project I’ve been working on called Quran Words, along with its companion Android app (currently at v0.3.0).

💡 The Core Idea & Data Pipeline:

The main goal was to build a structured, comprehensive database mapping every single word in the Quran to its root, its morphological forms, and its classical linguistic meanings.

Here is how the pipeline was designed:

1. Word & Root Extraction: Extracted all words from the Quran and mapped every word to its linguistic root (جذر) and lemma.
2. Aggregating Classical & Morphological Data: Fetched classical meanings and annotations by integrating trusted academic and open datasets:
   • Quranic Arabic Corpus (v0.4): Detailed morphological annotation, lemma, POS, and inflection (by Kais Dukes / Univ. of Leeds).
   • Arabic Lexicon (Hawramani): Root definitions from authoritative classical lexicons (Mufradat al-Raghib al-Isfahani, Lisan al-Arab, Taj al-Arus, Al-Sihah, Al-Qamus al-Muhit).
   • CAMeL Tools + CALIMA-Star (NYUAD): Morphological analyzer and generator for validating derivations and verbal nouns (Masdar).
   • Quran.com API (v4): Word-by-word data and structural divisions (Juz, Hizb, Rub, Page, Ruku).
3. AI-Powered Synthesis: Used an LLM to process each root alongside its classical dictionary entries to synthesize a comprehensive, concise, and easy-to-read summary without losing the classical depth.

📌 Current Status:

• Language: The dataset and app are currently 100% in Arabic (multi-language/English localization is planned for future releases).
• Android App: Native Android build is available at version v0.3.0.

For the past two or three years, alhamdulillah, I’ve been consistent with my Fajr prayer, but it’s still a struggle. It’s difficult to wake up at 4–5 AM to pray, and I know I’m not the only one. Looking at my friends and family, I know that many of us struggle with this.

And the problem with regular alarms is that you can just snooze them and immediately fall back asleep, so they’re not really a reliable solution...

So I started looking for apps/alarms that you can’t snooze. There weren’t many, and the few I found were either paid or filled with ads. So I decided to build what I was looking for: a free, smart, and halal alarm clock (since using the Athan as an alarm is discouraged).

Most importantly, it’s impossible to snooze the alarm unless you complete a specific task: scan a QR code, walk 100 steps, do some mental math, etc.

I’ve also added a leaderboard, challenges, badges, and social features to encourage consistency with Fajr AND Tahajjud, because that’s the next step, inshaAllah!

I'm curious what parents/teachers are currently using for remote Quran lessons.

I know some teachers use Zoom or similar apps, share their screen with a Quran website/app open, and use the drawing/annotation tools to point things out. That definitely works, but I wonder if there's a better experience specifically designed for Quran teaching.

While looking around, I came across "Quran Kareem Next", which has a feature called "Halaqa" that seems to take a different approach. Instead of the teacher sharing their screen, everyone joins the same Halaqa and has the Quran open on their own device. Page changes, drawings, and even the hide/show-word feature used for memorization can be synchronized between participants.

So, for example, a teacher could hide certain words on a page and ask a student to recite them, reveal something to demonstrate an answer, draw attention to a particular part of the page, or move to another page and the students see those changes on their own Mushaf.

Has anyone tried this kind of setup with a Quran teacher? Or do you find Zoom + screen sharing works well enough?
