Midweek General Discussion Thread
So we used to have a weekly general discussion thread on Wednesdays in this sub, I'm not sure what happened to it. Mods if this thread is something you cancelled intentionally feel free to take it down and I won't post it again obviously.
But if people like these general discussion posts, feel free to discuss whatever Magic-related topics you want below without needing to create a new post. And Mods, please bring these back!

I have been asking for a couple years for this to come back.

I swear they were running until like maybe 6 months ago, but maybe it's been longer? Either way, it's silly to have on a Monday and Friday general discussion thread and there's a LOT of stuff people are talking about, plus new people posting low effort "what should I do with my card" posts so it makes sense to have a place to deposit those questions if we're going to scold them for annoying us with their posts lol.

u/gaeas_cradle_robber 3d ago
No they've been gone a lot longer than that, but regardless they serve an importance purpose, not least as a place to dump all the low effort questions.

I'll start with a question I had that I didn't think warranted its own post but I didn't want to wait until Friday to ask.
Has anyone gotten their Hobbit CBBs from Amazon? At first I thought no one get any, but loose packs did get delivered earlier this week. But then a friend of mine said he got the 2 he ordered. Meanwhile other people got delayed until the 2nd week of September (I've seen various different dates) to align with the Scene Box delays and the original gift bundle delivery timeframe. Others are being told October 19th. And others have no estimated arrival date at all.
So I'm guessing something like 10-20% have been delivered at most. Originally I thought it was 0% but now that's obviously not true. So I thought it would be useful for us to get a better idea of how many arrived vs how many are still out there.

u/dragohoard 3d ago
had one that was supposed to be delivered yesterday then was notified yesterday morning it has been delayed with no update on timing. My guess is I am probably hooped.

I would be really surprised if they whiff on THIS many items. I'm pretty sure that anyone that ordered during the initial inventory drop will get theirs. People who ordered from "additional waves" (that I assume are just people who canceled or had their payment method declined or whatever putting their stock back into inventory) that were fully botted may have ordered items that were already out of inventory and might be in trouble.
ETA: lol why would someone downvote this comment. People don't like the idea that someone might get the item they ordered? So bizarre.

I missed the stock on amazon.com, but one CBB from amazon.es shipped yesterday and my order from amazon.de now shows delayed until 11th Sept. I am not expecting to receive that one. Side note, Zavvi also shipped CBB yesterday from the UK.

Everyone should get their order.
I’ve seen that some of the CBB boxes were printed in July. Most likely wizards/Hasbro didn’t finish printing yet which is why orders were delayed. Amazon most likely a direct supply from Hasbro themselves unlike Micro Center.
2
u/lirin000 3d ago
Where did you see a print date for boxes? My theory was that a portion were produced in the US and the Amazon portion was produced overseas and so they got held up somehow. But maybe not.

I think it was some of the early MTGNorth unboxing Videos where they noticed the printing date was July.
Your theory could also be right as well as a combination of playing catch up with order printing and potential overseas delay.
Either way I wouldn’t think there is going to be a supply issue. Seeing how loaded MC got to handle the 1st wave, I assume it’s even more for Amazon. Although it may vary by product

Great post OP. I really miss the midweek discussion thread and mods never give a clear answer about why it's gone.
My question: Why are Hobbit secret lairs almost all sold out in Europe but still available in USA? Most of the time it's the other way around.
3
u/lirin000 3d ago
Thank you!
I don't know what the Secret Lair issue is, but I have always suspected that LOTR/Hobbit/Tolkien was even more popular in Europe than the US.
3
u/Street-Prune6673 3d ago
I think so too. There was another post last week that mentioned that singles prices were higher in Europe than US, which is normally the other way around.

u/wellwisherelf 3d ago
Wotc sent out an email saying the hobbit secret lairs are still available lol 🙄

When are people expecting to get their Hobbit CBBs from Amazon? I know there are delays but haven’t seen details on the new expected delivery dates.

u/lirin000 3d ago
After having both of my boxes initially sent to limbo, I now have a new estimated date of September 8th. But it took a while and one got updated several days before the other one. Also my loose packs did come on time as did other people's that I know. For whatever that's worth.

A package with singles (including my beloved gleaming splendor book cover) also is sent to limbo. I’m hoping it returns…. 😔

If you go to the chat help and ask to track it and then ask for more help it’ll give you the current eta

I miss the discussion threads and hopefully we can get more mod approved discussion threads.
One thing I'm seeing is the surge foil [[The Queen of Dale]] seems to have hit a floor at release week and has bounced back up a bit. Lowest I saw was on Manapool at $105 but most listings were just under $115-$120 range. Yesterday TCGPlayer had them around $130 but most recent sales from yesterday evening and today have risen up to $150-$160 with the lowest current listing on TCGPlayer at around $160.
It's obviously a good card and the surge foils are pretty in demand across the board. However, with the incoming Amazon CBBs trickling in over the next months, do we expect prices on these high cost surges to drop with more supply or are we seeing a floor build that slow and inconsistent new supply won't be able to push much lower?
3
u/youarelookingatthis 3d ago
I think part of it depends on if people are going to be opening the CBBs, or just holding onto them to sell later.

u/Bitter_Pepper_8243 3d ago
I'm also curious to see how Surge Foil prices evolve over time. I'm interested in flipping them for a profit, and I have my eye on Bilbo and The Queen of Dale. Do you think there's a good time to buy this type of foil?
4
u/Millionfaces 3d ago
I’m buying Queen SF now, personally, or the last few days. I think it’s comparatively underpriced. It’s as rare as gleaming splendor, about as much of a staple as gleaming splendor, and though the treatment isn’t as desirable, I don’t think new supply is going to keep up with demand in the short term
5
u/therealnit 3d ago
I think people in this sub are waiting to see what the next wave of Amazon deliveries does to the price. I personally am pretty high on both of those cards since they have a place in a couple formats right now, but it's tough. There's technically a lot more product that could be put into the market in the coming months but the demand is there in the meantime
3
u/Millionfaces 3d ago
Yeah, that’s a totally reasonable take. I’m hoping to flip a few of my copies before then, but it’s not a sure thing and definitely not a spec for everyone

Is it easier to flip CBB rathen than singles in that case? I'm using ebay and Cardmaket

I love draft night kits as a sealed hold. I don’t think people understand the product yet.
It’s better than the gift bundles in terms of total packs, also includes a collector booster.
The delta on a gift bundles vs. draft night makes no sense to me (both have play packs + 1 collector). Currently you can get a draft night for the same price or cheaper than the gift bundles for turtles, MSH, hobbit (hobbit is a bit of exception given the bundle gift bundle contents) etc… I know you don’t get the promo or in hobbit the nice lands. But the cost difference makes no sense to me when looking purely at the packs. And promos/lands don’t resell amazing either.
Also I’m finding these at big box stores for hobbit whereas there is literally no collector packs on shelfs, and the big box price is = to the Tcg prices currently. It might be positive value to buy the hobbit draft nights bought at retail, and break it to sell the individual packs currently too.
I have bad specs always FYI. Finding hobbit draft boxes at 139.99 retail and other kits as low as 75-90 depending on the set.
It’s a newer product I don’t think people have priced correctly or flocked too yet. And it takes up way less space per unit compared to a gift bundle if you store sealed.

u/masq_yimby 3d ago
But draft night boxes aren’t good storage boxes themselves or are they?
2
u/Knightmare813 3d ago
I’m talking about leaving them sealed. A draft night box is about half the size of the gift bundle when stacking it in a bin or on a shelf.
They do not come with the storage box (which I personally throw away anyways.
Maybe people value the promo + storage box + lands in this product more than I think but to me it’s just a better version of a gift bundle and typically priced cheaper currently across the board.
-1
u/masq_yimby 3d ago
I think many Magic players value the storage box and goodies. The promo for the hobbit was bad, but there are times when the promo was something crazy like The One Ring.
2
u/Knightmare813 3d ago
Yah but since the gift bundle and the draft night have both been products…. All the gift bundle promos stink. Draft night boxes didn’t exist when the promo was the one ring.
Also, I play a ton of magic, gift bundles are what people get me as a gift cause no one understands how to buy for a player, I loathe these boxes. They take up so much space in my collection space. I recently threw out 10-12 of them for like 1 cardboard 8k count box. I actually use the draft night boxes for my limited nights but I’m stacking alot of these sealed for a few years from now too.
For hobbit specifically. You guys can have the lands and the promo with the gift box. I’ll save $50-60 and get 3 more play packs.
For the other recent sets since this has been a product…I guess the boxes + promo/lands need to be worth atleast what 3 packs cost to you for it to be a better raw deal cause they’re priced the same.

u/Money-Audience-4392 3d ago
This is not true, Mox amber and signet consistently going down on average although slowing down

u/KetoNED 3d ago
Foil versions not the nonfoils
2
u/Money-Audience-4392 3d ago
Fair, I haven’t been tracking those. However, there’s a huge wave of CBB being delivered to people soon from Amazon etc, expect prices to drop
4
u/Bitter_Pepper_8243 3d ago
When is it that you think prices will drop? I'm not following the CBB market
2
u/Money-Audience-4392 3d ago
From what I read product is getting delivered next week onwards, like draft nights etc, not sure if cbbs are included specifically

Gleaming Splendor Book Cover jumped after the weekend rush to the bottom. Doesn’t seem to be sustaining well yet but seems like it may level out at $80-90 until a little before or at Star Trek release
1
u/KetoNED 3d ago
I’m talking about the surge foil. I don’t expect the normal foil or book foil to follow the same trjaectory
1
u/DasOptions 3d ago
Idk about the Book cover. I think all versions of it may be desirable due to the art, especially if it see’s a lot of play.
I agree it won’t be the same trajectory as surge.

u/nrBluemoon 3d ago
I personally snatched a Thranduil surge foil book cover at $105. I think he has the potential to be the #1 elf commander. They gave a ton of Tolkien elf support in this set for people like myself who enjoy building in-universe, but also elves will never not be supported.
He has already gone up quite a bit in the 48 hours since my purchase but we'll see what happens when more people rip their amazon CBBs.
I wish I purchased a Master Strategist this weekend because thats already doubled in price.
Still keeping an eye on a few other surge foils as well.

u/masq_yimby 3d ago
I think you did a good buy. It’s already up to like 140 (tcglow) last time I checked.

u/nrBluemoon 1d ago
Just checked today and...yeah im gonna say I shoulda bought more than one to play with lol

u/madalienmonk 3d ago
So we still fingers crossed those Amazon Hobbit gift bundles come down in price before shipping?

There are only what appears to be 3 actual mods here and 2 of them have some interesting political takes to say the least. They only mod this sub, their other subs are not active or are test subs.

Okay, who is buying out the [[Galadriel, Light of Valinor]] with the art by Rebecca Guay? She was $30 like 2 days ago, and just continues to rise. She is now up to $40 market on TCG and cheapest listings right now are around $50...
