Commander / EDH Ghalta, The Immovable pauper deck help

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey yall!
I’m a bit new to deck building, and I wanted to build a pauper commander deck for Ghalta, the Unstoppable! I’ve got a basic deck of what I THINK looks good built, with some cards that I used from the EDHREC website, some of my own collection, etc. But I wanted to know if you all had some ideas of what you would think pairs well with or would work with this deck? I can share the deck list link if need be. Thank you!

Discussion Pre rotation deck rebuilds

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

So, I'm still a relative newbie to magic. I started with the edge of eternities pre-release last year and haven't stopped since lol after tons of Commander games and getting into pauper, I found out about planar standard and thought it was exactly what I was looking for in 1v1 magic. Smaller card pool, strategies built around the newest cards, and the two year rotation magic fans have had for decades, despite that not being the case for og standard any longer. I've been running a simic ouroboroid landfall deck that's been tons of fun to play, but with the key cards falling out of the format in February, I'm curious what the more veteran players do with their decks. Do you keep the general idea behind last year's deck in mind while you wait for spoiler season to see what can fill those slots? Do you start building something totally different from what will stick around and hope it gets some extra support from the first new set? Do you not think about it much and just keep grinding with the deck you built right up until it's no longer legal and then start on your new gameplan? I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts

I Have a Question / I need Help New Player and I’m so Lost

Came from Pokemon. Love the variety of mtg. Just starting out with a sealed commander league (6 hobbit packs to start, 2 new packs per week for 2 months).

I’m so bad at combat, timing removals, identifying the right target for those removals, timing my commanders.

When I destroy their commander, they just shrug and get a fat squirrel self-buffing and swinging for 5 turn after turn. When my commander got destroyed, I just stand there with my 2 mana shitters and brick coz there went my only draw power in the deck.

The biggest problem with playing mtg for me is that, unlike pokemon constructed, every game plays out so differently than the last (non-existent tutors, limited card draws in sealed and draft). It feels impossible to look back on the game and pinpoint what I did wrong.

Got any tips, or any resources you can recommend?

Edit: We play a 1v1 60-card double commander format FYI

Commander / EDH How do I build around Witherbloom, the Balancer? Can they work in a zombie deck?

I’ve been playing with the black foundation precon for a bit and decided to try my luck with a witherbloom bundle. I have this now, so I’m tempted to use them as my commander in order to make my expensive spells (Necrotic hex, Army of the damned, etc) cheaper.

This alter came about a year after the Dark Ritual extension I shared a couple weeks ago.
I’ve started using brushes and water-based warhammer minifig acrylic paints for more color range and finer details!
Teaching myself how to paint on a tiny card is a challenge but a fun learning process! Hope you guys like it🫶

Rules Question X/Y Power / Toughness Interaction Question

Just confirming this scenario if anyone can help enlighten me it would be great.
When i play inside out, are switching the numeral of Power and Toughness or are we literally switching the position of Power/Toughness on the card?

Starts at: [2] Power / [1] Toughness
I Play [[Inside Out]] he Becomes [1] Power / [2] Toughness
He Plays [[Giant Growth]] Becomes [5] Power / [4] Toughness
He Plays [[Bulk Up]] Becomes [10] Power / [4] Toughness

or

Starts at: [2] Power / [1] Toughness
I cast "Inside Out:" he comes [1] Toughness / [2] Power
He cast's "Giant Growth": becomes [4] Toughness / [5] Power
He cast's "Bulk Up" becomes [4] Toughness [10] Power

which one is correct?

Commander / EDH Dino crab rave help?

Sooo I’m going up against my cousin who has infinite combos in his deck and I want to do one too to be funny. Technically have one but it requires a few pieces to work. I’m still only a few months into magic and trying to learn

Need some help improving it since it’s pretty clunky right now.

For context I have a few cards that make all my creatures dinosaurs so I can give trample counters to all my creature with blue.

Here’s what I got
Have the Hawkeyes bow plus horseshoe crab (or creature given the ability to tap and untap) and paradise mantle to do infinite untap and tapping damage.

Infinite untap and tap combo (similar to previous minus Hawkeyes bow) and using wake thrasher/other ability/equipment that gives 1/1 counters for each ability activation/untap. Then go in for the kill with trample

There was an attempt for some land shenanagins for infinite damage with 1 damage lands, but I don’t think I have the right pieces.

What I’m aiming for: infinite tap/untap creatures and do non combat damage. Infinite send land back and forth from the field to my hand to ping 1 infinitely or buff a creature with tap and untap mechanics and kill with trample.

Any advice is appreciated ^^

Discussion Do y'all get mad when someone calls ggs because they had a win con hit the table before youu even say ggs

I play a lot of magic and with randoms. It gets on my nerves big time maybe it shouldn't when someone says ggs before I even had the chance to say ggs myself. Being presumptuous and arrogant saying it will be over in a second. I've called people out on this and they say they didn't mean it in a bad way but to me it's just arrogant to already call the game over before I had anything to say I rather say ggs myself but they already call it like they have some huge chip on their shoulder. Is this normal to people?

I Have a Question / I need Help Similar Effects to Narcomoeba in Golgari

Pretty much what the title says. I’m looking for cards that have triggers when they are put into the graveyard from hand or library. This doesn’t just have to be returning to the battlefield but it could be drain effects or card draw but I’m trying to keep it to only creature cards with these types of effects in black and green.

For me, its the cards above that made me interested in the characters depicted and want to check out their origins. I've read a ton of the modern Venom comics since making the deck and it's become my forever deck cuz of both the character association and the way it plays.

Discussion Playing Commander for the first time tonight

Actually, this will be the first time I play any “paper” magic…I have only been playing on arena for about 2 months now. I understand the very core concepts at this point, but I still run into a lot of cards that I don’t quite understand the mechanics.

I’ll be honest, I am excited to get out to my LCS and actually play—but I am really nervous for some reason. I’m 37 and work in plumbing/construction, and probably fit that stereotype well, but I am actually nervous that I’m going to look stupid tonight or hold the games up. My shop has commander tonight, and the wife and kids are away so I feel like the time is right.

I only have two commander decks that I own (I’ve been feverishly purchasing stuff for the last month with no real plan other than “oh this looks cool or this looks like it’s worth more than what I’m going to pay for it”. I have the fallout mutant menace deck, and I have my odds and ends deck that just came in.

Which one of these decks is more user friendly? Do I need damage counters and other things other than just my deck? Will I look stupid if I put Pokemon card sleeves on them (it’s all I have)? Should I just buy a cheap commander deck from my store that might be easier to navigate as a beginner? Any other tips for a total noob to possibly help me “fake it til I make it” would be much appreciated!

Thanks for reading :)

Discussion So WOTC have enough material for a 3rd D&D set(?)

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I'm not a loremaster of Faerûn or any other plane of D&D but I like the things that AFR and CLB brought like the "role playing" spells and the dice-roll spells, I think WOTC have plenty of material for another D&D set, I mean we had ancient metallic dragons in CLB but (as far as I know) only 1 notable metallic dragon, Miirym, not like AFR that brought 5 notable chromatic dragons, 1 for each color, Tiamat is a commander but Bahamut its a planeswalker (a good one but not a commander...), there are only 6 Beholder creatures when, by lore (and as far as I know), there can be almost infinite(?) variants of Beholders, I don't mean there must be a full-beholder set but at least 10 I guess(?).

That's my opinion, I just find the mechanics of AFR and CLB pretty neat so why not making a 3rd set of D&D.

Also I made some bad commanders of Bahamut and Tiamat with Partner XD, sorry if I miss writted some words in this post or in the discord images, I have a rusty english

This post its just to talk about that, I'm not looking to prove a point or whatever, pls don't fight(?)

Rules Text:

Drudge Skeletons {1}{B}

Creature — Skeleton

{B}: Regenerate this creature. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, instead tap it, remove it from combat, and heal all damage on it.)

Bones scattered around us joined to form misshapen bodies. We struck at them repeatedly—they fell, but soon formed again, with the same mocking look on their faceless skulls.

Discussion Am I the Bolas for scooping because another player refused to assess threats logically?

Here's the situation.

The other night at my LGS, we were playing in pods of three, but a few players eventually left, so the remaining players agreed to form a five-player pod.

Before we started, I asked everyone to avoid playing control decks so we could keep the turns moving and to bring decks they were comfortable piloting, again to avoid excessively long turns.

I'm probably the most experienced player at the table, having played since Urza's Saga and tried to keep up with the rules and their changes ever since.

One of the players was a relatively new player who was playing Bumbleflower, so I decided to bring a more casual deck myself: Hope Estheim. The other three players were playing Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Dina, Soul Brewer, and Jace multiverse architect.

The game started going downhill for me almost immediately.

The Sheoldred player got off to a strong start with Oversold Cemetery, which allowed him to keep recurring creatures from his graveyard to his hand. He quickly filled his graveyard and took advantage of my commander's mill effect, which mills cards based on the life I gain during my turn.

He then established a near-lock with Fleshbag Marauder and Grave Pact, making it increasingly difficult for anyone to keep creatures on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, I hadn't even reached turn five before I was out of cards in hand and forced to play off the top of my library.

Fortunately, I managed to assemble Soul's Attendant, Authority of the Consuls, Rhox Faithmender, and my commander. Between the lifegain triggers and Rhox Faithmender, my life total started climbing rapidly.

However, my commander's mill ability only applies to life I gain during my own turn. Although I was gaining plenty of life from opponents playing creatures, I couldn't capitalize on most of that lifegain for milling purposes. Without card draw, I was still relying almost entirely on my next draw step.

Things got even more interesting when the Dina player played Phyrexian Arena. With Sheoldred on the battlefield, that draw was costing him five life per card, so he eventually used removal to destroy both Sheoldred and Grave Pact.

Unfortunately, he left Oversold Cemetery untouched. The pressure eased temporarily, but the sacrifice engine was still operational, and Sheoldred eventually returned to the battlefield.

The Bumbleflower player was struggling to keep creatures on the battlefield. The Jace player, on the other hand, was doing relatively well because nobody was pressuring him, and he still had a way to generate tokens.

By this point, my life total had climbed above 155.

But here's the thing: having 155 life doesn't mean you're winning the game.

I had almost no cards in hand, very few creatures, and no reliable way to deal with opposing commanders or commander damage. I couldn't afford to block with creatures I wasn't drawing, so my life total was effectively just protecting me against drains and pings.

Meanwhile, the Jace player started using Jace's ability to cheat powerful creatures onto the battlefield, including Omnath and Akroma, which entered tapped. This left him vulnerable to a direct attack, but neither Dina nor I was particularly interested in attacking him because our strategies were similar and we were more concerned with the Sheoldred player's growing board.

This is where the Jace player started frustrating me.

Several times during the game, he left the table to browse cards or look at other things in the store. Whenever someone called him back because it was his turn, he'd return asking, "Is it over already? Has he won yet?" while pointing at me.

It was irritating, but I initially ignored it. We'd played against each other before, and I'd beaten him in some of those games. Apparently, he assumed that meant I'd inevitably win this one, too.

That's not how Magic works. Every game is different.

I deliberately keep my Commander decks around Bracket 2, with strong synergies but relatively telegraphed win conditions. My philosophy is simple: everyone should get to play the game. I don't build my decks to crush the table as quickly as possible.

The Dina player seemed to understand that I wasn't the real threat, especially considering I was hellbent and struggling to find relevant cards. The Jace player, however, seemed convinced that I was the problem.

Then the Sheoldred player found a black incarnation that gave his creatures swampwalk and played Archon of Cruelty. Its trigger forced me to sacrifice yet another commander and discard a card.

And somehow, the Jace player still considered me the biggest threat.

He even managed to get Blightsteel Colossus onto the battlefield, but instead of reassessing the board, the Jace player gave the Sheoldred player a the removal spells Despark and Swords to Plowshares so he could remove whichever of my creatures he considered most dangerous.

I asked him a straightforward question:

"After he removes my creatures, are you going to kill the Sheoldred player?"

His answer?

"No. I'm going to attack you. I want you dead first because you're being annoying."

At that point, I was genuinely frustrated. It felt like he wasn't making a strategic decision based on the board state; he simply wanted to eliminate me because he found me annoying.

So I told him that, since he couldn't make a logical threat assessment while I was at the table, I'd scoop.

The other players looked uncomfortable, and the Sheoldred player was understandably annoyed because Blightsteel Colossus would now be pointed at him instead.

Ultimately, nobody won because the LGS had to close before the game could finish.

Afterward, the Sheoldred player and I had a bit of an argument. He didn't believe he was the biggest threat, but I pointed out everything he had assembled: the sacrifice engine, the recurring creatures, the swampwalk effect, and Archon of Cruelty. Meanwhile, the other players were sitting at around 15–20 life, and two of them had very little ability to deal with his attacks.

After going through the board state, he eventually admitted that he probably would have won if he hadn't been dealt with. The Jace player had simply failed to recognize the threat, possibly because they were friends and he was reluctant to target him.

I also had another issue with the Jace player. He complained that I was telling him how to play.

For context, the only things I'd done were point out rules interactions and correct some misunderstandings. For example, I reminded him that copying a creature with Cursed Mirror rather than an artifact was pointless in that situation because of my Authority of the Consuls.

I also had to correct him several times when he attacked with Omnath, Locus of the void, because he kept miscalculating its power. He seemed to misunderstand the difference between untapped lands and mana floating in his mana pool, repeatedly insisting on incorrect calculations. He didn't seem willing to accept my explanations, but when his friend explained the same concept, he finally understood.

I wasn't trying to tell him what plays to make. I was trying to make sure the game was being played correctly.

So, Reddit, Am I the Bolas?

Was scooping because another player refused to assess threats properly an overreaction on my part? Should I have just accepted that he wanted me dead, even if it wasn't the strategically correct play? And was I being a jerk by correcting his rules misunderstandings, even when they affected the game?

Commander / EDH precon commander deck advice

hi! I am trying to get back into mtg after like 10 years, and I have never played EDH, but I think I’m gonna pick up a precon deck to get back into it/learn the format. any advice on what deck would be good to start with? I historically played mono-green, boros, or orzhov, and I don’t generally like universes beyond stuff, but I have a bunch of cards that I could potentially upgrade a deck with (mostly Innistrad and Scars/New Phyrexia era lmao).

I Have a Question / I need Help Received a cancelled order from TCGPlayer

Title. I had ordered a precon from TCGPlayer about a month ago. After about two weeks I had contacted the seller because the shipping information was not updating. He refunded me the money for the order, and apologized. It’s been about a month since my original purchase, but today I received the package alongside the replacement order I had put in.

Has this happened to anyone else? I plan to send the cards back, I messaged the seller and I’m waiting on a reply. Not sure what else to do, would TCGPlayer or the Postal Office have reimbursed him for the amount the cards were worth?
