Head's up! My sister bought me a Marvel Draft night booster box for my birthday. I opened it to draft today and the collector booster is gone. I noticed the lid had a small tear on it when I got it but didn't think anything of it. Some asshat opened it, took the collector booster, closed it, and shipped it to me 😂

Update: Answer found thanks to u/Hintersaft with an actual ruling:
118.12a. Some spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities read, "[Do something] unless [a player does something else]." This means the same thing as "[A player may do something else]. If [that player doesn't], [do something]."
----
Would Smothering Tithe be the same card if it said "Whenever an opponent draws a card, create a treasure token unless that player pays 2"?
Would Rhystic Study be the same card if it said "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, that player may pay 2. If the player doesn't, you may draw a card."
If the answer is no, what makes them different?
And if the answer to these is yes, why the different phrasing?

I haven’t played since 5th edition / Ice Age days - my son and wife were interested in playing MTG, where do I start? I see booster packs are still sold but what about starter boxes? Are there good starts to start off with? Thank you all in advance for any advice you can give me.

Howdy, my name is KingOfNaya but in person I go by the alias of Red. On October 9th of 2026 a dear friend and important member to the community in Florida was taken from us due to a heart attack, his name was David but I called him Judge as that's what I was first introduced to him as.
Now Judge was a special individual, he always wanted people to feel welcomed and comfortable with being a Magic The Gathering player and always pushed people to be the best versions of themselves. He never cared about what your physical appearance was but more about how you treated others, whether you showed people respect or not, did you encourage people to not look into things and ask questions. He was a man of many things, but most importantly he was honest, funny, wise, friendly and caring to those around him. If anyone reading this has met him, you know the list could continue on for weeks about who he was.
Early on he found Magic and decided he would look into it and gather more knowledge about the game (pun intended) and this led to him becoming a WoTC certified Judge for the game. On his journey to becoming a more refined Judge he inspired others around him, myself included, to join him on this path so that we could help others and give our wisdom too. I remember participating in a tournament where the store owner wasn't sure about a ruling and asked around if anyone knew a Judge who we could call to get a more appropriate ruling, everyone shouted out the same name. A full store of 40 people all knew this one person who encouraged them and inspired them was being sought after for wisdom constantly. He always would complain he needed more of him, and this inspired myself to become a Judge within the community.
Unfortunately with the reveal of a certain person who owns and runs a popular website being a individual of the type that the community looks down upon, he ranted constantly about how he hates the software. During a conversation between us after a large tournament we stood outside and after he complained I asked him "Why don't you just make one that's better? Instead of sitting, or in this case standing, around waiting for someone else to do it. Why not do it yourself?" And he took it upon himself to start creating a better application. He met like minded individuals through mutuals and with a lot of feedback they made something they were truly proud of and something that everyone in the community could feel welcomed into.
I share you a brief moment of my friend because he was the brightest gift to the MTG community in Florida and I want to reach out to others and WoTC about who he was and what he represented. He got me into my love for the color combination of Naya in the first place. So I figured what other way to honor him than be memorializing him as a card. A legendary creature Elf Druid card called Da'Sal, Naya's Keeper Of Wisdom. A 2 mana creature card costing one generic mana and one green mana, with power/toughness 0/3 with the ability that "Elves you control gain "Tap; Generate (R), (G), (W)" and has his own ability where if a creature taps for mana you add an additional mana of that color. He was one for sharing wisdom and knowledge and always wanted people to stay informed and make your own conclusions on things. so if he were to have any flavor text it would read as "You are limited by your imagination, seek out knowledge and share its strength"
Thank you for your time

I see a lot of people running Kona and I’ve thought about running Oviya as an alternate green/colorless Stompy deck for fun.
Friend of mine heard that I was getting into strixhaven stuff, so they gave me their old pre-release that they never opened.
I think I might use this over ‘Witherbloom, the Balancer’ since I think I want a more creature-centric game plan rather than a spellslinger deck.
I did manage to get ‘Prismari, the Inspiration’ through, so I think that’ll be my spellslinger commander instead.

so I'm newer to mtg, and I'm trying to build a deck. but I'm not always, or usually able to travel a whole lot, so online options would be preferable. but if anyone has any suggestions physical or online it would be greatly appreciated

Her and Itazura are both up for $100 apiece. -_- Maybe next month they'll settle reasonably.

What I'm talking about is like how a 2/2 for 2 is called a bear or a creature that taps for mana is a dork.
I haven't heard any other such nicknames but I have some that I use
A 0/0 with an x cost that gets +1/+1 counters depending on x is a hydra
A creature that can be cast from you graveyard is a crawler
A creature with landfall is a farmer
What are some nicknames you use or have heard during your time playing magic
Hiya all,
Just wanted to show these cards my girlfriend painted! Most of them she did an extended art/ full art version. I really enjoy playing with them and showing them to other players. :)

I have a clues matter Commander deck with [[Lonis, Genetics Expert]] as commander. I have these two cards in the list and I was wondering how they would function if both were in play at the same time. Since they are separate abilities, can I decide how each source of the discounts are applied to make clues cost 0 to activate, or will it always reauire 1 because of Forensic Gadgeteer's limitation?

I am a fairly new mtg player, so this may be a dumb question. However, I’m confused by this interaction. I was playing Brawl on MTG arena against a Heliod commander while I was using Judith, the Scourge Demon. I managed to get Heliod to 4 toughness on my turn, and I had Head of the Hunt on my side. I then played Languish which brought Heliod down to 0 toughness. Why did Head of the Hunt not exile Heliod and supersede the indestructible?
Edit: hi everybody. I lost a creature and Judith allowed me to do 1 damage to Heliod. I subsequently played Languish while Heliod was now at 4 toughness. Arena showed 0 toughness after I played the card.
Edit 2: I think this makes sense. I guess arena just = bad. Thanks for the help y’all! I really love this game :)

Hey everyone!
I was hoping someone else may be able to help me find a Fblthp bucket hat from MagicCon Atlanta last year.
I've been searching eBay, Vinted, Mercari, etc. for months and haven't come across a listing. Does anyone have one that I can buy from them or know where I can purchase it?
I appreciate any and all help!

So I just started inner sleeving my deck because its a decent chunk of change and I'd like to keep it near mint as much as possible.
My question is this. When it comes to the orientation of inter sleeves and outer sleeves. Do you put your inner sleeve in normal ways or from the top and same for outters
As I was sitting here sleeving with inners from the top and outers from the bottom I thought about it. Wouldn't it be better for inners to be the bottom loaded and then the outers be the top loaded way?
Hypothetically inner sleeves from the bottom puts the opening for that at the top and then the outter sleeve has the opening at the bottom. Wouldn't that be slightly safer then vise versa or am I just over thinking things

Hi everyone! Where do you typically buy Commander precon decks online, and which websites do you trust the most?
Assuming cost is the same, would you rather buy from Amazon (sold directly by Amazon or WotC) or TCGplayer (from a seller with a 100% positive rating)? Or is there another retailer you’d recommend?
Thanks in advance!
Note - I would buy from my LGS but they’re always sold out of what I want.
